Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and friends

I would like to commend our students for adhering to mask regulations over the past two weeks since their return to school. On public transport, to and from school and while here at school, our students have been exemplary. I do understand that at times students have had to find a space and get some fresh air as the masks have restricted air, caused headaches and fuzziness. Even this they have managed admirably. We feel enormously proud of the way our students have united in the best interest of one another and shown so much maturity.

As you are no doubt aware, yesterday the Premier announced that secondary school students will be required to wear masks in classrooms for another week. Let’s hope this is the final week and that we can enjoy further easing of restrictions after next week.

Some of our students have shared that they have already received their first vaccination. Students 16 year and over are now eligible to be vaccinated at various locations around Brisbane.

Our year 12 students have completed their final internal assessments last week and will now begin preparations for their external examinations. We have begun preparations for the provision of intensive workshops as well as online tutorials as the externals approach. The data we have to date from internal assessment indicates that our year 12 students are tracking well. It is pleasing to hear that they are taking up every opportunity to obtain thorough feedback in their classes in order to lift their performance. This is a priority area that our staff have been working on for the past 18 months and the students have really embraced this knowing that it impacts on their results.

Last Friday, our school café staff organised our COVEKKA treat with the iconic Strawberry Sundaes, a lovely little nod to our poor cancelled EKKA and support for the Prince Charles Hospital. It certainly lifted the spirits of our staff and students, after what was a very challenging week of mask wearing. This week the Queensland Government announced the new date for the Ekka public holiday. Unfortunately for our year 12s this occurs during their block exams on Friday October 29. Some students may find this beneficial, but it may also impact on families who wanted to take the opportunity to have a long weekend away.

We continue to navigate uncertain times, and we have become very flexible in adapting to change as things pivot in response to the global pandemic.

Stay safe and well.

Taking Football Excellence around the world!

Congratulations to one of our very own year 11 Football Excellence students Layla Proctor on acquiring a contract to Bundesliga club SV Elversberg. Layla joined the Corinda FEX program a couple of years ago and has absolutely thrived.

Last week Layla left Corinda to head off to Germany to finish the remainder of her schooling. We wish Layla all the very best as she continues her Football journey overseas in Germany.

Amazing effort.

Mt Gravatt Show

Recently, a keen group of students represented the school at the Mount Gravatt show. They did an excellent job of caring for the animals as well as leading and presenting Suffolk sheep and cattle in the show ring.

All students also took part in the junior judging competition with Molly Lyons making the finals for her age group and Maya Dohuu winning her category. This was a fantastic achievement as there were 60 competitors from a range of state and private schools. A special thanks to Jess Murphy and Charlotte Beswick for their senior leadership roles on the day.

Festival of Fruit

Recently, the year 7 and year 9 Agricultural Technology class undertook taste tests of ‘mystery fruits.’ They then scored these for taste and texture as well as trying to name the sample. They were surprised by a number of fruits they had never tried before, some of which came from the school Agricultural section orchard.

Mystery fruits included mandarins, kaffir limes, persimmons, kumquats, pomelos as well as others. Thanks to Montagues who donated three boxes of apples so students could take home free samples!

Help us help the environment!

Corinda State High School is thrilled to offer our students an innovative recycling solution for our protective masks. Simply return your used masks to us and it will be packed in our Zero Waste Box™ and sent for recycling. The Zero Waste Box system is an all-in-one recycling solution from TerraCycle®. Everything collected through the box is sorted and processed into raw materials that can be reused instead of being sent to landfill.

Students are able to bring in their masks to the RIC Foyer area to be placed in our Zero Waste Box™

Reminder About School Processes

A reminder to parents that the following processes are in place at school and we ask our parents and carers to adhere to these processes wherever possible:

  • If your students has to leave early, they must have a signed note from you and must bring that note to their Dean of Students to get it signed before school
  • If there is an emergency during the day and we have to fetch your student from school please be patient with office staff – they have protocols and processes they are asked to follow in order to provide the least amount of disruption to staff and students (remember – this can occur several times per day so we must adhere to process)
  • 3379 0290 is the student absence line; you can also email student.absence@corindashs.eq.edu.au

2021 Early School Leavers survey

The Queensland Government is seeking the support of the school community for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2020, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.

Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.

Thank you for your support of Next Step post-school destination surveys in 2021.

New Life on the Ag Farm!

This week we were lucky enough to have 15 pure-bred Barnevelder chickens hatch at the farm! Our year 7 and year 8 Agriculture students have been involved in bringing these chicks to life and were excited to meet them this week.

We are moving all our Corinda chickens over to this breed as they are very placid and are known for their strong egg production.
