Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Carers,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone back to a new and exciting school year. I am always energised by the enthusiasm our students show when they are reunited with their friends and teachers. There were lots of smiles and warm greetings throughout our school as students returned last week. It has certainly been a very smooth start this year and what a welcome change compared to previous years!
I would like to take this opportunity to extend a very warm welcome to our new students and families. Our Year 7 students have settled in to high school routine and have managed to adapt to their new environment very smoothly. Our staff had a very well-planned transition program supporting them over the past week as they settle into the Corinda way.

Our Year 11 students started the year with a Leadership Retreat and this has really set the scene for their senior years and their leadership in the school. They are more than ready to take on the challenges of their studies.

Passing of past School Captain…
This week we were informed of the sad passing of past school captain Matthew Schneider from the Class of 2000. Matthew passed away last week from a months-long battle with bowel cancer while serving as the president of Gold Coast-based VFL team Southport Sharks. Described as one of Queensland’s most respected Aussie rules football identities, Matthew leaves behind his wife and three children and an incredible legacy.
Our thoughts are with Matthew’s family as they go through this very difficult time.
On a final note, we are very much looking forward to our Academic Awards of Excellence Evening next week and do hope you can join us to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students from their 2022 studies. We also look forward to reconnecting with past Year 12s as we formally announce Dux of the School 2022.
Hope to see you there.
Helen Jamieson
Executive Principal

Heron Island expedition fuels budding scientists
In early December, senior students and staff made the annual trek to The University of Queensland Heron Island Research Station for a week-long expedition. For the past 56 years, our students have worked with researchers to collect data for long-term research into coral health and engage in studies relating to the natural habitat. This real-world experience gives them an understanding and appreciation of the sensitive nature of our coral reef and the need to protect it from the threat of climate change. The excursion also gives students an opportunity to view different marine science avenues that which they may wish to pursue as a career in the future. The consistent feedback from students is always that this is one of the most amazing and unique experiences in their life – and the teachers also agree with them.
Thank you to both Dunlop Park Pool and Shelly’s Swim School for kindly supplying our sun-safe rashies. In the lead up to the trip, students mastered swim and snorkel competencies across three sessions at local pool, Dunlop Park.

Corinda graduate dazzles with creative talent
Congratulations to Class of 2018 graduate Chantel Bates for receiving high praise at the QUT Graduate Design Awards showcase at the end of last year. Chantel, who has just completed her Bachelor of Design in Visual Communications, was awarded the People’s Choice Award for her capstone project ‘Echoes’.
“It is such an honour to be named [for this award] as it highlights my impact on community and the goal of my projects which has always been highlighting Indigenous stories and successes,” Chantel said.
“I am proud of my achievements and look forward to what the future holds for myself in the industry!”
Well done to Chantel, and we look forward to watching on as you continue to create and share your powerful messages through visual mediums.

Grand final place for futsal superstar
Year 9 Football Excellence student Rani represented Queensland at the National Futsal Championships over the Summer holidays, with the team finishing in second place. The event was held in Melbourne, where they faced the Victorian team in the grand final, with the score tied at 3-3 by the end of extra time. Unfortunately, Queensland lost in penalties, but Rani and her teammates should be very proud of their efforts and hard-fought victories throughout the competition. Well done Rani!
Congratulations to Year 10 FEX student Phoenix for being selected to represent Australia in the U15s Futsal Team that will compete in Brazil later this year. Phoenix received the news over the school holidays which were predominantly spent in Sydney where he competed at the National Club Futsal Championship. Phoenix and his team were crowned Champions for the U14s age group after winning six games and netting 57 goals! We wish Phoenix all the best for the year ahead!

- Our new high-performance tennis courts have been completed and are now open to students and public bookings
- The new B Block amenities are operational
- There’s been classroom refurbishments across a number of blocks
- Work is in progress for our ground floor Admin Block
- Student artworks have featured on our new water bubblers
