Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends,
Another busy week for Corinda students. This week, a group of students participated in a junior leadership program with Character Builders. The purpose of this was to build the capacity of our students to enact change, and build positive school culture. I was most impressed by the engagement of our students and the way in which they interacted with each other. There were approximately 40 students from Years 7 – 9 who formed a strong bond, explored leadership qualities and worked together as a team, to further develop their understanding of what it means to be a leader. Character Builders commented to me, that this was the most impressive group they had worked with all year, and they thoroughly enjoyed the interactions with our students.
Character Builders works with a wide range of schools, so it really meant a lot to me to hear their feedback – not that I was surprised as I genuinely do believe Corinda students have enormous potential, and are incredibly genuine human beings. The work does not stop with the two-day workshop, and the students will now have the opportunity to work with our feeder primary schools as they undertake their leadership programs, and continue to work on projects within the school. It was such a pleasure to observe these amazing young people this week.
Our Year 11 leadership aspirants also took part in a leadership workshop as part of their selection process for Senior leadership positions next year. We also opened this workshop to aspirational Junior students considering leadership positions in Junior Secondary. Peer Power delivered ‘Leading a Legacy’. Students attended in their own time during last week’s Student Free Day and once again, they were fully engaged and very impressive. The quality of leadership was noted and I know it is going to be very difficult selecting leaders from this group of very talented, enthusiastic and capable young adults. Peer Power commented on how much they enjoyed working with our students. The feedback from the students was very positive and they left at the end of the day with a real spring in their step; energetic and enthusiastic about the opportunities 2023 presents.
I felt so proud of all these students and it was very inspiring for me to see such positivity amongst our future leaders. Congratulations to all students who took up this opportunity. Without a doubt, this has been one of the best parts of my job this term.

AFL premiership glory for Year 7 student
Congratulations to Year 7 student and U13 Girls AFL player Ava Toohey who helped secure the first Premiership Cup for local club Sherwood AFC for 2022. Ava and her U13 team defeated Victoria Point last weekend in a thumping 39-4 victory. Along with Ava, a number of Year 7 Corinda State High School students including Jack, Cooper, Octavian, Dan and Travis represented the mighty Magpies in their own Premiership stoush last weekend but lost to a dominant U12’s Morningside. The future looks bright for these young guns – well done!

Students and staff took a trip around the world, celebrating our school’s amazing cultural diversity at the recent Multicultural Afternoon. It was a memorable event full of fun, food and cultural dance performances. Following the event, the cultural flavours continued to flow with a thank you sausage sizzle for performers, who were treated to okonomiyaki, care of Ms Thederan.

Amateur photographers shine bright
Our Research and Innovation Centre (RIC) was transformed into a specialised photography studio for a recent Year 12 Media workshop. Utilising the state-of-art facilities including the green screen room, Jason from Buckshot Photography set up multiple studios in the RIC for students to hone their skills in different lighting settings for portraits and still life.
The students had a fabulous day experimenting in costume with different effects and learning new techniques while the RIC created the perfect foundation for their images to shine.

Praise for HPV team after strong showing in Toowoomba
The Corinda Racing Team are back from Toowoomba… a little tired but all in one piece. Our bikes and riders did extremely well over the 16 hour event last weekend which started at 4:00 pm on Saturday afternoon and finished at 8:00 am Sunday. Our Senior Boys placed 7th in their category (17th overall), Senior Mixed placed 8th in category while our Junior Mixed 5/8 riders came 5th in category. The team’s combined totals saw the students ride the equivalent distance from Brisbane to Newcastle in 16 hours.
Prior to the race, Paul van Druten from HPV apparel sponsor Bailey Print Group visited students to hand out new team shirts. While handing out the prized shirts, Paul explained his team’s process behind the expert wrap of the new Motorama Mitsubishi Moorooka-sponsored Peregrine Falcon bike. In return, students treated Paul to an impromptu demo; setting a lightning pace around the Quadrangle.

Rise and shine Corinda!
Year 9 Culinary Excellence treated staff to a delicious Paddock to Plate breakfast buffet. With an indigenous ingredient focus, students fused native edible plants with traditional breakfast items; serving flavourful items including bacon and egg wraps topped with wild thyme tomato relish, scones with mulberry and desert lime jam, and wattle-seed chia puddings. All funds raised will be invested into Corinda’s beautiful kitchen garden. A big thanks to our SIFT faculty especially Miss Rowe for helping students deliver a memorable event.

Keeping your children safe when dropping off and picking up at school
The beginning and end of the school day are busy times for pedestrians and vehicles outside the school. Parent and carers, please be reminded that driving onto school grounds (through any gate) to drop off or pick up is prohibited. Students should walk through the gates. If they have an injury or reason they must be dropped on-site, this must be approved through Administration.

Through the looking glass at Science Week
For National Science Week this year, the theme was GLASS! Our UQ Science Ambassadors and Lab hard to run activities including building mini kaleidoscopes, running an open lab and making edible sugar glass. There was also plenty of interactive activities including setting Science teacher, Mr Pilkington on fire and running a Kahoot at break time to quiz students on their science knowledge. Congrats to Kabul’s Thomas Ngo (pictured) who won the Biology Kahoot.
The week was a huge success, and it was fantastic to see so many students engaging in these student-run, STEM-based activities!
