Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Friends,

Our students certainly enjoyed returning to the Brisbane Exhibition last week, and in true form made us all very proud. The presentation of the Corinda stalls, displays and interactions with the judges and members of the public were duly noted and subsequently were awarded first place for their overall presentation and conduct over the week. This was a big commitment for our students, who braved the cold weather, leaving the comforts of their home and staying with the animals for the duration of the program. Congratulations to our staff and students on a very successful return to the Ekka!

It was great to see so many students enjoying themselves at the school disco last Tuesday evening. It has been such a long time since our student leaders hosted a school disco and it was very well supported by staff and students. I am sure they enjoyed a sleep in the next day on the public holiday. Congratulations to our student leaders for their organisation of a very successful event.

Spring is just around the corner and it is a timely reminder to parents and carers that students must ensure they have a school hat. School Locker has ample stock of the bucket hats and caps as well as the formal hats available for purchase. Students will not be permitted to play sports on the ovals at break time if they are not wearing their school hat.

Our Year 12 students are now in the process of preparing for the completion of unit 4, and in preparation mode for their external exams which commence in week 4, term 4. We have just recently reviewed our Year 12 results and it was pleasing to see how much the students have improved on their Year 11 results from last year. They have really embraced their feedback along the way and put in every effort to maximise their marks from their internal assessments. Not long to go now and I am sure they are trying to remain focussed over the coming weeks.

Helen Jamieson
Executive Principal

Corinda dancer wins big at national dance competition

Year 10 student Tahnaya Noonan scooped several awards at the Jump Dance Challenge last weekend. Demonstrating exceptional classical technique across Classical, Lyrical and Contemporary, Tahnaya won gold in Lyrical Champ (Open), Hip Hop, and Jazz. She took home silver in Lyrical, Jazz Champ (in normal Jazz section) and Improve and was awarded bronze in Contemporary.

To top off her medal haul, Tahnaya won the Judges Award which qualifies her for an elite Judges championship section at Nationals and also the Scimm Dance Company Award which will see her participate in an exclusive workshop at National Finals in Melbourne in July 2023. As part of this award, Tahnaya will perform a piece specially choreographed by the Scimm Dance Company to perform at the Nationals Gala. What an incredible effort!

Tahnaya will be performing at Dance Night - a vibrant showcase of Corinda's Dance and Dance Excellence programs on Friday 14 October. See flyer below for more details.

Rosies' gives students and staff opportunity to give back to the community

Senior students and staff representing Corinda Cares recently joined their local Rosies - Friends On The Street van to volunteer on street outreach. For three hours, the team served hot drinks and food, handed out sleeping bags and conversed to those living rough on the streets of Brisbane. Thank you to all who participated. Rosies’ important service to the homeless is only made possible through the generous time given by volunteers.

Triumphant return to the Ekka

The triumphant return of the Ekka was the perfect platform to showcase our Arts and Agricultural Technology offerings. Our Dance Troupe and roving Drumline musicians entertained the crowds while our sheep, alpacas and chickens won young hearts in the animal display areas.

Our animals were lovingly cared for by 17 enthusiastic students who braved the cold conditions, camping on-site for five nights! These students were involved in daily judging, parading and maintaining the animal display area and their hard work was rewarded with a first place Tidy Pens Competition ribbon – a first for Corinda State High School!

Don’t forget our Sustainable Futures Farm Day is taking place on Saturday 10 September from 10.00 am – 3:00 pm. There will be an animal petting zoo, food and drinks, face-painting, plant sale and a Smart Farm showcase plus much more!

We are also excited to announce that we will host a Spring Clean Garage Sale on Farm Day. Our storage rooms are full of pre-loved school furniture (e.g. chairs, tables, and bookshelves) that still have plenty of life left in them. Grab a bargain at Farm Day! Further details about the sale will be released over the coming weeks. Watch this space!

School News

School Network Outage on Monday 22 August

Telephone communications at Corinda State High School will be temporarily shut down next Monday 22 August from 8:00 am – 8:40 am due to a network system upgrade. If Parents and Carers need to contact the school due to an emergency situation, please call 0436 819 724 or alternatively email info@corindashs.eq.edu.au.

Phone ban creates positive school culture

Corinda State High School’s mobile phone policy received positive media coverage last week when Executive Principal Helen Jamieson was interviewed by ABC Radio Brisbane. She told 612ABC morning presenters Craig Zonca and Loretta Ryan, that the school introduced the initiative in 2019 with almost unanimous support from parents, many "at their wit's end" dealing with teenage phone addiction. For three years, students have been prevented from accessing their phones and now students are observed playing games and chatting during breaks, ending an epidemic of "heads down, thumbs going".

Wear it Purple Day

Students are encouraged to wear purple accessories and attire next Friday 26 August for Wear It Purple Day. A Student Council-led initiative, the event strives to foster supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for young gender diverse or LGBTQ+ people. Sausage Sizzle, drinks, purple cupcakes, and wristbands are all available for purchase during Junior Break 1 and Senior Break 2. See flyer for more details.

Reminder About School Processes

A reminder to parents that the following processes are in place at school and we ask our parents and carers to adhere to these processes wherever possible:

  • If your student has to leave early, they must have a signed note from you and must bring that note to their Dean of Students to get it signed before school.
  • If there is an emergency during the day and we have to locate your student at school please be patient with office staff – they have protocols and processes they are asked to follow in order to prevent disruption to staff and students (remember – this can occur several times per day so we must adhere to process).
  • 3379 0290 is the student absence line; you can also email student.absence@corindashs.eq.edu.au.

Yearbook Design Competition

The 2022 Yearbook promises to be bigger and better this year thanks to a student-led Committee overseeing the publication. One of the many new additions this year will be a special student artwork gracing the inside back cover. Open to all students, the Yearbook Design Competition involves creating any form of artwork that represents WELLBEING. Artworks can be a photograph, a sculpture, a mix media print… Students must submit artwork by Monday 5 September either in person at the Library or via email library@corindashs.eq.edu.au.

Book Week Scavenger Hunt!

Book Week will be celebrated this year with a Book Character Scavenger Hunt on Wednesday 24 August. Throughout the day, students will search for teachers dressed as book characters. Students can pick up the scavenger list detailing participating staff from the Library in the morning. Each character found will earn a House point. Students can work alone or in teams and must hand their list to the Library when complete. Happy hunting!

2022 Early School Leavers survey

The Queensland Government is seeking the support of the school community for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2021, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.

Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.

Thank you for your support of Next Step post-school destination surveys in 2022.

Adapting to a Changing Market

What can you expect in a normalising housing market? The local 4075 catchment area has been incredibly fortunate to see an average of a 20.5% price increase in the last 12 months, 7.7% since January alone - this is not normal! Despite the media fuelled negativity what we are now seeing, it’s not doom and gloom, it is the market readjusting to a more stable growth pattern. The increase in interest rates is designed to suppress such rapid growth. For those selling, it may mean we see slightly extended days on market to find not the first buyer but ultimately the best buyer to achieve your goal. Strategy becomes far more important in a more balanced market.
