Executive Principal’s Report

After a false start, we finally managed to progress with Parent Teacher Conferences via Microsoft Teams. I do hope that you all managed to navigate this change without too much difficulty. Changing the date caused a lot of complications in relation to transferring the appointments. What one would assume to be a simple process proved to be quite complex. Thank you for your patience and understanding with this.

We are hoping that this third wave of COVID is almost at its peak and that we can look forward to reduced cases in our school community in the coming weeks however the Ekka may present some new spikes. We continue to “proceed with caution”!

Last week we hosted a small group of educators from South Australia, who toured our school and learnt about our strategic agenda with global mindfulness. I always feel very proud of our school and the work that is taking place in our classrooms. They were most impressed with our school climate and noted how active our students are in the playground and the absence of mobile phones.

Growing global competence – Corinda hosts South Australian school leaders and educators

Our students have been busy preparing for the return of the Ekka and presenting our animals. They are very excited to be once again competing and learning from the judges and other schools. What a unique experience for our students. We wish them well in the competitions and congratulate them for putting their hand up to stay with the animals and take care of them along with our staff. This is commitment!

Last week we were treated to ‘Christmas Night in July’ by our Senior Hospitality students. The standard of food, presentation and service was outstanding and our students exceeded all expectations. A great night had by all. Congratulations to our staff and students for all your hard work and effort.

Our Year 12 students are in the middle of their final internal assessments before heading into preparation for external exams in term 4. Another significant milestone for our Year 12 students. We wish them well for their final internal pieces. Not long to go now, but every mark counts towards that ATAR.

Congratulations to our Dance students who really scooped the prizes at the recent Beenleigh Eisteddfod. I know they were very excited to be back on the stage performing and they exceeded all expectations. Our students certainly raised the profile of Corinda at this competition and proved they were a force to be reckoned with. Well done staff and students – you should all feel extremely proud.

National titles everywhere! Our students are certainly on fire at the moment. We have just learnt that our Tennis and Football team have made it to National titles, along with Dance Troupe making it to National titles. What amazing achievements and obviously a lot of hard work to get to this point. Go team Corinda!

Some of our best

Student portraits headed for Brisbane Portrait Prize

A stunning selection of portraits by our Year 10 Visual Art students will be shortlisted to enter the upcoming Brisbane Portrait Prize: Next Gen at the Brisbane Powerhouse.

Students stretched the boundaries of portraiture, creating modern self-portraits and portraits of someone special to them. Each student encoded their canvases with visual metaphors in order communicate information relating to the identity of the subject to the audience. The results, six of which were created by students who participated in our Visual Art Excellence program during Years 7-9, speak for themselves.

INTAD pampers pets

Our Year 12 Building & Construction Skills classes have created the pawfect house for pampered pooches. Just look at Mini (pictured below) swaddled in luxury!

Over 10 weeks, students put their skills to the test and excelled themselves in creating these luxury dog houses which provide a sense of security for pups and some shelter from the elements. Well done to all involved! The dog houses will be on display at our Sustainable Futures Farm Day on Saturday 10 September.

Ekka dress rehearsal at the Mt Gravatt Show

Late last month, a group of students herded Corinda's cattle and headed south to the Mt Gravatt 106th Annual Show 2022. Our cattle won a number of ribbons, a trophy and the admiration of the crowds as our wonderful students proudly represented the school during opening proceedings and the Grand Parade.

Offering a glimpse into days gone by with livestock competitions, the Show is a prelude to the Ekka where 17 students will be taking part in showing, parading and judging of chickens, alpacas and sheep.

Mt Gravatt Show Results:

Class 1 (Lightweight Led Steer)

  • 1st place Freddy shown by Daniel won first place also taking out Champion Let Steer overall!
  • 2nd place Luna shown by Layla
  • 3rd place for Pixie shown by Charlie

Class 4 (Open Junior Female any breed)

  • 2nd place for Hazel shown by Travis

Class 6 (Open Senior Female any breed)

  • 2nd place for Quartz shown by Holly

Class 14 (pair of females)

  • 3rd place for Quartz and Hazel shown by Molly and Alexis

During judging, event organisers combined the Senior and Junior categories making it even more impressive that Alexis, in her first cattle judging made it into the top seven, and was one of only two people on the day that correctly identified the judging order of animals. What an incredible achievement!

**EKKA NEWS** Our beautiful alpacas, sheep and chickens will be on show in the Animal Pavilion from Wednesday 10 August. Our Dance Troupe will also be representing Corinda State High School on the Main Stage on Monday 8 August at 10:00 am.

Christmas in July

Festive fun was everywhere last week with students celebrating Christmas in July! Everyone came together with friends to enjoy giant games of pass the parcel, Christmas carols, and photos with Santa.

The event’s festive spirit flowed through from our Christmas Night in July event held earlier in the week. The Corinda community gathered to enjoy a delicious 3-course Christmas-themed meal prepared by graduating Hospitality students along with music, dancing, mocktails and more. Thanks for the memories Corinda.

Thank you to our incredible SIFT department – Amber, Lorraine, Lisa-Maree, Michelle and Lee for helping students deliver an unforgettable Christmas in July

Queensland’s future superstars on show at CGEN

The Arts at Corinda were celebrated last week when student performers participated at the 2022 Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage showcase. Held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, 17 of our drummers and dancers were chosen to perform with the best of the best Arts students across Queensland.

The four sell-out shows were a huge success and for those who could not attend, the whole arena spectacular will be broadcast nationally on Channel 10 later this year.

A big shout out to all performers and staff for the huge commitment and sacrifice every Saturday for the past three months; rehearsing at home and at school. Congratulations to Amy, Alexander, Tahlia, Jacqueline, Tahu, Vini, Sinead, Shannon, Holly, Jas, Myles, Helayna, Jessica, Ameya, Madelyn, Belle, and Chanel.
