Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends,
As we celebrate the end of semester 1, along with assessment and reporting for students, we are still very mindful of the continued challenges of COVID and the growing impact of the flu season. While we have all looked forward to moving out of COVID restrictions, we are still experiencing challenges that have impacted on our school community. Add a devastating flood, and we have been through the spin cycle once again. Amidst this, our staff, students and families have demonstrated their true resilience and we have navigated this together.
It has been a really challenging start to the year with many unexpected surprises. I would like to conclude this term by thanking all members of our school community for their support and assistance over the Semester. We are so fortunate to have so much support from community groups, our local members, P&C, School Council, and families. This school is always ‘a buzz’ with activities and we have so many reasons to celebrate these successes for which we continually strive.
We received some positive news from our local MP Jess Pugh today, informing us that funding has been approved for the construction of new Science facilities. This is wonderful news and thanks to the efforts of our P&C Association, School Council and Student Leaders for their advocacy on this. We look forward to developing our plans in the coming months to ensure we deliver state-of-the-art learning environments for our students. I am very excited to be able to plan for this and continue to value add for our students.
Our School Annual Report is now available on the school website - www.corindashs.eq.edu.au. A copy of the report will also be available at the school from next term. Please contact Administration if you wish to obtain a printed copy.
Best wishes for a safe holiday.

Some of our best
Corinda student competes at Netball State Championships
Year 7 student Emma Hollis recently competed in the State Championships for 10-12 Years Netball. Held in Townsville earlier this month, the competition saw Emma’s Met West team win seven games and lose four (two were very close losses) which resulted in a 5th place overall. Great effort Emma!
Also, a big thanks to Mr Bateson and the HPE department for co-ordinating these sporting trials, which provide amazing experiences for our students.
New HPV takes flight
16 Corinda Racing Team students braved a freezing start when they swooped into Ipswich to compete in the 8-hour Queensland Pedal Prix. The team, consisting of Junior and Senior students racked up outstanding results on three recumbent 3-wheeler bikes including the brand-new Peregrine Falcon, backed by the fire power of new HPV sponsor, Motorama Mitsubishi Moorooka.
All the weekends spent working on fitness, bike maintenance and teamwork paid off with Junior Mixed and Senior Mixed each placing 3rd and Senior Boys placing 4th in their respective categories.
Many thanks to our dedicated staff - Mr Jack, Mr Newberry and Ms Rowe for going above and beyond in prep for the race and a big shout out to new HPV apparel sponsor, Bailey Print Group who quickly and expertly wrapped the new bike.

Bill Turner Trophy Girls team hail best ever result
Congratulations to our victorious Bill Turner Trophy Girls team who progressed to the competition's area semi-final round after defeating Stretton State College.
This result sees our girls achieve their best ever result in this competition. The girls will play the winner of Kelvin Grove vs Brisbane SHS at the start of term 3. Our Boys who also competed on the day, came very close to securing a semi-final slot, but were overpowered by a strong Marsden SHS team in their final game 1-0.

Bookworms flock to library for WABIAD
Over 150 students participated in the recent Write a Book in a Day (WABIAD) competition. Teams of up to ten students bunkered down in the Library to write and illustrate a book from start to finish in just twelve hours.
WABIAD is a fun, creative and collaborative competition which raises funds for The Kids’ Cancer Project. Here, Year 8 student, Parishi and Year 7 student, Holly share their experiences:
Write a Book in a Day 2022 was a wonderful day full of enlightening experiences. From writing a book collaboratively to having fun with friends, there isn’t a single bit of the day that I would change. WABIAD not only tests our imaginative skills and how well we work with a group but also extends our thinking in new directions. However, WABIAD is not only about working, it also gives every student and teacher an opportunity to bond with each other and build a strong relationship. The teachers are also very supportive and give up their whole day and evening just so every single student who participates is allowed to be creative to the best of their ability. So, a big thank you to all the teachers!
- Parishi (Year 8P)
As we walked through the doors I thought, this is going to be a long twelve hours, but as the minutes flew by I enjoyed each second. Students from every grade were laughing and making memories for years to come. As the day continued, our stories grew and our ideas flourished. We wrote and wrote. Then edited, then wrote some more, stopping for snacks every now and then. As we finally heard the call for dinner, kids busted out the doors, trying to sneak in line for seconds and doing laps of the oval to help balance out the energy. As the final hours came, the pressure was through the roof, but we all managed to complete something we were proud of. As we all handed in our final stories and cleaned up, I knew it was worth it.
- Holly (Year 8Y)

Elite footballers host Year 7 AFL rising stars
Year 7 students and Sherwood Magpies AFC rising stars, Jack and Ava enjoyed a positive learning experience when Brisbane Lions’ Lachie Neale and Nakia Cockatoo hosted an AFL clinic in the Corinda community.
After a round of kick-to-kick, the Lions superstars shared their learnings of being an elite athlete - diet, discipline, determination and the importance of having a Plan B. “Footballers average four years at elite level,” 2020 Brownlow medallist Neale told the students. “Our coach is a father figure and encourages all of us to study or do work experience to prepare for life after football.”
Thanks Brisbane Lions. Education is not limited to just knowledge from books, but can also be obtained through practical experiences outside of the classroom.

Minerals, crystals and more in Year 10 Science
Year 10 Science students were lucky to have a visit from GeoChemistry expert and University of Queensland Associate Professor, Mark Kendrick. Students were given a variety of minerals and crystals to examine and students were told how chemical bonding and structure of these materials gave rise to their unique appearance. Dr Kendrick also emphasised the importance of earth science and the critical role of rare earth metals in mobile phones and computers.
Students carried out hardness testing on rocks samples. Competition was fierce for the prize of a box of Tim Tams.

Strings students impress at State Honours Ensemble Program
Congratulations to Strings students, Sarah Wilson and Lara Jessen for their recent participation in the State Honours Ensemble Program with the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (The Con).
The students represented Corinda admirably with the Con commenting “…you should be very proud of their commitment, achievements, and attitude. We were pleased to see how much they accomplished in such a short time frame and look forward to seeing their growth in the coming years."
Year 7 travels to Egypt in virtual reality
Mr Payne’s Year 7 History class consolidated their knowledge of Ancient Egypt from Semester 1 by taking a virtual tour of the land of the Pharaohs. Exploring pyramids and tombs of pharaohs, students were able to recall their knowledge from class through the 360° immersive experience.
Unsung heroes honoured
Earlier this month, we celebrated the unsung heroes of our school – our cleaning and facilities staff. Our facilities team consisting of Mo, Jo, Brian and Lucas, work tirelessly across our vast 43-acre site. Each day, they keep 84 facilities operating, and maintain the appearance of our beautiful grounds and Farm. Our 17-strong team of cleaners ensure the school is clean and safe for staff and students to work and learn each day. On behalf of the Corinda community, we thank you for all your effort and your vital contribution to our school.

Cultural immersion in Year 10 Chinese
Year 10 Chinese swapped textbooks for paint brushes when they tried their hand at painting Chinese gourds. Commonly used as lucky charms in Chinese culture, gourds are called hú lú, which is a homophone for words such as “happiness and good fortune”. Students continued their cultural deep dive with a session of Tai Chi care of the Confucius Institute.
