Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and friends,

As we approach the end of semester one, we are amidst the completion of assessment, whether it be assignments or exams. I am confident that our students are well prepared, thanks to the support and ongoing feedback of our dedicated teaching and non teaching staff.

One of our main improvement priorities this year is Feedback for Stretch. Both our staff and students value feedback as a significant tool to help students lift and stretch their academic performance.

The support of our after school tutors is also a key strategy in assisting students in embracing their feedback and responding to this. Our Research and Innovation Centre comes to life after school with free tutors. It is great to see a large number of students taking up this opportunity – whether it be to engage with the support on offer or to embrace the learning environment available to focus on their studies.

It was wonderful to spend time with our Year 12 students last week as they came together to celebrate their 100 days left in their secondary schooling. There was certainly an air of excitement with the thought that they are on the home stretch. The countdown has begun… but there is still a little bit of work to be done. I am sure our Year 12 Parents are thinking the same – hang in there – it will all go so very quickly.

Some of our best

Celebrating our School Officers

We celebrated School Officer Day with our hard-working, always smiling Facilities team on Wednesday this week. Mo, Jo, Brian and Lucas work tirelessly across our vast 43-acre site. Each day, they keep 84 (!!) facilities operating, and maintain the appearance of our beautiful grounds and Farm. On behalf of the Corinda community, we thank you for all your effort!

100 Days Remaining Celebration

Year 12 students hit pause on their studies earlier this month to celebrate 100 days until graduation. This Corinda tradition is a wonderful way to bring the cohort together, acknowledge their hard work and remind them of all the things to look forward to after their final assessments.

Corinda rower wins silver medals at recent Regatta

Year 10 student Cameron Dugdell performed exceptionally well at last weekend’s South QLD Schools Conference Trophy Regatta, bringing home two silver medals!

Placing second in both the Boys Year 10 Single Scull and Quad Scull (a composite quad with Kenmore SHS), Cameron will next compete at the South QLD Schools Regatta in July and then the QLD State Championships in September. Congratulations Cameron! We wish you continued success.

Sewing the seeds of success

Fashion HQ at Corinda is full of colour, pattern, prints and progress! Since completing a drawstring bag in their Sewing 101 unit in term 1, Year 8 Fashion have further developed their sewing skills this term and produced boxer shorts. The distinctly Australian range of boxer shorts were made using Australiana-themed fabric with native flora and fauna and Indigenous art. Thank you, Ms Thederan, for guiding such a successful cohort.

Alumni becomes first female technician for major truck dealership

Southern Truck Centre's first female technician and Corinda State High School Alumni Rachael Heufel's interest in the transport industry began at school. From apprentice to fully trained technician, Rachel shares where her journey began when a teacher asked if she would be interested in a Cert II in Heavy Diesel.

In other Alumni news, the new light-hearted romantic comedy, A Perfect Pairing which was released on Netflix last month was directed by Class of 1986 student Stuart McDonald. The LA-based film director was mad about film during his time at Corinda. He made two films in his senior year, which cemented his place in an elite program at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. The classic film, Mr Electric starring Ernie Dingo, was made by Stuart while at university. Described as an outstanding Art student, keen observer of people and “fire-breathing” busker on the Mall on weekends, Stuart resided close to the school and relied on the first bell as his alarm clock. Congratulations to both Rachael and Stuart. We cannot wait to see what you do next!

Planning for improved bicycle and scooter parking at Corinda

Corinda State High School has been selected to take part in a bicycle and scooter parking survey by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).

The purpose of this research is to identify current bicycle and foot scooter parking demand and supply at Queensland schools and to understand patterns of use by students and staff as a key input to the review of PSTIS bicycle parking requirements. The research will also seek to understand current opportunities and barriers to increasing uptake of bicycle/ foot scooter parking across Queensland.

If you would like to contribute your experiences and assist in improving bicycle/scooter parking at schools, we invite you to complete the following online survey by Friday 24 June 2022.

Do we have your student’s up-to-date health plan?

Schools can assist students with health support needs such as diabetes, epilepsy, asthma and anaphylaxis. However, it is important to ensure they have an up-to-date copy of your child’s health/action plans. Speak to the relevant Dean or contact Student Services to discuss how they can support your student. If needed, we can access the State Schools Nursing Service for support to make sure your student is safe at school.
