Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Friends,

It was great to finally be able to conduct our Year 12 Formal Breakfast last week. The Year 12’s got a pleasant surprise to see the Assembly Hall formally decorated to set the scene for our students. This was a special event for our 2022 Seniors and they were treated to a fully-cooked breakfast – created and served by our Year 11 Hospitality students. Our two presenters from yLead provided some inspirational stories and words of encouragement for our students, along with a little bit of challenge and fun. It was great to see them engaging with this.

Congratulations to our Year 11 Hospitality students and staff who presented a high quality and healthy breakfast for our students.

Open Day

Our students made us very proud at our annual Open Day. It was wonderful to have so many students come along and take a leadership role sharing the stories of our school, hosting tours and sharing their learning in the diverse programs we have on offer. Always a great day and we had some very positive feedback from people who interacted with our staff and students. Congratulations Corinda!

NAPLAN Week

This week, our Years 7 and 9 students are undertaking NAPLAN testing. A little more complex this year, with testing conducted online. Hopefully, this will not impact student performance or be a distraction. Overall our students were more than prepared and we approached the testing in a very calm and considered way. Our emphasis with students is that it is one measure to tell us how much they have grown with their literacy and numeracy, and how we as a school can help them to improve in preparation for their Senior studies.

Year 10 Career Education

Our Year 10 students are engaged in their Career Education program in preparation for their pathway planning this year. An exciting time for our Year 10’s as they start exploring the many and varied options available to them.

Open Day ‘a remarkable success’

Corinda State High School’s recent Open Day was a remarkable success with over 800 people visiting our beautiful campus. Prospective students and their families were treated to a rain-free day to explore numerous departmental displays and programs on offer at Corinda.

Corinda’s friendly and welcoming nature was on full display with many enthusiastic student volunteers sharing their experiences with prospective students. Our exceptional staff also gave generously of their time and insights.

Roving musical performances, a mobile petting zoo, Culinary Excellence tastings, sweet sushi making, automative cars and student stallholders were just some of the highlights. A special shout out to all past students who attended our Alumni event. One foundation student travelled all the way from Melbourne to join in the celebrations! Thanks also to our Real Estate Principal Sponsor, Harcourts Marketplace for the Mother’s Day raffle and also local business, Studio Pilates Oxley for kindly donating a $250 voucher to one lucky member in the community.

If you did not get a chance to join us at Open Day please get in touch with our Enrolments team to discuss future enrolment opportunities – enrolments@corindashs.eq.edu.au. Programs of Excellence queries can be sent to excellence@corindashs.eq.edu.au.

Junior students learn anti-bullying messages through acrobatics

Years 7, 8 and 9 have been entertained and educated by ‘Backflips Against Bullying’ - a program that features high-energy performances by incredible acrobats. The performance aims to build resilience and provide practical tools to help bullying victims and empower students to hold each other accountable.

The program featured three entertainers who performed and spoke about varying aspects of bullying including exit strategies for the victim, deliberate social exclusion, the consequences of retaliation, resilience, cyber-bullying, physical, verbal and social harassment, the consequences of our actions, acknowledging our mistakes and making a change, consent, inclusion and team building.

International students get up close to native animals

Last week, our new International students were introduced to Australia’s unique native wildlife when they visited Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. This time-honoured Corinda tradition, enables new students to experience Australian culture upon commencement of their secondary schooling journey.

We have welcomed 12 students from Narau, Vietnam and Japan this year. It was an absolute pleasure to watch all of the students enjoy new experiences at Lone Pine. The students watched a “Birds of Prey” show and “Sheep Show”. The kangaroos and lorikeets were a huge hit on the day, and they loved the koalas but everyone noticed that they were quite smelly! We want our students to continue experiencing Australian culture. We are off to a great start!

Ag Tech students gain real world insight from guest agronomist

Bayer Crop Agronomist, Richard Jackman, dropped in to discuss crop protection with the Year 10 Agricultural Technology class. Richard inspired students about his personal story, sharing how he raised a prize-winning bull as a member of his high school’s Show Team.

The students then worked closely with Richard to identify the key details of a chemical product label. Finally, there was a practical activity looking at spray nozzles and their effect on droplet sizes. Richard capped off the discussion by sharing the great number of career opportunities available in agriculture.

Riding to State Titles on horseback

Year 8 student Layla represented the interschool equestrian team at the SEQ Regional Championships over the May Day long weekend. Over the course of the 3-day event at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre, Layla and her horse Blonde Rose performed exceptionally well, notching up third overall in Show Horse Hunter and qualifying for States. She also added two qualifiers for States in the Dressage. An outstanding effort overall Layla. Well done!

A Year 9 student reviews the 7 Stages of Grieving by Grin and Tonic

“The Year 8 cohort, together with the Year 9 Excellence students and Year 11 Literature, had the pleasure of viewing the 7 Stages of Grieving by Grin and Tonic Theatre Troupe at the end of Term 1. This play highlighted numerous significant challenges that Aboriginal and Torres Straight people experience on a daily basis, focussing on the calamitous effects of colonisation and the devastating aspect of systemic racism that continues to plague Australia today.

The play consisted of many different experiences of First Australians, and the portrayal of each event was extremely eye-opening for me personally. It helped me acknowledge that, while this country may have grown from its past problematic ways, there is still a deep-rooted issue that needs to be tackled, and I found it encouraging to see that there are people who are passionate enough to share these sensitive experiences in order to make a difference.” – Fiona (Year 9)

Research to support babies and families living with an autism spectrum disorder

Are you expecting a new baby? Does your baby have a family history of autism? ENACT is an online intervention that harnesses the power of parents’ everyday interactions with their babies to support infant development – and parents’ own wellbeing – from the earliest months.

If you are currently pregnant, and your baby has a first degree relative (mother, father, sister or brother) diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, you may be eligible to take part in a trial of the ENACT program as part of a University of Queensland research study.

If you are interested in taking part, or to find out more, click on the QR code below or contact the ENACT team - Miss Kavindri Kulasinghe or Dr Andrea McGlade (Chief Investigators) on 3069 7547, email uqenact@uq.edu.au, or visit
