Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends,
We have had a smooth start to the term, and with further restrictions lifting, we look forward to returning to some sense of normality with staffing and attendance. We continue to encourage staff and students to stay home if they have any flu-like symptoms. With close contact restrictions lifting, it is important to be vigilant and regularly test to ensure there is no risk if someone in the household has tested positive. Anyone who is a close contact is required to wear a mask during the 7-day period.
Last week, our students made us very proud as they honoured the sacrifice and contribution of those who lost their lives while serving their countries. We conducted three ANZAC ceremonies last Friday to ensure all students had the opportunity to pay their respects to the ANZAC tradition. In addition to this, our student leaders joined Deputy Principal Mr Andy Noble and myself at the Sherwood RSL dawn service on Monday morning. I would like to congratulate our student leaders for taking the time to participate in such a significant community event and for making the effort to attend at such an early hour. Our presence was very much noted by community leaders.
It was great to see so many parents take up the opportunity to attend Parent Teacher interviews this week. If you were unable to attend and would like to have a discussion around your student’s progress, please feel free to call Administration to arrange an alternative time to meet with your teachers.
Lockers
Year 7 students are in the process of being allocated their lockers. The remainder of the locker order has arrived, however we had significant damage from the flooding and now have to replace some of the older lockers. We have replaced these with the current order received, which means we will be short of lockers in the Senior school. As a result, we will not be issuing lockers to Year 12 students this year. This will allow us to allocate lockers across the rest of the school in the coming weeks.
NAPLAN 2022
This year we are being required to undertake NAPLAN online. This has involved extensive preparation with the students as it will mean additional pressure to ensure technology is working properly. Staff have been working with the students to ensure they are confident with devices in order to confidently undertake the testing in this mode.
Uniform Supplies
We have been informed that all uniform items are now available from The School Locker. They have also addressed the issues with their online ordering and corrected the data that was conflicting with their stock availability. We are now following up with students who do not have correct uniforms and ensuring families are able to support the uniform standards.

Commemorating Anzac Day
As part of this year’s ANZAC Day commemorations, Corinda State High School students paused to remember those who have served past and present at an Observance Ceremony held last Friday.
Under a backdrop of moving war imagery and stirring musical performances, special guests including Project Corinda Army Cadets CAPT(AAC) Aleisha Gray, Jess Pugh MP, Harcourts Marketplace Sarah Bailey and Chris Mihalopoulos and P&C Association President Stefano Girola laid student-made wreaths alongside school leaders.
Student leaders also represented the school alongside Executive Principal Helen Jamieson on the 25 April at the Sherwood Indooroopilly RSL Sub Branch dawn service.
Lest we forget.

Alumni part of winning QUT design team
Class of 2019 graduates and QUT Creative Industries students Tara and Rhiann Steenstrup helped create a winning sound and art experience for the new Northshore riverside Maritime Green precinct. As part of their university studies, the students were tasked by Economic Development Queensland, a State Government-funded company to design a creative concept that would help activate the new precinct; connecting and educating visitors about the area’s Indigenous and maritime history.
The ‘Sound-Dome’ design win is an excellent example of how our school’s innovative, future focused learning and problem solving is delivering outstanding results to our students and the community.

Vale Alumni
Sadly, over the holidays, we lost two Corinda connections – Chris Bailey, a past student who ‘invented punk’ as lead singer of The Saints passed away over the break. Chris revolutionalised the music industry and put Brisbane on the map in the 1970s. Mr Jacob Hicks, one of our senior Music teachers shares how Chris’ legacy lives on his classroom (see image below).
In other sad news, Pat Heenan who was once Acting Principal for some time at Corinda and then became our Executive Director Schools passed away in the UAE. Pat was a true educational leader who was passionate about education. He constantly challenged the system; enacting change to improve our work.

Connecting the school community with Daymap
Corinda State High School’s parents and carers will soon have access to a new one-stop learning and student management system called Daymap. The new digital platform aims to connect the school community allowing parents access to real-time data around attendance and class learning.
Timetables, attendance records, the school calendar and academic performance plus much more will be available on Daymap. Students can complete class work on Daymap and teachers can set homework tasks allowing parents 24/7 anytime, anywhere access to the classroom. Other features include excursion management where parents can sign permission slips online.
As a BYOD school, Daymap aligns with Corinda’s vision for what we want from technology in teaching and learning; effective and useful tools that support continuous assessment and feedback between you, the school and your student. We look forward to the platform delivering great results and providing students with key information and structure that will help them manage their own education.
The first two features available to parents will be attendance and the school calendar. Please keep an eye on your email over the coming weeks for registration and log in details. In the meantime, watch the video below with Deputy Principal Mr Tom Bates to learn more about Daymap. Mr Bates will host a Daymap information session on Wednesday 11 May 2022. 5 steps for making your student’s mental health a priority in 2022 (and beyond)
A new term can also be a good time to think about making your student’s mental health a priority. Whether they are an avid goal setter, or they consider April just another month of the year, everyone can benefit from being mindful of what’s going on upstairs.
Follow these steps to invest in your mental wellbeing in 2022.
- Understand what mental health is
- Cultivate mental wellness
- Find ways to decrease stress
- Take time out
- Get help when needed
For further information on these 5 steps visit:

Our school-based youth health nurse, Nicola Collins provides individual health consultations with assessment, support, health information and referral options related to mental health. Nurse Nicola is on campus Tuesday and Thursday and parents and students can request an appointment by emailing nurse.corinda@health.qld.gov.au.
Student drivers must be registered with the school
During the senior years of schooling many of our students become drivers and start driving themselves to school. Whilst this is a significant and exciting rite of passage for our young people it is critical that we know who they are. Therefore, we request that if you have a student driver that you download the Register of Students Driving to School form and complete with your student and return it to school as soon as possible. This is to ensure the safety of your student plus all passengers who are required to be listed on the registration form.
Register student drivers here.
Become a Homestay host
With the return of international students to our school, our International program is about to expand and we need caring families to host students. These students stay for two terms or longer. Ideally, we would like families with students who attend Corinda State High School. Our International student would need their own bedroom and would be included in all family activities. Three meals a day plus snacks must be provided.
If you are interested please contact Andrew Breen or Lisa Thompson on 3779 0217 to discuss the program in further detail including all roles and responsibilities and homestay payment.
Building up the beef market
The Year 10 Agricultural Technology class recently had a virtual meeting with Russell Lethbridge, owner of the Werrington Cattle Company, a commercial tropical cattle operation, based north of Hughenden in North Queensland. Russell is also a Director of the Australian Meat and Livestock Corporation. Werrington Cattle Company consists of a Brahman herd of 3000 Breeder cattle.
Class members spoke with Russell about the finding in their recent Cattle Yards Design assignment. Mr Lethbridge also shared his insights into cattle facilities and how they work on his properties. Russell encouraged students to consider a career in the beef industry as it introduces new and exciting digital technologies.
