Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends,
What a crazy term it has been and I am ever so glad to turn the page on Term 1. It was wonderful to be able to finish the term with our Academic Awards of Excellence evening – even though a little late. It was great to be able to acknowledge the achievements of our students and come together as a school community. Our student performers were also very impressive and it was a great opportunity for them to finally perform on stage. We also enjoyed our Year 7 Badging ceremony on Friday where we officially welcomed our Year 7 students and presented them with their school badge, with the help of local member Jess Pugh MP (pictured below). Each student took the time to write a letter to “Future You” and post it in the mailbox as they received their badge. They will be presented with this letter on their graduation day in 2027. What an introduction to high school our Year 7s have had.
Our Year 12 student leaders along with Mr Pilkington created some positive school spirit on Friday morning cooking pancakes for students and handing them out as they entered the school. This created a very enjoyable atmosphere and the added bonus was a very special Easter Bunny handing out Easter eggs and greeting the students. So nice to be able to have some fun and see so many smiling faces.

2021 Ready Set Play! – Academic Awards of Excellence
The heart of Corinda beat loud and proud on Thursday night as the Corinda Vanguard kicked off proceedings at the Academic Awards of Excellence. The annual celebration brings together the school community and celebrates last year’s academic achievements across all year levels.
Senior Dux of the Year, Chau Nguyen led the Class of 2021 award winners while Fletcher Doyle juggled an armload of accolades when he was handed the Junior Dux of the Year perpetual shield by the Department of Education’s Mr Joseba Larrazabal.

Congratulations to all our award recipients especially our 2021 Year 12 graduates. Their “True Grit” and perseverance against a backdrop of COVID-induced interruptions was on full display as Deputy Principal Mr Andy Noble shared their outstanding results including two graduates achieving the equivalent of an OP 1 and 51 students achieving an equivalent OP 1 – 5.
The night embraced this year’s school theme, Your Toy Box – Your Toy Story with oversized toys creating a magical backdrop for artistic interludes by Corinda’s talented Arts students including Emelia Stacy and Aaron Truong, Dance Troupe, and talented vocalists singing the national anthem.
Representatives from Corinda State School, Sherwood State School, The University of Queensland, Sherwood Indooroopilly RSL, Harcourts Marketplace Oxley, and our P&C Association presented awards to a number of current students. Highlights included:
ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership Award: |
Olivia Hollis |
ADF Future Innovators Award: |
Olivia Hollis |
RSL Sherwood Indooroopilly Sub Branch Citizenship Award: |
Jayden Lavatai |
UQ Outreach Student Achiever Award: |
Kimberley Greenaway |
Junior Secondary Leadership Award: |
Madeline Eastment |
Saluting the outstanding success of our students, Executive Principal Helen Jamieson capped off the night by reflecting on the little moments that last a life time. “As children, we played with things just for fun, but behind the fun we learned how to deal with the reality that followed those formative years,” she said.
“I am sure we all have that one toy that we can remember fondly and as we reflect on that one toy we can absorb its message – a constant reminder of the valuable learning this toy enabled over time. Simply – toys make every day lessons more memorable. Like the toybox and its contents, Corinda presents so many opportunities for learning and creating special memories.”

Uniforms, hygiene products and a game of basketball boost flood affected families
Thank you to everyone who kindly donated to our recent Flood Relief Fundraiser. Dozens of hygiene packs have been distributed to flood affected families. A special shout out to the Brisbane Bullets who donated 100 tickets to flood affected students and families. A game of basketball is a welcome distraction for all!
We have had to set up a pop-up shop in our Guidance Officer space for all the uniform donations we have received – thank you! In addition to flood-related assistance, did you know our highly-skilled Guidance Officers, Teresa Riley (Junior Secondary) and Ashleigh Black (Senior Secondary) can work collaboratively with parents, carers and students who are receiving any support services external to the school. They can be contacted via the emails below.

Pure musical immersion at Instrumental Music Camp 2022
One of the many highlights of the year for our young musicians, the Instrumental Music Camp is a whirlwind of fun, friendship and fine performances. This year, four instrumental music families converged at QCCC Brookfield to combine forces to form seven bands led by a rag-tag group of misfit music teachers.
Highlights across the 3-day camp included musical movie madness with an Encanto singalong, the Year 12's hilarious Trivia Night and the 11th Corinda Camp Composition Competition (COVID Edition 2.0) where Ms Keenan's Simply Elastic Fantastic Strings wowed the judging panel with witty lyrics and urban-fuelled slam poetry song writing skills.
Thank you also to the leaders of the Boombasic Brassheads, Pow Pow Percussionist and Wonderfully Whacky Woodwinds (Mr Messenger, Mr Hicks and Mr Stewart) for all of your patience, sweat and musicality. The students mastered more than 25 songs in three days. What a phenomenal success! Congratulations to all of Corinda's Bands and String Orchestras!
