Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends,
Our students have settled back into routine and are very much focused on upcoming assessment at the moment. Unfortunately, the cows that have been relocated to smaller paddocks here at the school since the floods have presented some challenging behaviours. Seems they were found truanting from the Farm! Our Deputy Principals were called to escort them back to their room! All in a day’s work, but we are happy they are safe and well with us.
It was pleasing to see that Corinda State High School was listed as one of Queensland’s high achiever schools in the Courier Mail this week. Our school was named by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority in its latest MySchool update as recording exceptional NAPLAN results. It is so rewarding to see the hard work of our staff around Reading, Writing and Numeracy being acknowledged. Our school is very focused on these important foundations and we continue to make this a priority for our work.
We hosted Mt Maria College, a Brisbane Catholic College campus and Fulton Trotter Architects this week. They toured our new Research and Innovation Centre, viewing the innovative learning spaces while gaining an understanding of the research behind the design and purpose of this state-of-the-art facility. To read more about their visit, check out the School News section below.
The House spirit was alive and well on Thursday as our students participated in the Cross Country. It was a beautiful day; our students were so good with their hats and the participation rates were the best we have seen. Our students deserve to be congratulated. It was also great to see some of our parents sitting in the streets cheering our students on – and I know the students really appreciated this. Food for thought for next year with how we engage our parents more in these activities.
P&C AGM
Just a reminder that the Annual General Meeting of the P&C Association is set for Wednesday 30 March at 7:00 pm in A Block. At this meeting all membership lapses and new membership forms need to be submitted. You do not need to be in attendance to submit your membership at an AGM, however you do need to be present at a general meeting if you are submitting a membership form. All positions will be declared vacant and new elections will take place. This meeting will then be followed by a General Meeting. All new members are welcome and the P&C has some really exciting plans for 2022. Look forward to seeing you all there.
Regards,
Helen Jamieson
Executive Principal

Senior leader claims Lions Youth of the Year - Club Champion
Year 12 students Shashi Kubsad and Micaela Anstey, our 2022 co-School Captain represented Corinda at the recent local club final of the Lions Youth of the Year contest. Competing against St Aidan’s, QASMT and Aviation High, Shashi and Micaela endured an interview by a panel of judges, responded to two separate impromptu questions (for two minutes each) and then delivered their prepared five-minute speeches.
Shashi addressed ‘leadership’ in his speech while Micaela spoke passionately about ‘heroes’. Both exceeded expectations and we commend them for their participation, especially Shashi who won as Club Champion and moved on to the Regional Final against Ipswich Grammar and Ipswich Girls Grammar, St John's College (Forest Lake) and Toogoolawah SHS. The regional final of the Lions Youth of the Year followed the same format, an interview panel followed by speeches (both impromptu and prepared). Although Shashi missed out on being crowned regional champion, he performed outstandingly and did Corinda proud.
An excerpt from Shashi’s award-winning speech about ‘leadership’.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m going to start by asking you what does this mean (badge) to everyone. It’s a piece of metal that you pin to your shirt and is engraved with a title and a name. Everyone knows what it is, it’s a badge of captaincy.
Now how many of you think you deserve a title like this one? How many of you don’t?
See, there’s a large portion that don’t or do put their hands up to either of those questions. But what if I told you everyone single one of you has one of these, or has the power of one of these, even if you think you haven’t earned it…
Leadership isn’t defined by the badge you wear, it’s about the influence, inspiration and impact you can make on someone’s life. And everyone here can do that, everyone can help or guide someone - it’s not the big changes you make but the little impacts you can have… We all look up to leaders in our own right, like sporting captains to inspire or motivate us. But that badge doesn’t define us as a leader, every one of us has that power, inspiration and influence to impact someone’s life. It’s not in the badge you wear, it’s in here [heart].”

FEX students selected to represent Australia
Three Corinda students involved in our Football Excellence (FEX) program were recently selected for Australian Futsal teams. Senior students Imogen Rowsell and Stephanie Bayes were selected in the U19 Australian Futsal team set to tour the USA and Phoenix Thatcher (Year 9) will tour Spain in July with the Australian Football Association U14s. This is an outstanding result for our FEX program which aims to develop and assist elite Queensland junior football players in their pathway towards State, National and International representation.
“The FEX program is well structured and has enabled Phoenix to learn new skills and strategies that he has taken over to his club and competition games. Corinda Coach Vaughan Hogan is a positive role model which has been fantastic, as we can see Phoenix developing into the player he is so dedicated to be.” Tarlie Burnett, Phoenix’s mother praising the Corinda FEX program.

Six Houses – One Family at Cross Country
The Cross Country carnival rolled onto campus this week with many students displaying an outstanding effort competing for their House group with pride!
With a new course to navigate and with resident alpacas in the spectator stand, students embraced the sunshine and took to the event in droves. Ultimately, BUNAR House won the event followed by MOORI and PIRRI (a second place tie), KABUL, DIBBIL and YARRAMAN.
Thank you to all staff and students who took part on the day and to Mr Bateson, Head of HPE who worked tirelessly behind the scenes in the lead up to the event.

Corinda named one of the state’s high achievers in recent NAPLAN results
A mixture of Queensland’s richest private and superstar state schools including Corinda State High School have been revealed as the state’s high achievers in the most recent NAPLAN results.
The Courier-Mail listed the schools named by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority in its latest MySchool update as recording exceptional NAPLAN results. More than 35 Queensland schools recorded a NAPLAN subject score rating of “well above” the average score, when compared with students with a similar background.
RIC building attracts leading architect
This week, Mt Maria College and leading architect firm Fulton Trotter toured our Research and Innovation Centre (RIC), which has quickly developed a reputation as an exemplar in agile learning environments.
The group visited each area of the multi-level space, observing students in classroom settings, talking with staff and learning about the practices and programs this state-of-the-art facility has enabled; delivering positive outcomes for our students.
The group were impressed with the unique multi-use space but were equally captivated by the amount of natural light and views from the large picture book windows that capture our expansive grounds and city views. Luke Reed, Mt Maria’s Principal was overheard saying to Ms Jamieson, “Who would have thought, this campus was located so close to the CBD.”

Community leadership unites to support primary to secondary transition
Making a smooth and effective transition from primary to secondary schooling requires long-term, genuine and sustainable collaboration between schools. It requires schools to work in close partnership on all aspects of a child’s education, sharing of information and resources in order to ensure each child experiences a continuity of service and support. This partnership model was unpacked with leaders in our community at the inaugural Corinda Showcase.
Attended by representatives of Sherwood State Primary School, Corinda State School and Darra State School, the event showcased the curriculum and talented staff behind Science, Languages, Literacy and English at Corinda. Wellbeing was also a timely focus area with Guidance Officer Ms Riley sharing her department’s response to flood affected families and leaving guests with a student-made heart keepsake that they were encouraged to squeeze when a little love, comfort, hope and courage is needed.
The Showcase is intended as a seasonal showcase but as today’s event wrapped up with a long list of ways to collaborate including teacher-led workshops, think tanks, and the sharing of facilities, staff and the odd goat or two… it signalled the beginning of something more.

Share the Dignity
We are so excited to be one of the first of 62 schools selected to receive a Dignity Vending Machine (DVM) as part of the Share the Dignity in Queensland schools initiative. The initiative aims to foster positive educational outcomes and alleviate emotional distress for students in need by allowing them to focus on their education rather than on accessing supplies to manage their period.
The DVM will be located in the female toilets in F Block and will be dispensing free period packs which contains two pads and six tampons in Week 10, term 1.
Job Opportunities
We are looking for a Humanities teacher
An exciting opportunity exists for a motivated and innovative educator to join the team at Corinda. As a member of the Humanities faculty, the educator will be responsible for delivering engaging lessons for Modern History, Years 9 and 10 History and Year 9 English.
