Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Friends,

It was a huge relief to be able to welcome students back on campus on Monday morning. While we still navigate the disruptions to roads and public transport networks, our staff and students have exercised great patience and care in managing these obstacles over the past few days.

Our staff and families have had different impacts – being inundated by floodwaters, power and network outages, negotiating services to restore homes, and trying to secure temporary accommodation. Our thoughts are with all our families who are currently experiencing these challenges right now. Our P&C Association has kindly offered support and assistance in any way which will ensure students are able to continue their learning. We are currently gathering information on those who are impacted and will be working with the P&C to identify support measures. If you require assistance or support, please do not hesitate to contact our Guidance Officers, Teresa Riley, Junior Secondary (taril0@eq.edu.au) and Ashleigh Black, Senior Secondary (ablac246@eq.edu.au) or Rachel Logo, our Youth Support Coordinator (rlogo0@eq.edu.au).

We have been overwhelmed with donations of uniforms from our local community and are very grateful for the generosity of parents, past families and local businesses including Little Big Feet Footwear & Podiatry who kindly donated 60 pairs of shoes. Thank you to all who have been so kind and caring. At this time, we are reminded of the wonderful sense of community we have here at Corinda. I have heard and witnessed so many heartfelt stories in our local area of neighbours rallying, friends and family converging, and perfect strangers helping others by travelling long distances to volunteer their labour.

I have also heard some wonderful stories of our students in the community over the past week and I think it is only fitting that we acknowledge these selfless young people who took initiative, offered their time and demonstrated care and concern for their community. We have started compiling a long list and if you know of any amazing stories, we would love to continue sharing. I feel very proud of the way in which our students demonstrated their leadership and initiative in the community.

This week we conducted our first assemblies for the year. With the lifting of COVID restrictions we were finally able to bring year level cohorts together to press the reset button. It was great to finally be able to address the students and to see them together. For our Year 7 students, it was their first high school assembly. Our Year 12 students were also able to receive their Senior 2022 badges, signifying their year as the leaders of Corinda State High School. We are finally back on track, despite the ongoing challenges of COVID. Our students have certainly faced some real-life lessons in resilience and how to bounce back.

We are heading into some important assessment in the coming weeks. Staff have been very mindful of the disruptions and have managed to amend and modify where possible. Please keep an eye on your students at home as they navigate their assessment, given the disruptions they have had this term.

Regards,
Helen Jamieson
Executive Principal

How the flood disaster brought our community closer

We’ve been inundated with stories of generous students offering their service to the community in the aftermath of the recent flood disaster. From hand delivering freshly baked cookies to flood affected residents and manning barbeques for Mud Army volunteers to helping local businesses remove debris from the premises and providing emotional support to elderly relatives, these acts of kindness demonstrate how our students embody the Corinda Way! The Latin words on our school crest - Hodie Quoque Cras translate to Not only for today, but for tomorrow also. This school motto impresses on our students to make our school, and the world, a better place for today and for those who will come tomorrow.

We are immensely proud of all our students whose acts of ‘paying it forward’, some of which are shared below, provided a necessary boost of happiness and optimism; contributing to a more positive community.

Oliver Lewis, Year 7
Oliver has been a tremendous help to his family in cleaning up his grandparent’s flooded property. He helped evacuate his grandparents by walking them through the flooded water while reassuring them that they were fine. He then spent three days helping to clean out their house and also visiting other people in their street to see if they needed help.

Jessica Hurley, Olivia Wahl and Eva Hough, Year 7 (pictured)
This trio of friends led by Jessica helped distribute donated bread to the residents stranded in Corinda Chase. Jessica also assisted with cooking duties at the nightly Edmondson Street BBQ and managed to save valuable possessions including a pet bird from a friend’s elderly relative’s house on Cliveden Avenue on Sunday morning.

Thomas Le Sueur, Year 7 (pictured)
Tom helped elderly family friends move all their furniture out of the way of the flood waters and then gave up the best part of his weekend to help them clear away all the mud and save a fish or two along the way.

Lexi Winks, Year 8
Lexi’s cousins were affected by the flood, so she made muffins at a friend’s place as her home didn’t have power. She then jumped on her bike and delivered them, along with sandwiches and drinks to people around the streets of Graceville and Sherwood. Lexi also went back to her old primary school, Sherwood State School on Friday to help out with the cleaning of the sports shed and all of the equipment that was flooded.

Emily Guy, Year 8
Emily has worked tirelessly sweeping and mopping rising water from the bottom level of her house. She has helped clean, sanitise and sort what can be salvaged at home and offered support to her neighbours. She has accumulated clothes, books, toys and household items and donated to those in need. She even found the time to assist her local netball club, cleaning up equipment after water subsided from the flooded equipment shed.

Charlie Bateman, Year 8 (pictured)
Charlie was eager to help the Jindalee community recover from the floods and stepped in to help local business Fitstop remove walls and rubbish from their devastated business.

Josiah Alexis, Year 8
Alongside his brother and father, Josiah helped move heavy equipment and valuable office supplies to the upper level at Motor Neurone Queensland in Oxley.

Lockie Caruana, Year 8
Led by Lockie’s initiative, the Caruana family handed out hard-boiled eggs along the streets of Oxley to residents cleaning their homes. Kind, loving words and an energy-boosting boiled egg can draw a smile in the hardest of times.

Arabella Fijac, Year 8
Arabella spent half a day volunteering at a local aged care home, helping the staff with general duties and spending time with residents, as they had to take in 70 extra clients who were evacuated from a neighbouring facility. She also helped neighbours move furniture into vehicles in the driving rain, hand out sandbags and wash and dry precious photos damaged by the floodwaters.

Cameron Brennan, Year 9
An awesome flood recovery helper who helped clean up flooded properties.

Patrick Nixon, Year 9
Patrick has gone above and beyond helping his neighbours clean flood affected properties including his grandmother’s house. With his grandmother now sharing his home, Patrick has been very patient and considerate in helping her as she is very confused and unable to understand why she can't go home.

Hamish and Sebastian Jensen-Mazar, Year 9 and Year 11
Big-hearted bothers Hamish and Sebastian helped clean and restore their aunt’s house on Cook Street back to a liveable state. They also offered a flood-affected friend a place to stay while they got back on their feet.

Jarvis and Arlo Shoo, Year 9 and Year 7 (pictured)
The Shoo brothers helped out with the flood clean up in Yeronga.

Grace McLennan, Year 9
Community-minded Grace baked 200 gluten-free and diary-free biscuits and then delivered them to flood affected streets in Graceville and Yeronga. Grace also assisted in the relocation and return of neighbourhood horses from Sherwood State School to Corinda State High School.

Cian and Olivia Beggan, Year 9 and Year 11
Olivia and Cian Beggan showed limitless initiative by baking sweets and savoury pastries which they packed in an esky full of cold drinks and headed for the streets of Oxley and Corinda. They spent four hours handing out the baked goods to flood affected residents.

Abbey Woolf, Year 9 and Karl Poulsen, Year 10
This dynamic duo moved damaged goods from flooded homes, cooked a BBQ for volunteers, and delivered meals and drinks in the Edmondson Street area.

Natan Klayman, Year 10
Natan helped a local family all day clearing stuff from their house. Showing care and consideration, he respectfully asked what the family wanted to keep or throw out and didn't fault in lifting, moving, and carrying what he could in the rubbish and mud.

Hanton Davy Snell, Year 11
With no power and no ability to undertake online learning, Hanton took it upon himself to help his neighbors on Cliveden Avenue who were impacted by the floods. The work was physically taxing but Hanton didn’t complain and demonstrated great compassion to his flood affected community.

Micaela Anstey, Year 12
Donning wellies and a big smile, Micaela helped clean out a flood affected house in Corinda last Thursday.

Nick Bobbermien, Year 12
There were numerous sightings of workhorse Nick out and about helping his community recover from the floods.

Jessica Hurley, Olivia Wahl and Eva Hough, Year 7

Charlie Bateman, Year 8

Jarvis and Arlo Shoo, Year 9 and Year 7

Tom Le Sueur, Year 7

5,6,7,8!

Our Dance Excellence students recently immersed themselves in a fantastic full day intensive program with new dance partner, Phluxus2 Dance Collective. The workshops provided students the opportunity to learn and be inspired by some of Brisbane’s best dancers, to ask questions about career pathways and to ultimately develop and refine their technique.

Award-winning Phluxus2 Dance Collective seeks to challenge concepts of best practice, creating performance work that is relevant and change making. The 15yo company has performed across Australia and internationally including New York’s the American Dance Guild Festival and has held artist-in-residencies with the Firkin Crane in Ireland and Brisbane’s Metro Arts to name a few.

We are thrilled to welcome them on board and look forward to working with them closely in the future.

Students to monitor Oxley Creek in citizen science project

Corinda’s Year 7 and 10 Science students will work alongside Griffith University’s Dr Jarrod Trevathan and the Queensland Chief Scientist on a citizen science initiative for water quality monitoring as part of the state government’s Engaging Science Grants program.

Alongside Park Ridge State High School and Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre, Corinda students will assist Dr Trevathan and his team to help deploy customised Internet of Things (IoT) environmental monitoring equipment in local waterways in order to proactively monitor water quality and terrestrial parameters in near real-time.

Students and teachers will be engaged in collecting and interpreting the data to underpin STEM curricular, enhance environmental awareness and support smart agriculture initiatives. The project will also be used to promote pathways into the School of ICT’s programs.

The Engaging Science Grants program aims to help increase public participation in Queensland scientific research and STEM-based engagement events and activities. For more information about the program, visit the below website:

Have you lost your school hat?

With the half way point already reached in term 1, it’s an important and timely reminder to make sure all items of clothing worn at school or on school excursions as well as personal supplies such as pencil cases are named so that misplaced items be easily reclaimed.

Lost property is managed at the Payment office in D block. If items are clearly named, Payment Officers will email students and Parents/Carers. Unclaimed and unnamed items will be published in the school newsletter, the Parent Connect Facebook page and Daymap (at the end of each week). Parents/Carers or students seeking lost items should present at the Payments office and provide details of the misplaced item. Staff will publish a notice in an attempt to locate the misplaced item. If located the student or parent will be notified. More information about the school’s lost property service is outlined in the Lost Property Policy linked below.

If you are interested please contact Andrew Breen or Lisa Thompson on 3379 0216 or email international@corindashs.eq.edu.au to discuss the program in further detail including all roles and responsibilities and homestay payment.
