Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Friends

This week our thoughts are with our Year 12 students as they undertake their final external exams. Our students are well and truly ready and I am confident they will make us, their families and themselves very proud. They were all in very good spirits as they prepared for their English exam on Monday morning.

This weekend and next weekend we will be opening up our Research and Innovation Centre to provide a quiet study space for our students. We will have our after-school tutors and some volunteer teachers present to support students with their studies if needed. We are very fortunate to have a number of our teaching staff offer their time to support our students on the weekend. We certainly believe our students are worth it and wish them all the very best over the next few weeks.

When do we use Maths in the real world?

Have you ever made this comment and wondered how and when will we use mathematics formulas, graphing, equations? Our students are experiencing this first hand. Our Mathematics department is focused on developing problem solving and mathematical modelling skills throughout the junior curriculum in preparation for senior studies. I am very impressed with the work students are undertaking in this area. Our Year 10 students have just undertaken an assignment where they have had to design a roller coaster. The students used their equations and formulas to design it, then produced their designs on a 3D printer. The quality of work our students are presenting is commendable and it is great to see them using their mathematical skills in real life projects, understanding the importance of mathematics beyond the classroom. Below is a photograph of one of the designs our mathematics students produced as part of their work – and they were able to do this in our Maker Space in the new Research and Innovation Centre. Real life learning and the wonders of technology to bring designs to reality.

Year 11 Transition into Year 12

Last week our Year 11 students participated in an alternate program to develop team building and bring the cohort together as they completed their Year 11 studies and now have begun their Year 12 unit 3 work. Time to get serious and make every single mark count from this week onwards.

Last week we conducted our Leadership Investiture Ceremony to introduce our new student leaders for 2022. I am very much looking forward to working with our new leaders for 2022 and I take this opportunity to congratulate them on being awarded these honourable positions in our school. We will officially introduce our new leaders at Graduation and officially welcome them to their new roles at our Academic Awards of Excellence ceremony at the start of 2022.

And finally, this Friday is World Teachers’ Day. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and thank our teachers for their important role in our community and for the positive impact they have on the lives of our students. With the Ekka public holiday now falling on Friday, Corinda will bring forward celebrations and show appreciation for our teachers on Thursday 28 October. In the meantime, let’s hear from a few of our Year 8 students about the impact their teachers have on their education.

“Mx Byrne keeps class engaging and helps you learn on a higher level. I love the way they have conversations with you and treat you like a person and not just a student.” – Lily and Aisling

“My favourite teacher is Mr Turner. He’s nice, he makes lessons interesting and he gets me.” – Jett

“I like how Ms Davis makes lessons interesting and fun. She does games that relate to our learning.” – Abbey

Dance Night was back live on stage for 2021! Featuring dancers from Years 7 – 12, in curricular, extra-curricular and Excellence classes, the night was filled with talent, enthusiasm and strong cheering from the Corinda community. In between performances, past, present and future dancers were celebrated, including the fantastic achievements of our Troupe and Crew at the Dancelife Unite competition. Crowning the leaders of 2022

Corinda State High’s School Captains for 2022 were presented their Senior badges at the Investiture Ceremony held last Friday. Incoming School Captains Micaela and Jayden spoke of their vision to improve the feelings of community and connection in Corinda, after the challenges of the past 18 months.

Micaela and Jayden are supported by House Captains Mavis, Camryn, Sarthak, Oprah, Madeliene and Pippa. Members of the 2022 Student Council also include Indigenous Captains Emelia and Trinity, Arts Captains Tylan and Jas and Sports Captains Zeek and Jessica. They have already begun their responsibilities as future ready school leaders, as the Year 11s commence their next unit of study.

Corinda students make positive impact in the community

Last week, Corinda students with a passion for social justice were given the opportunity to experience street outreach with charity organisation Rosies. As part of the Corinda Cares program, the students commenced their four-hour shift offsite, where vans were prepared for the evening’s outreach and conversations are shared to develop the sense of community that Rosies’ take on to the street.

The students then spent two hours on the street sharing friendship with a simple drink and a bite to eat and gained an invaluable insight into just how easy it is to make a positive impact to those less fortunate themselves.

Outdoor learning thriving on the Farm

Corinda continues its outdoor learning connection with the Year 9 Agricultural Technology class getting up close and hands-on with livestock alongside grazing animal specialists this month.

Students mustered cattle and ran animals through the drafting yards at our Oxley Creek Common facilities. School Vet, Dr Bruce MacIntosh educated students about the complexities of microbes in a cow’s stomach while The University of Queensland's Dr Max Shelton led the class in an exercise in pasture assessment. Students were surprised to hear that a large animal can eat 60 to 80kg of grass in a day!

Your School Council needs you!

Our highly valued School Council currently has a vacancy for a Community Representative. Comprising 12 members including staff, students, parents, P & C President, Community Representatives and the Executive Principal, the Council oversees the strategic direction of the school. The Council meets approximately twice per term.

For further information please contact the school on 3379 0222 or email your Expression of Interest to Principal@corindashs.eq.edu.au. Please include an introductory letter and an outline of your interest in contributing to the direction of the school.

Real world experience gained at Youth Parliament

The 2021 Queensland Legal Studies Youth Parliament held earlier this month, provided three Corinda students with the opportunity to represent the school in the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Pippa, Mavis, and Emelia participated in a second reading debate, debated an amendment to the Bill, and participated in an adjournment debate regarding the introduction and role of AI and automation in industry. The students represented Corinda with diligence and conscientiousness and received resounding “here here’s!” from their peers.

Supporting responsible and safe bus travel

A significant number of Corinda students travel on buses to attend school. All students have the right to a safe and enjoyable journey between home and school so we are asking our students, how can they be a safe and responsible passenger? Please view the documents below which outlines the Code of Conduct for school students and the expected standards of behaviour while travelling on buses.

Have you lost a school bag?

With the final Term of learning well underway, it’s an important and timely reminder to make sure all clothing worn at school or on school excursions as well as personal supplies such as pencil cases are named so that misplaced items be easily reclaimed.

Preparing today’s learners for uncertainty – a webinar for parents

'Uncertainty tolerance' (UT), or how we process and respond to unknown or complex situations, is increasingly recognised as an essential workplace skill. Uncertainties in the workplace are ever-present and we’ve seen shared, global experiences of this with the uncertainties surrounding work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday 9 November Associate Professor Michelle Lazarus will discuss the impacts of UT on students, and outline some strategies to help parents to support their children to improve their UT to prepare them for their futures in further education and work.

It’s time to get creative for a cause!

Grab your craft supplies along with your imagination and show Conservation Volunteers Australia how you can help to stop ocean litter at the source. The #SeaToSource competition is a chance to share your passion for marine life and a pollution free world. Students will have the chance to design a poster or video that shows how a common ocean litter item could be repurposed or reinvented, or how others in the community can be inspired to change their usage of these items, to create positive change for our environment.
