Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends
We have survived yet another term where so many things seem beyond our control - lockdowns, masks, vaccine rollout, postponed events and uncertainty. As usual our students have demonstrated their true grit and resilience and have remained focused on their studies. I am extremely proud of the way in which our students have complied with mask requirements and met their responsibilities in looking out for each others’ health and wellbeing.
Our year 12 students are currently completing their Mock Exams in preparation for their external exams next term. I am sure they have begun their countdown while preparing themselves for final assessment. Graduation is just around the corner and we are all hoping that we can enjoy the celebrations with them as a school.
This week our year 10 students are completing their active volunteering with community organisations. They always come back from this experience with such positive feedback and practical experience that they cannot acquire in the classroom. It certainly gives them an appreciation for the community organisations across Brisbane who do so much for those in need.
Agricultural Farm & Sustainable Futures Day
What a beautiful day we had last Saturday at the Farm. It was great to see so many families enjoying our amazing resources and learning about our sustainability practices. The students made such an impression with everyone and they are to be congratulated for the way in which they demonstrated their knowledge and such passion for their work with the animals. The technology being used at the Farm provides a rich learning environment for many of our subjects and all students benefit from this real-life data. Under the leadership of Deputy Principal Tom Bates, our school farm is a showcase for everyone and we are attracting a lot of interest from tertiary institutions, primary schools, other secondary schools and even the ABC. ABC TV weather presenter Jenny Woodward was one of the many visitors at the Open Day and Tom Bates was on the ABC airwaves being interviewed by weekend presenter Kate O’Toole on the morning of the event. It really is hard to believe we have a working farm just 12 kms from the city!

Carnivale Day
We are all really looking forward to our Corinda Carnivale – a day filled with house spirit, fun, teamwork and carnival atmosphere. Our students deserve this after the challenges of term 3. A little slice of the Ekka coming to our school.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents and carers for your support through this term. Your support for Learning@Home meant that our students were able to continue their learning. I do hope you manage to enjoy the beautiful Spring weather over the break and take some time out to relax. Stay safe and I look forward to an exciting term 4 with you all.
Face mask Reminders
We encourage families to take stock of their facemask supply over the break and purchase adequate supplies of disposable or reusable facemasks if needed. It appears that facemasks will be required for some time.
The World Health Organisation recommends that:
- Disposable face masks should be discarded after use each day
- Fabric face masks should be washed in soap or detergent, preferably with hot water, at least once a day.
Don’t forget, we actively recycle used facemasks via the Zero Waste Box™ located in the RIC foyer area. Everything collected through the box is sorted and processed into raw materials that can be reused instead of being sent to landfill.
Thank you to our students, staff and families for your commitment to keeping our school community safe and healthy.
Lost Property
Over the past weeks as the weather has become warmer, a number of winter sweaters have been found in the grounds. Unfortunately, none of these are named and we are unable to locate the owners. Replacing lost property is a major inconvenience for families and an unnecessary expense. If you have lost a sweater recently please ask your student to check in at the Roll Room to see if it is there. A school sports jacket was also found and washed waiting to be collected.
A Good News Story
It is always a pleasure to receive messages from members of the public about our students. Below is an email sent by someone who attended our Farm Open Day. I could not be prouder of our students:
I am writing as I feel strongly that your students involved in Saturday’s Farm Day need to be highly commended for their effort and enthusiasm for their endeavours.
We heard about the day on the radio and came as a family – to learn more about sustainable farm practices for ourselves and our son, and to look at animals for our 3-year-old granddaughter. We were not disappointed! All the students (whether from Year 7 or older) who spoke to us were excellent ambassadors for the school, articulate and knowledgeable about their animals or interests and engaged enthusiastically with the various ages of our family group. They each showed a genuine interest and care for the welfare of the animals and delighted in telling us funny anecdotes about individual chickens, goats or sheep, as well as facts about them. Other students who spoke to us about weaving, bee-keeping and growing crops were similarly enthusiastic about their activities.
I gather the students would normally have shown their animals at the Ekka; however, the ‘judging’ of animals on the day was informative and well-run and we heard a little from the teacher, but mostly from some of the older students who spoke very well.
I think our granddaughter summed up the day well, “When I go to school, I want to work on the farm too.”
I hope you will pass on my comments to all the students involved in this program and the teachers responsible for them. Kind regards, Lisa Galletly.

Some of our best
Corinda students tread the boards at Billie Brown Theatre
The Scene Project conducted in partnership with the Queensland Theatre Company has encouraged our drama students to engage in the creative process of performance, from rehearsal through to presentation for the past four years.
This year’s program granted our students unrivalled access to a new unpublished commissioned play, an artist in residence in Kurt Duval from Green Man Productions and then the opportunity to perform their version of the play under the bright lights at Billie Brown Theatre in West End.
Coordinated by Senior Drama teacher Maureen Billiau, this performance opportunity is offered at Corinda State High School each year as an afterschool group open to all drama and non-drama students from all year grades. Thirteen students from years 7, 9, 10 & 12 participated this year.
“I love this project because it is all about creative collaboration between like-minded people from different age groups & backgrounds communicating their own individual take on a new play especially written for them,” Maureen said.
Well done to all involved!

Supporting cultural diversity
At Corinda State High School, we care for and teach students from different backgrounds and cultures by fostering belonging and inclusion through a variety of programs and initiatives like the recent Multicultural Showcase. An afternoon of fun, food and cultural dance and music performances from around the globe, the event celebrates the amazing diverse culture within the Corinda community. The event also raised $963.75 for our Fiji fundraising to install solar panels for a partner school. Thank you to all involved including our fantastic House Masters (pictured manning the barbeque).
Behind the lens in year 12 Media
The year 12 Media students were excited when their Photography Workshop this term finally went ahead. Jason from Buckshots Photographic Services set up four studios with different lighting situations so that students could experiment with modelling shots and still life. All the amazing work they created on the day will go towards their final assessment item for the year.
