Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and friends

We are officially half way through the year and our staff and students are well and truly ready for a well earned break. It has been a busy term 2 for all and it is good to see our students involved in extra curricular activities once again. The Instrumental Music ensembles have been going strong, Dance Troupe have been busy rehearsing and our Athletics competitions have kept our enthusiastic athletes focused, with track and field events being held this week. In addition to this we have Gala days in full operation again.

Our Year 11 students are to be congratulated on the completion of their first semester of senior studies. The results are very pleasing and it is great to see how well they have transitioned into their senior subjects. We are also very happy with the tracking of our current year 12 students and we hope this will continue in the next term. It has been a tough term for them and they are working very hard, knowing that every piece of assessment counts this year. Thank you to all our parents and caregivers for your ongoing support.

Research & Innovation Centre

This term we have enjoyed our new innovative spaces that we have worked hard to deliver. I am thrilled to see so many students accessing the different learning areas we have to offer. It is wonderful to hear how excited they are about these new facilities. We have referenced a lot of global research on learning environments and tried to deliver innovative spaces that inspire creativity, thinking and curiosity. Every area of this building is defined as a learning space. The Lemon Myrtle scenting in the building is intended to awaken the brain and help concentration. Our Year 12 students are enjoying their own cafeteria and the Maker Space is constantly booked with classes from all faculties – creativity in action across all disciplines. It is wonderful to see so many students using their break times to interact in the fiction / social space whether it be reading, playing chess, constructing Lego or doing work. The place is a buzz of activity.

The quiet study and research area will be officially opened next term. This is the second library space that accommodates approximately 70 students and will be used for research lessons, tutoring and quiet study. A different area with a different function for academic work and independent research. I am sure the students will be excited to see the contemporary furniture that has been placed in the quiet study area.

This Friday our whole school will come together to participate in the annual interhouse Athletics Carnival. It is always great to see our staff and students enjoying the day together and immersing in their house spirit.

Wishing all our Corinda families a safe and enjoyable winter holiday break. Thank you all once again for your ongoing support throughout term 2 – we have such a wonderful school!

Some of our best

Queensland Tennis State Champions!

This year, our fantastic Tennis Excellence teams have been competing for the honour of attending the Queensland State Championships. Our boys qualified for the championships in a gruelling and exciting match during the Metropolitan West finals against Brisbane Boys College, beating them for only the second time in the history of the contest! Our girls team qualified directly into the state finals.

Last week, the teams made the trek to Rockhampton to compete in the Queensland State titles. The girls’ team won a total of 16 of the possible 18 games on their first day! Semi-finals was a close contest against Palm beach Currumbin State High School, but our girls eventually lost overall four matches to two, with all four matches they lost being a closely fought contest, which could have gone either way.

Disappointed but not deterred the girls stepped up in their final match for third and fourth playoff against Sheldon college and won four matches to two. This put our young and talented girls team third overall, earning them a spot on the podium and a medal! This team will be a strong contention to win state and national titles in the future as they are not just great tennis players but have unity within the group that will lead to success.

Our boys team cruised through the first day as top seeds, hardly dropping a game setting them up nicely for day two. On day two we played our last pool match against last year State Champions The Southport School (who we lost to in last year’s state finals). The boys were fired up to make amends for last year and ended up winning five matches to one, setting them up with confidence for the semi-finals and finishing top of their pool.

The boys played Sheldon college in the semi-finals, winning all six matches with ease to qualify for the finals. At this point the boys had won 29 matches and only lost one making them deserved finalists.

The final was played against Kelvin Grove who had won the strong Metropolitan North region. The boys all came out firing winning all four singles matches, only dropping seven games of the possible 36. Though Kelvin Grove stepped up and won both doubles matches, Corinda still claimed the win beating Kelvin Grove by two points and becoming State Champions for the first time!

Our school is absolutely thrilled with the results. Special mention to Kent Linyard, the coach who has taken these teams all the way and nurtured their talents to create the QLD State Champions! We are so proud of Kent and the tennis students for their fantastic achievements!

High Flier!

Earlier this month, Year 10 student Sienna Head attended the Air Force Work Experience Program at Royal Australian Air Force Base Amberley. She partook in many work experience activities on the base including introduction and familiarisation of the Health Operational Conversion Unit, F/A 18F at 6 Squadron, Air Traffic Control at 452 Squadron, C-17 Globemaster at 36 Squadron, Military Working Dogs, Weapons Training Simulation System, 1 Expeditionary Health Squadron and RAAF Security and Fire School. As well as this, she won the award of “Most Enthusiastic Participant” presented by No. 23 ‘City of Brisbane’ Squadron.

She was also selected to attend the Governor-General’s Reception in honour of 80 Years of the Australian Air Force Cadets at Admiralty House in Sydney, hosted by Their Excellencies, General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and Mrs Linda Hurley.

We cannot wait to see what amazing feats Sienna achieves in her bright future.

Big Science Competition

During May, the Mathematics/Science Honours and Platinum students competed in The Big Science Competition, an international online competition that challenges critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The students performed exceptionally well and enjoyed the opportunity.

Congratulations on these excellent results:

  • 22 Distinctions awards
  • 5 High Distinction awards
  • Above average in every Science strand

Congratulations to Taj van Tongeren who was announced as the Year 9 top student!

Congratulations as well to the following students who achieved a High Distinction:

  • Jarvis Alini-Jenkyn
  • Hamish Flatman
  • Jasper Heinz
  • James Mitchell
  • Thomas Williams

A further 22 students were awarded a Distinction. Year 7 student Antonia wrote this about her experience:

‘The Big Science Competition’ is a thrilling and exciting competition, in which the participants answer multiple interesting questions, which cover various scientific fields. This competition explains a topic with a paragraph, and then asks a question on the paragraph, which you must answer using your scientific knowledge as well as the information provided. It’s a fun and cool experience in which you learn new things about the world and its inhabitants. Personally, I found it very exciting and a great experience.

SHEP Success

Congratulations to Sharada Naresh (year 8) and Alicia Mann (year 9) who recently took part in the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP). The Queensland State Honour Ensemble Program is delivered in partnership with the Griffith Conservatorium of Music. It is a huge honour for students to be invited to participate and whilst there, work with some of the most up and coming musicians across the state, as well as some of the most eminent national and international conductors. Resident conductors have specifically commented on our students’ achievements and excellent attitudes. Congratulations to Sharada and Alicia – what a fantastic accomplishment.

Fun in year 12 Chemistry

This week our year 12 Chemistry students performed an experiment on turning a sodium alginate molecule (a solution) into macromolecule through gelation (turning it into a gel). Sodium Alginate (a thick solution) is used as thickener and emulsifier in the food industry. Also, Alginate is used for dental impression materials, drug encapsulation, wound dressing and as a component of the antacid Gaviscon.

Bake Sale Project

For our academy project, we decided to volunteer a bake sale for our community at the Corinda State High School Open Day. My group made and sold goodies and donated the profits to Corinda Cares. It was an exciting experience… from baking together, making posters, and talking with many jolly customers, our days of preparation went by in a flash.

We baked so many cookies, muffins, cupcakes and refreshing candied fruit called Tanghulu. We were the best team, collaborating and discussing what recipes we should consider and assigning different tasks. It was very pleasing to see our efforts become a success. For all our hard work, we earned $195.50 in total!! All of that money has been donated by us to Corinda Cares. I really do hope we get this opportunity again, it was a pleasure for us to sell what we could make for our community.

School Transport - Term 3, 2021

Dear Parents/ Carers,

The school has been informed that there will be a change of the operator providing school bus services commencing at the start of Term 3 2021 (12 July 2021) that may impact on your student’s journey to or from school. There will be no change to scheduled departure times, arrival times or the route travelled. The changes are to the service operator and the operations regarding bus stops and Go Cards.

  • Morning and afternoon services for routes 758, 762, 766, 768, 769, 770 PM, 789 - Inala to Corinda, 789 - Inala to Corinda SHS - Glenala SHS, 790, 792, 793, 794 and 797 are presently operated by South West Transit, however from Monday, 12 July 2021 these services will be provided by Transport for Brisbane. There will be no change to scheduled departure times, arrival times or the route travelled.
  • If your student does not currently catch their bus from a bus stop, Council bus drivers will initially continue to stop for them where it is safe to do so. Students should raise their hand as the bus approaches to show that they would like the bus driver to stop.
  • To ensure passenger safety, Council is building new stops where it has been identified that they are required. You may notice this happening in your area. Students can board or disembark at any of these stops as soon as construction is complete. They must remember to hail the bus or press the stop button in plenty of time to allow the driver to stop smoothly and safely. Once all the new stops are completed, expected to be by the end of July 2021, students will only be able to board and disembark from any of the clearly marked bus stops along the route.
  • School students can still travel on the Council services and all student travel passes will remain valid. We strongly encourage parents to register their student’s Go Card on the TransLink website and parents can then organise for automatic top-ups of those Go Cards. TransLink will be monitoring whether students are using a valid Go Card and, though they will not leave a student behind, it is an offence to travel without a valid ticket/Go Card and can result in an infringement.

For more information visit the Brisbane City Council website or call (07) 3403 8888.

For full timetable information visit the link below or call TransLink on 13 12 30.

With children spending more time online in the past 12 months, yet still craving social interaction, Omegle offers a virtual solution to making new friends.

But like all online interactions, there is an element of risk.

Omegle is an extremely unsafe site. Here’s what parents and educators need to know about the dangers of Omegle.
