Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and friends
What a wonderful celebration we had with our Year 7 students and families last week as we formally inducted our Year 7 students, presenting them with their school badges. I was ever so proud of these students as they presented on stage. It was great to see so many families taking time from their busy schedules to be there to celebrate with the students. I believe symbolic ceremonies such as this create a sense of ownership and pride in our school and it is always great to present the students with their letters to their future self when they graduate. A special memento for this point in time in their secondary education.
Congratulations to our year 9 student leaders who did an amazing job of hosting the ceremony. Our guest speaker, previous school captain (2020) Hannah Hall-Young, was a great inspiration for our young students and it is always lovely to have past students return to share their stories.
This week our year 7 and 9 students are undertaking their NAPLAN testing. We are very confident that our students are familiar with test taking techniques and it is always our aim to approach the testing with a sense of calm by ensuring students are kept in regular classrooms in their class groups for the testing. We do value this data as a measure of students’ value add. We consider this feedback important for informing our teaching practices, identifying gaps and patterns so that we can respond and ensure our students are achieving their potential with Literacy and Numeracy. It is one piece of data that we use along with academic performance data and other formative testing. If you would like more information on this or would like to understand how NAPLAN can support your child’s learning needs please do not hesitate to contact the school and make a time to come and discuss. It is important that we stress that NAPLAN is not a report card for the student or the school, however we do value this so that we can improve student outcomes.
We are entering the busy side of the term and it is important that students have well developed routines and study habits, ensuring their time is managed wisely while having a balance with other commitments. Academic buoyancy is a key characteristic for students to be successful in high school as they navigate assessment, feedback, competing demands and the usual teenage distractions. Our Guidance Officers, Deans of Students and House Masters can assist students in developing study plans and routines if they need support in establishing this. Please encourage your students to take the time to plan their weeks in the term so that their total fitness and wellbeing is maintained through the busy times.

Representing Australia!
Year 8 Football Excellence student Phoenix Thatcher recently participated in the National Club Futsal Championship in Sydney. Phoenix’s team played some amazing games, remaining at the top of the leader board for most of the competition. They eventually placed third out of 14 teams.
Upon Phoenix’s return to Brisbane he received notification that he has been selected to represent Australia in the U13s team with the Australian Futsal Association! Phoenix will be touring New Zealand in November with the Australian team. Well done Phoenix!
Agriculture Students at the QLD Spinners and Weavers Open Day
On Saturday 8 May, eight of our Agriculture students attended the annual Open Day for the Queensland Spinners, Weavers, and Fibre Artists Guild. The students were accompanied by three alpacas and four ewes to give the public a chance to pat, feed and experience the animals up close.
This is the second guild open day our students have attended and they have become quite a popular attraction. The day consisted of market displays of fibre spinning, loom weaving, sock making, felting, and many other stalls with plenty of items for sale.
Our students and their alpacas opened the fashion parade with a walk by, showing off a lovely alpaca felted scarf, worn by Rocky (the alpaca!) The scarf was made by the talented Helen Walters from the combined fleece of all three of our alpacas. The students were fantastic on the day, answering questions from the public, helping children and adults feed and pet the animals, and setting a great example for the school.
Jess and Jasmine showing some of the visitors our animals.
Fleece from our alpacas we donated to the guild cleaned up, sorted, and on sale.
My Future Options Expo
On Wednesday the 5th of May, Senior Schooling held the My Future Options Career Expo in the assembly hall. The day was a great success, with numerous exhibitors attending. During the expo, students were able to explore what options are available to them for their futures. Year 11 and 12 students attended during their break time in preparation for QTAC applications.
Year 10 Students have been preparing in their SLP Lesson and used their Career Passport to target their communication with exhibitors, asking questions and documenting their research into the pathways they are interested in pursuing in the future.
Vendors who exhibited on the day included a range of universities, TAFE and other trade colleges and the Australian Defence Force, with hundreds of students across year 10, 11 and 12 attending the expo. It was great to see students preparing for their future in such a productive way.

Year 8 2020 Merit Ceremony
On Tuesday 4 May our year 8 students from last year were celebrated at a Merit Awards Ceremony. 20 students were awarded Merit Distinction, Merit High Distinction or Service to Sport awards at the ceremony. Congratulations to all of the students who received an award for their wonderful achievements in 2020 – a year like no other!

Year 12 Unit 4 Studies
Year 12 Philosophy and Reason students commenced their Unit 4 studies on Rights with a team challenge in our new Makerspace environment. Adopting different leadership styles within their groups they were challenged to construct the largest possible building out of marshmallows, skewers and toothpicks. The team with the winning entry stood over one metre tall!
This lesson was valuable in helping the students reflect on the purpose of different types of leadership and, more widely, government, in our contemporary society.

Corinda SHS Alumni Big Band
Attention past students of Corinda State High School!
We are attempting to “get the band back together” for school Alumni who have fallen out of practise on their instruments and are eager to blow off the cobwebs during the mid-semester break in 2021 (4th of June to the 22th of July).
We are hoping that this opportunity will help past students maintain their musical skills but also a chance to maintain the relationships that they formed during their time in the Instrumental Music Program.
The Alumni band will rehearse on Friday evenings (6pm-8:30pm) in the Old Hall/Music Block for 7 weeks with a final performance on the 22nd of July and the possibility of performing again at the annual Music of the Night performance evening on the 22nd of October. Please see below for a detailed list of rehearsal dates and times.
We are looking to form a Big Band; a smaller ensemble for our first attempt at this program requiring largely Brass (trumpet, trombone), Woodwind (saxophone) players with a small number of Rhythm section players (piano, drums, bass, guitar, and vibraphone). Musicians who play other instruments can also be accommodated with parts being rearranged and orchestrated (just let us know what you play).
I hope that you are all well and, if you are interested in taking part in this Alumni Ensemble please get in contact with tstew97@eq.edu.au. We would love it if you could share this opportunity with other past students of Corinda State High school too!

2021 Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
Later this term, students will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The department and your school are looking at ways to collect information on these important areas so we can support our students in the best way possible.
The QEW Survey is designed to measure how state school students view their wellbeing and engagement and provides an evidence-based approach to positively and proactively support students’ mental health, school engagement and wellbeing.
Results from this survey will collectively tell us about students’ levels of wellbeing and engagement and will allow us to better support our students and meet their needs.
The QEW Survey will take place between May 31 and June 25 this term. More information will be emailed to parents and caregivers closer to the time.
