Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and friends

Welcome to term 2. Hope you were all able to enjoy some down time following the lock down. Here’s hoping we will have a smooth and settled term with no further interruptions. The first two weeks have been very busy, filled with events, gala days and leadership activities.

The exciting news is that the Fiction section of the new Research and Innovation Centre has opened for student access. It is wonderful to see so many students making use of this exciting space at break time. There is plenty of energy around the function of the space and the students are enjoying having a variety of spaces to access.

We are still patiently awaiting the arrival of furniture for the research and quiet study space, which will provide opportunities for students to complete their assignments as well as research lessons for classes. We have clearly defined the quiet study space and separated it from the ‘social’ space of the centre. Hopefully you can view the centre on Open Day on Saturday 22 May.

It is great to be able to once again provide face to face Parent Teacher interviews. The survey conducted with parents indicated very strong support to go back to the face to face model. If you were unable to attend on the evening and would like to meet with teachers in person or arrange a telephone interview, please do not hesitate to contact the administration and we can coordinate an alternate time for this to occur. Parents are able to arrange interviews with teachers at any time if they feel the need to discuss their child’s progress or clarify any concerns.

Last Friday we conducted our school Anzac Services. Our students are to be congratulated on the way in which they presented and conducted themselves. Students leaders and Symphonic Bands members did an outstanding job of leading our school at this service.

Congratulations to our Student Leaders who had an early start on Sunday morning and chose to represent the school at the Graceville Community Anzac Service. Our students exhibited the highest standards and were a credit to Corinda State High School as they participated in the ceremony and laid wreaths on behalf of the school.

Executive Principal

West Brisbane Gala Day

On Monday 29 March Corinda State High School competed in the first West Brisbane Gala Day of the year. We had over 120 students competing in tennis, basketball, volleyball and touch football. All teams were competitive with many successful results.

Congratulations to the girls Tennis teams, year 8 Boys Volleyball and Year 8 and 9 Boys Basketball for finishing in first place! These teams will now progress to the Metropolitan Finals this term.

Thank you to our wonderful coaches for their work with their teams. Also, a big thank you to our senior students and community volunteers who assisted as officials at the boys basketball.

Super 7s Netball

Recently, five of our girls netball teams competed in the local Southside Super 7s Competition at the Metropolitan Netball Association.

The newly formed Year 7 team started to work well together in the early games, while the Year 8 team proved solid and won against some tough schools, eager to put up their hand and umpire games where necessary.

The Year 9s looked strong from the start and dominated in defence. Well done to Tiara, who was recently selected in the Metropolitan West District netball team; we wish her luck for the upcoming competition!

The year 10s did well and proved strong in the shooting circle, winning one of their games in a tough draw. The senior team had fun and showed the rest of the squad a high standard for Corinda netball.

The girls have been attending Thursday trainings, where they work on their fitness, ball skills and match play. As the squad continues to grow, anyone is welcome to come to Thursday trainings, whether they are new to the sport or looking to practise defence. It was great to see all the Corinda girls supporting other teams and putting up their hands to referee other games.

Giant Pumpkins!

The year 8 Agriculture students have been carefully growing giant pumpkins since January in preparation for the 143rd Royal Queensland Show last Saturday. They entered the category for the Largest Giant Pumpkin Grown by a School.

The students’ teacher Ms Doyle said “it was a very challenging growing season with lots of setbacks but from one vine we harvested three pumpkins, with the largest weighing in at 32.5kg!”

We are hopeful that the pumpkins will still be in good shape to show off on Open Day.

Commemorating Anzac Day

On Friday 23 April our school came together in three separate observance ceremonies for Anzac Day. We were pleased to welcome Jess Pugh MP, Cr Nicole Johnston and Graham Perrett MP to the school to help us commemorate. Our service was made particularly poignant thanks to the wonderful efforts of our catafalque party.

On Sunday 25 April our student leaders joined Mr Noble and Ms Jamieson at Graceville Memorial Park to commemorate Anzac Day. Our leaders laid a wreath at the memorial service and paid their respects to our service men and women. Lest we forget.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent Teacher Interviews will occur in person this year from 3:30 pm until 7:30 pm on Thursday 29th of April in the school Sports Centre. The interviews are set for a 10 minute duration with allowances for establishing contact between teacher and parent. All parents and carers should have received a booking link via email from Andrew Noble. If you have not yet received the link please first check your JUNK email folder before contacting the school.

Interview bookings will close 24 hours before the interviews. If your student is in a co-teacher class and you wish the co-teacher to also be in the interview please let the teacher know when you book by emailing the teacher and we will try our best to accommodate. Year 7 – 10 students should also have completed a reflective exercise in their OneSchool profile on how they use feedback and how this will help achieve the grade they want. Please ask you students to show you this before the interviews as it may also help with establishing conversation.

This year we are on SOBs as our booking platform so there will be a different process to what you have used before. Please find documents below to assist the booking/planning process for Parent Teacher Interviews.

Media Consent Forms

Our school is currently updating our student records and over the coming weeks your student may bring home a State School Consent form for completion and return. This important document protects the use of your student’s image at school and must be completed in order for your student’s image to appear in our school’s annual Koondoo yearbook. Should your student bring this form home, we ask that you complete this document at your earliest convenience and return it to the school as soon as possible.

Please note that parents may place restrictions on the consent given and this information can be noted in the “limitation of consent’ box at the bottom of page 3. Parents who have already completed this document upon student enrolment will not receive a new form to sign as this form is only required to be completed once in the duration of your student’s enrolment with us at Corinda State High School.

Should you wish to check your student’s consent at any time, please contact us on enrolment@corindashs.eq.edu.au.

A 21st Century Library

At the beginning of this term we were thrilled to finally open the fiction library area in the new Research and Innovation Centre! Students have thoroughly enjoyed all the new resources, displays and interactive activities throughout this revolutionary learning space.

The Library is open from 8.00 am to 3.30 pm, Monday to Friday.

Student banking services no longer available

School banking services will cease to be offered in our school and all Queensland state schools from 31 July 2021. In line with several other states and territories, the Department of Education’s decision is in response to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s (ASIC) Review of School Banking Programs report in December 2020. Students will be able to maintain their banking relationship directly with their bank. Consumer and financial literacy will continue to be delivered to students as part of the Prep to Year 10 Australian Curriculum, including Moneysmart and the BuySmart competition.
