Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and friends

Welcome to the new school year. It was wonderful seeing our students reunite with their friends and teachers and settle back into the routine of the school day. A very warm welcome to all our new Corinda families. Our year 7 students and new enrolments have all settled comfortably and received a warm welcome from their teachers and peers.

Our year 12 students have returned very excited about their year ahead and have already embraced our school theme: True Grit – The Cowboy Code. Something tells me they are going to have a lot of fun with this.

Our students have presented in their uniforms looking very smart and committed to Corinda culture. Thank you to all our parents and carers for all your efforts in supporting our standards and expectations, ensuring our students are in uniform, ready for learning and organised with their materials and equipment. This has contributed to a very smooth start to the school year.

Facilities

Unfortunately, our new Research and Innovation Centre has been delayed due to problems with our water supply and the fire hydrants. We are eagerly waiting for this to be signed off so that our students can begin to enjoy this amazing new facility. Our year 12 students are very excited that they will have their own kitchen and dining space on the ground floor to enjoy.

I am very pleased to see our first major refurbishment of our student amenities finally completed. This is something our students in the past have identified as a major need in our school and I am so glad we have finally been able to make this happen. We do plan to complete a second block during the year with the aim of having all amenities at the highest standards by the end of the year.

Year 9, 10 and 11 2020 Merit Awards

On Thursday we hosted our Merit Ceremony for our Sporting, Arts and Academic high achievers for last year. Students were presented with their certificates to acknowledge their hard work in 2020.

Academic Awards of Excellence 2020

As you may be aware we did not conduct our annual Speech Night celebrations due to COVID-19 last year. Instead we will be conducting a combined Scholars Assembly where we acknowledge Dux of the School, ATAR excellence from our Seniors 2020, top in subject, year level academic excellence and year 12 badging. This will be an off-site after school event to be held at Riverlife in Seventeen Mile Rocks. All parents of award recipients, award recipients, past year 12 students receiving an award and all current year 12 students and their parents should have received an invitation to attend this event. I do hope you can join us for this special celebration.

Uniform Shop and School Locker

At the end of last year a decision was made to partner with the School Locker at Oxley in order to provide more extended options for parents to purchase school uniforms and supplies outside of school times. The school uniform shop continues to operate but will only be opened at limited times to assist students who are unable to stop at Oxley. We welcome your feedback on this service and hope that it assists very busy families. Online orders are still available on the website and any other school materials purchased at the Oxley store will also provide benefits to the P & C Association.

It is great to be back for another year here at Corinda – my 15th year and still loving this great school.

I look forward to meeting you all at one of the upcoming school events.

Regards,
Helen Jamieson
Executive Principal

Swimming Carnival Success

The 2021 Corinda State High School Swimming Carnival took place on 2 February at Dunlop Park Memorial Swimming Pool. The conditions on the day were great for swimming, but not ideal for spectating as the rain drove down for most of the day. It was great to see all the eager swimmers show their True Grit and persevere through the inclement weather. There were many great individual performances throughout the day, with a number of talented swimmers proving their ability and progressing to District Swimming on 10 February.

Congratulations to all age champions, and well done to the winning house PIRRI!

Our First Week of High School!

Last week we welcomed 13 classes of year 7 students to Corinda State High School. There has been as much learning outside of the classroom as there has been inside, with students getting used to having several teachers, multiple classrooms and so many new faces. Our Support Staff and Junior Leaders have facilitated lunchtime activities including intense games of Connect 4 and skipping, while other students have made their way to the farm to meet the animals.

As we reach the end of Week 2, students are feeling more comfortable and are getting the hang of high school life. Teachers are impressed with our new year 7 students and are excited to work with them throughout the year.

“As far as my first week has gone, I wasn’t too scared on the first day and I have enjoyed having a variety of subjects.” – Lachlan

“I have enjoyed the first week of high school a lot. I have enjoyed the engaging teachers and interesting lessons.” – Theo

“The first few days were very eventful and easy to get lost in and outside of class, however, I have come to enjoy Corinda’s subjects and settle into learning here.” – Jessica
