Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Friends

We have almost come to the completion of our year 12 external exams and they have gone very smoothly. Our students have approached them with confidence and we have received very positive feedback from the outside Invigilators who have worked across a range of schools over the past two weeks. Our students certainly committed fully to ensuring they put in their best effort. I am very proud of the way in which they have approached these exams.

A busy week ahead with the Graduation Ball and our official Graduation Ceremony. Unfortunately COVID restrictions have proved to be very challenging and we have had to cut back numbers of family members able to attend. We have also cut back on student attendance unfortunately. While this is not our ideal, we are very grateful that we can celebrate this very special day with our year 12s and families in a venue that allows us to progress with this event. Thank you to all families who have been so patient and understanding with the restrictions.

This week we held a special Remembrance Day service which we streamed across classrooms. Our students who participated in the filming of this service did a wonderful job and we managed to be able to take the time to acknowledge those who fought to protect our nation. It was different, but we found a way and our students did a great job considering the circumstances.

Have you read our new Strategic Plan? Do you find these documents overwhelming and difficult to understand? We are pleased to share our new digital animated Strategic Plan that you can watch. It is fully narrated and hopefully will help you in understanding our direction over the coming years. I encourage you to take the time to view this narrative. Please follow this link:

I am looking forward to the week ahead and our special celebrations with our senior students and families. Hard to believe our beautiful first cohort of year 7 students are now graduating!

Future Anything Competition

On Wednesday 4th of November, Helen Nguyen and Zeinab Mohamed Najeeb competed in the semi-finals for the Activate Future Anything National Competition where the best student-led enterprises pitched for the funding and support to launch their ideas out of the classroom and into the real world. Competing with 19 other groups from schools across Australia, Helen and Zeinab pitched their sustainable social enterprise concept, Heal It Journal, to a virtual panel of judges.

Heal It Journal is an eco-friendly, affordably-priced journal aimed at teenagers who experience low self-esteem or anxiety. The journals include life-changing resources, including information, links to support services, activities and strategies all designed for the unique needs of teenagers.

The judges were impressed with the enthusiasm and passion of Helen and Zeinab as they presented their pitch. They were announced as the runners-up for their semi-final group and were also awarded the People’s Choice category. This secured them a spot in the national grand final!

QUEST Academic Competition

The QUEST Academic Competition was very enjoyable and we learnt a lot of very interesting things. There were three areas within the competition that we competed in: Humanities, Maths, and Science. In Humanities we competed in the topics of ethics and value theory. It was very enjoyable and has given me a better view on how we make decisions in life. We then learnt how to analyse scatter plots by finding the line of best fit, gradient and linear equations for data in the Math segment. After that we learnt about neuroscience (subconscious thinking and imagination) and had to design and conduct tests based on this knowledge. Overall, I am really happy with the result that myself, Olivia, and Kavya achieved and I hope we get to have more experiences like this in the future.

QSS Teams Tennis Finals

The QSS Teams Tennis finals were held in Rockhampton in the last week of term 3. The students travelled with Mr Linyard and Mrs Carey up the Bruce Highway in the Corinda Bus for two full on days of competition. The girls finished the round games 2nd in their pool, going on to take 4th place in Queensland!

The boys team played extremely well, remaining undefeated until the Grand Final. In the final, the boys played The Southport School and were tied at three matches a piece. In the end, Corinda were narrowly defeated on a countback of games won across all matches. It was a great effort from our Tennis boys and a huge congratulations to both teams!

Under 15’s Football Competition - SPL Cup

Our Year 9 and 10 Football Excellence students recently participated in the U15 SPL Cup, a knockout competition to crown the best U15 boys and girls in the SPL for 2020.

In our Round 1 games, we placed with Harristown SHS and Aspley SHS. Our Boys won their first two games against Aspley SHS (2-1) and Harristown SHS (6 – 1). Our girls also played well in both games, Aspley SHS (2-2) and Harristown SHS (5 – 1). Both teams qualified for the semi-finals.

For the semi-finals, both our teams travelled to the Sunshine Coast where we played Kawana Waters State College (Boys) and Chancellor State College (Girls). Our Girls unfortunately were knocked out to eventual winners Chancellor.

Our Boys team however won their semi-final 2-0 in close and competitive match. Big shout out to Flynn Proctor for some excellent saves to keep Corinda in the match, and also to our two centre back’s Callum Rollinson and Fletcher Doyle for holding out against some of the biggest players we’ve seen in our competition. Our two goals were scored by Sebastian Jensen-Mazar and Amien Kleibo.

In the Grand Final, our boys played against Palm Beach Currumbin (PBC). PBC were easily the favourites in the competition, having much success in all SPL competitions to date. Our boys were also ready to compete and started out well going up 1 – 0 at half time with a goal scored by Sebastian Jensen-Mazar. However, in the 2nd half PBC became more physical and defended higher up the pitch. PBC ran away with the game and the win 4 – 1.

Well done to our Boys on reaching the Grand Final – you’re the first school team to do so in all SPL competitions so far. Congratulations!

Premiers Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual statewide initiative which aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning. This year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge Celebration Week saw the presentation of certificates to some of our recipients.

This year students in years 7 – 9 had to read 15 books between April and August and register their list with the librarian. Congratulations to Jade, Ada, Tomas, Sunny, Sharada, Octavio and Poorvi. In lieu of a school assembly (due to COVID restrictions), students were presented with their awards outside the library by English Head of Department Ms Hindmarsh. Congratulations to these passionate readers!

Thank you School Council Student Representatives

Our departing School Council student representatives Hannah and Mariana were presented with bespoke gifts as a thank you for their hard work on the School Council over the past two years.

The compass is significant to align with our Strategic Plan 2020-2023 - Future You. The inscription reads "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you have imagined."

Strategic Plan 2020-2023

We are very excited to share with our community this special version of our Strategic Plan 2020 - 2023. Click on the image below to watch our ideas and aspirations for the future of Corinda State High School come to life in this unique animation.

Remembrance Day Ceremony

Remembrance Day is a day to remember those who have served and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in war. This is acknowledged at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (11-11-11), with one minute of silence.

This year, Corinda commemorated a little differently on Remembrance Day to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions. At 10.45am regular classes ceased and teachers projected a pre-filmed commemoration ceremony onto the interactive screen in each classroom. Students virtually attended our Remembrance Day service, concluding with 1 minute of silence at 11am.

Lest We Forget.

University of Queensland – Online Study

There is currently a research project being conducted by Tianyi Ma (student of UQ), Saumya Singh (PhD candidate at UQ), Professor Matthew Sanders and Karen Turner. It aims to validate a survey measure of how families make changes in their homes and environment, and to explore the impact of climate change on families. The study involves children aged 12 to 16 – where one of their parents completes an online questionnaire, the first half is answered by the parent and the second half is answered by the child. It should take less than 30 minutes for each parent-child dyad to complete.
