Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Friends

Last week our year 12 students attended their final classes leading into their external exams. We finished off the week with a year 12 breakfast and it was great to see everyone in good spirits, enjoying their final day of classes. Special thanks to our newly elected year 12 leaders for 2021 who assisted in serving the current seniors their breakfast.

We are thinking of our year 12 students this week as they undertake their much anticipated external exams for their ATAR. I felt very nervous for them on Monday morning as they entered the hall ready for their first exam – English. Our students are well and truly ready for this and have worked hard preparing for their exams. I am sure they will make us very proud.

Business Students Shark Tank Competition

It was an absolute pleasure to be a part of the Business Department’s Shark Tank competition once again this year. I was so impressed with the innovative ideas and proposals our students came up with. We certainly have a lot of potential in our midst and I can honestly see some of their concepts becoming successful enterprises. The technology innovation proposals were very impressive and would most definitely provide solutions to some real world problems. These are real 21st century skills our students are developing here at Corinda. Congratulations to staff and students – exceeded your expectations!

Building Program

Our building program is making good progress with all projects on track for completion by the end of the school year. The new Resource Centre is beginning to take shape and is almost at lock up stage. I am so excited to see this project approach its completion – a much needed space for our students. I am sure our students will really appreciate the exciting spaces that have been designed in this build.

The F Block toilet refurbishment has also been much needed and we have funded this ourselves. It has been an expensive upgrade costing around $300 000, but so desperately needed for our students. This project was initiated by the student representatives on our School Council and has been in our plans for several years now. We will continue to prioritise upgrades of the remainder of our toilet facilities as much as we can once this project is complete.

The new HIVVE building, part of our Smart Farming initiative, is due to arrive in the coming weeks. This building will provide two STEM classrooms and the building itself will be part of the STEM agenda, as it is completely self-sustainable.

The new Art Studios and the Senior Schooling centre in the A Block refurbishment are amazing new spaces in our school. These are very modern and provide flexible learning spaces both indoor and outdoor. The Senior Schooling centre has been a popular area for our senior students as they have prepared for their assessment and completed assignments. The Art Studios are almost complete awaiting the delivery of some pieces of furniture.

Lots happening with facilities at Corinda at the moment and I cannot wait to see our students enjoying them when they are all complete. Corinda students deserve the very best.

Year 11 Leadership Day

On the 15th of October, the 2021 Seniors of Corinda State High School participated in team building exercises that helped us gain the vital skills needed to guide the school through the challenges we may encounter in the future. Using our developed abilities to guide students in our first house event as 2021 leaders, we were challenged and learnt many key concepts involving management, problem-solving and organisation within a time constraint. Utilising the pressure and fuelled by our house spirt, we were able to work together with our fellow student body to participate in the house event activities, creating a positive and friendly environment. During team building day, many students came together to not only show their ability to work as a team, but also their ability to be a leader. Students were motivated to go outside their comfort zone to develop skills that would help them with their future. Overall, with the support of teachers and their efforts with organising the team building day, as leaders we have been encouraged to reach our proposed future goals; participation and unity.

Netball Southside Super 7’s

Our year 7, 8 and 10 netballers recently competed in the Southside Super 7s Netball tournament. The girls were invited to enter this elite competition (predominantly for netball excellence schools) after a successful Metropolitan Finals series. The year 7/8 girls dominated division 2, winning all five games. While the year 10 girls had three out of five wins in division 1. Congratulations to both teams and a big thank you Ms Faith Wild, for all of your work with the teams.

QLD Champion of Champions Futsal Titles

Last week some of our Football Excellence students participated at the QLD Champion of Champions Futsal titles held at Nissan Arena. This saw some of the best schools verse each other in a knockout style competition, vying to be crowned QLD State Futsal Champions for 2020.

Corinda had the following age groups qualify for State Titles: 13 Years Boys, 13 Years Girls, 14 Years Boys, 14 Years Girls, 16 Years Boys and 19 Years Boys. Our results at the competition varied but overall we saw collectively the best results we have had in a long time from our school with four teams qualifying for semi-finals – an outstanding achievement!

Our 13 Years Girls were unlucky with results and were knocked out in the group phase of the competition. Our 13 Years Boys qualified for the quarter finals but were knocked out in a close match. Our 14 Years Boys & Girls were knocked out in the semi-finals. Our 16 Years Boys qualified for their third state semi-final going down to Helensvale State High School in another closely fought match.

A special mention goes to our 19 years boys who qualified for the grand final and narrowly lost to winners Chancellor State College in Golden Goal. These boys were originally Australian Champions three years in a row from 2015 – 2017. This year they made a conscious effort to finish with a strong result and we could not be more proud of their efforts in reaching this year’s state final!

Well done to all our teams and best of luck for 2021!

Basketball State Titles

Our Year 7 and 8 Basketball students competed in the Champion Basketball School of Queensland (CBSQ) state titles last week. They were impressive in their determination and skill and managed to top their pool and were announced third place in the state of Queensland!

Samuel was the whole competition’s overall top scorer and Emanuel was ninth overall point scorer! Congratulations to all of these up and coming basketball superstars. We are so proud of these results!

State Honours Strings Ensemble Program

Congratulations to Shashi Kubsad, Evan Baggaley, Kate Humphreys and Eloise Nutley who represented Corinda at the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University during the school holidays.

SHEP provides an opportunity for wind, brass, percussion, string and voice students to work in an intensive environment of musical excellence with their peers, under the leadership of a team of eminent conductors from the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. It was a very intensive three days of rehearsals, finishing with a concert on Sunday, which unfortunately parents and carers were unable to attend due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Enterprise and Innovation at Corinda SHS

This term our Year 10 Future Enterprise Studies classes and the Year 10 Digital Technologies class participated in our annual Shark Tank Competition. This was an opportunity for students to showcase some of the creative, innovative and eye-opening learning that takes place within our classroom walls.

Our top three marketing pitches from the Year 10 Future Enterprise Studies classes presented to the Sharks, as well as our top two technical proposals from the Year 10 Digital Technologies class. We also had an open display for special guests to interact with, which gave the audience a glimpse at the hard work that our students have put into their concepts. Our sharks for the event included Ms Jamieson, Mr Bates, Ms Nicole Dyson and Ms Ashlee Carrigan.

Our first category for the competition was the Marketing Pitch. Students in Year 10 Future Enterprise Studies have been developing their business concept for the past semester as part of their Future Anything journey. They began by identifying social issues or problems that they were both passionate about and felt that they could make a difference with. The winner of this category was Helen Nguyen and Zeinab Mohamed Najeeb for the business concept, “Heal It Journal”.

A big congratulations to Elise Broidy for being successfully shortlisted for the Future Anything State Competition. Her concept was shortlisted from over 200 applications, with only 20 concepts making it through to the second round.

Our second category for the Shark Tank Competition was the Technical Proposal. Students in Year 10 Digital Technologies have been tasked with the challenge to design a robot that solves a real-world problem at Corinda State High School. The winners of this category were Oliver Healing, C. Philpot, Ben Williams and Nhan Ho for their concept, “The Polease”.

Staff and students were also able to cast a vote for their favourite concepts in the People’s Choice Award. For their business concept, The Guardian, Shashi Kubsad, Mohammed Ahmadi and Ryan Bates received the most votes from the people. Also, for their technical proposal “Strashi”, Josie Anderson, Alexander Forster, Amily Le Souvannam, Camryn Newman and Jas Wonglohaphan all took home a medal.

A big congratulations to all students. It is not easy coming up with an original idea and then pitching it to a panel of sharks. We cannot wait to see what students come up with in 2021!

Plan Your Own Business Competition

Students from Corinda entered their business ideas in the Queensland Plan Your Own Enterprise (PYOE) Competition and have exceeded all of our expectations!

Vi Ngo was the winner in the individual division with her concept, “Cloud 9” - A safer and more comfortable virtual environment for users with mental health questions to confide in.

Liz Lau was Highly Commended with her concept, “The Redolence” - A charity that funds profits to support vulnerable unplanned pregnancy cases.

Shashi Kubsad, Mohammed Ahmadi and Ryan Bates took out the group category with their concept “Guardian” - a not for profit organisation providing opportunities for the disadvantaged through funds raised by selling fashion products.
