Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Friends

The developments of the past week serve to remind us that while Queensland has managed COVID-19 very well, we must not be complacent. We continue to adhere to Queensland Health advice and encourage all students and staff to stay at home and get tested if even the slightest of symptoms present. Unfortunately this has meant we have had significant staff absences and the time for testing to turn around is presenting staffing challenges at this critical time leading into assessment for our students. This is an unavoidable situation and our staff are working hard to ensure continuity of learning for all students. There is certainly a sense of ‘restlessness’ in the air across the school and we encourage parents to maintain close contact with us as we navigate these challenging times.

We are certainly drawing on our resilience, adaptability, flexibility and agility in our daily lives. It is good to know that we have found new ways of doing things and have not let these challenges get in the way of what we do, but I know there are days when I crave ‘normal’ – whatever that is these days!

Our students are certainly deep in assessment at the moment, particularly our year 11 and 12 students who are preparing for block exams. It is important that we do our best to keep them focused and on track. Routines are a necessity along with a healthy diet, sleep and exercise.

On a positive note I am pleased to report that we have found a new and exciting option for our Graduation Ball. Last week we announced this to our Year 12 students and they were very excited we this proposal. It will be a Graduation Ball like no other and I think Rob Johnston will even be looking down upon us smiling – despite no ballroom dancing. This year our students will be walking the red carpet at Movie World. Parents will be able to be seated alongside the Red Carpet to watch our ‘stars’ arrive. We will have photographs in front of the entrance, dine in main street under a maze of fairy lights, be entertained by the Superheroes (in keeping with our theme this year!) and they will have some rides available for the students.

The school has arranged a bus to transport the students back to Corinda for parent pick up at the end of the evening. Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions we are not able to have any dancing at school events. Movie World meets all the COVID safe requirements and I am sure it will be a very special night to remember.

Corinda Netball through to Metropolitan Grand Finals

On Wednesday our Opens, year 10 and year 8 Netball teams competed in the Metropolitan Semi Finals. The teams all played brilliantly with all three teams winning convincingly and progressing through to the Metropolitan Grand Finals next week! The results were as follows:

Opens Corinda defeated Caboolture 49 – 7
Year 10 Corinda defeated Redcliffe 30 – 23
Year 8 Corinda defeated Caboolture 38 – 7

Our year 10 Girls Football team have also progressed through to the Metropolitan Grand Finals so we will have four teams in total competing. What a great result for Corinda!

Nicole Dyson talks Entrepreneurship with Year 9 and 10

Last Thursday we were visited by Nicole Dyson, Founder and Director of Future Anything. Our Year 9 and 10 students are currently planning their own social enterprise and will be entering their ideas in the Future Anything State Competition. Nicole came and spoke with our students about what the judges look for in the applications and gave them some great advice about their business concepts.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit – University of Queensland Visit

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit from University of Queensland (UQ) came to visit our senior indigenous students to talk about University life last week. They discussed the benefits of living on campus, camps for secondary students, becoming involved with the social, cultural and community aspects at UQ as well as the academia side of University study. These students enjoyed the visit asking lots of questions and broadening their knowledge of the opportunities available for their future. We would like to thank these visitors from UQ for their time.

Senior Gala Day

Senior Gala Day last week was a great success with exciting results for Corinda. We are immensely proud of our Open Boys Basketball and Open Boys Volleyball teams for winning the premier flag in the West Brisbane Secondary School Sports Association! An outstanding achievement.

Corinda Pancakes are back!

Our school leaders were out and about this week boosting the morale of their fellow students and cooking pancakes for a nice hot breakfast to start the day. It was our first pancake breakfast since COVID-19 restrictions were put in place so it was exciting to have the Leaders bringing back one of the students’ favourite morning rituals!

Cyber Safety Update

Parents and Carers, please keep an eye on the websites your students are accessing on their electronic devices. We have had reports that students are accessing unsafe websites (in particular, Omegle), putting themselves at risk.

We strongly encourage the use of FamilyZone at home, which allows parents to manage internet settings to keep children safe and responsible whilst online.
