Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends
This week our Year 11 School Captain applicants conducted their speeches with their cohort. Their speeches were then uploaded to our Teams site for the year 10 students to watch. I would like to congratulate all five of our candidates and compliment them on their courage and enthusiasm. All five candidates are worthy applicants and have so much to offer our school. Following their speeches they have attended an interview with Caitlin Brown, Andrew Noble and myself. We have thoroughly enjoyed interacting with these students and listening to their goals and aspirations as future leaders of our school. In the coming weeks all leadership candidates will be participating in an Experiential Leadership workshop where their behaviours and leadership initiative will be observed by an outside facilitator. Staff and students are currently undertaking their voting. We wish all five candidate the very best of luck throughout the process.
This week our Hospitality students put their practical skills to work when we hosted our local Primary Administrative teams to a breakfast. Our students were very impressive and are to be congratulated on the standard of presentation and service they provided. Our primary colleagues were very impressed. This was a great opportunity to share with our primary schools how we assess our students in year 7 and build their capacity to perform for their ATAR completion. The impact of our Language programs was a major discussion and we hope to work closely with our local primary schools to value add with Language programs in order to encourage students to continue with their language studies throughout high school. These programs are providing very positive results for the new ATAR and we will be monitoring this closely, ensuring we provide every opportunity for students to maximise their results in senior.

Some of our best
SPL Junior Boys Soccer
Over the course of the year our Football teams have been competing against other Football Excellence schools in the Queensland Schools Premier League (SPL). This competition sees over 12 established State High school Football programs compete to determine a winner in four different age categories. The competition is always fierce with every school being level in terms of ability, skill and determination.
For Corinda, this is only our second year in the competition and already we have come such a long way in a short period of time. After this year’s round robin competition our Junior Boys team were successful in qualifying for a semi-final after achieving a great set of results. In their first game they played Marsden State High School and won 4 – 1. In their Second game they had to play against Chancellor State College in a very tough match. The boys all played extremely well and came away with the win 2-1. Special mention to Fletcher Doyle to stepping in as goal keeper on the day after our original keeper had to miss out due to injury. Another special mention goes to Matthew Andrew for being team manager on the day as well having missed both games due to injury.
In the Semi-Final they came up against competition favourites Kelvin Grove State College. The game was extremely tough with Kelvin Grove’s side boasting some of the best talent QLD has to offer for Football. Whilst Corinda put up a great fight they could not hold out against the attacking force of Kelvin Grove losing 8 – 1. One special note is that Corinda is the only side to play Kelvin Grove and score a goal against them this year! Special mention to Liam Donoghue who stepped in to Midfield for the team and did an outstanding job, also helping set up Corinda’s goal on the day.
Well done to our junior boys for making the Semi-final, it’s an achievement in itself to be there with this level of competition. Our program and our school a very proud of you!
South East Queensland School Futsal titles
On Monday our school Futsal teams competed at the South East Queensland Futsal Secondary Finals Day. This day see’s the best teams from their respective pools playoff against each other in a knockout finals series to see who has the best team in South East Queensland.
Corinda had 9 teams qualify for the day. The teams all performed outstandingly with many teams progressing through the initial elimination rounds but eventually conceding defeat later in the competition.
Special mention to our 13 years boys and 14 years girls teams who were successful in qualifying for the Semi-final but both narrowly lost in tough games against two separate Futsal schools of excellence. Well done to these teams as they will now progress to the QLD titles in Term 4!
Lastly a special mention to our 13 years Girls side who successfully made their way to the Grand Final. They came up against Assisi Catholic College who are known as an excellence school in Futsal. They battled hard and represented Corinda beautifully but unfortunately were the runners up on the day conceding 5 -3. Well done to our 13 years girls for finishing 2nd in South East Queensland – big results for our girls program!
We now look to prepare for the QLD State titles in Term 4 with all our teams already preparing for their next competition!
Met West Finals at Corinda
On Wednesday, Corinda hosted the Metropolitan West Netball and Football Finals right here at school. It was an outstanding day of sporting activity and excitement.
Three of our four competing netball teams won their games and will progress through to the next round of Finals. Special mention to our opens who competed in a nail biting game winning by one point against Redlands. Also, huge congratulations to our year 10 team who beat Wellington Point 27 – 9 in a great show of skill (picture below.)
Our footballers also represented the school impressively with three teams progressing through to the next round of Finals. Special mention to the Year 7 Boys team who beat Cleveland 4 – 0!

The Graduation Ball date is scheduled for Wednesday 18th November. Students will have a half day on Wednesday, leaving time for preparation for the formal during the second half of the day. Further information regarding the start time will be released once event details are finalised.
2021 Year 7 Parent Information Evening

River City Labs Partnership
Corinda State High School is proud to announce our newest partnership with River City Labs, an Innovation Hub located in Brisbane’s CBD and run by The Australian Computer Society. River City Labs is focused on driving innovation by providing resources to empower, support and connect tech entrepreneurs, startup and scaleup businesses.
We hope to work alongside River City Labs by helping them facilitate a diverse range of programs, events and engagement opportunities through our community of young entrepreneurs. We hope to tap into their valuable team of alumni, mentors and their global network to elevate the opportunities available to Corinda students.
This semester, River City Labs will be supporting our Year 10 Future Enterprise Studies classes as they prepare to enter their social enterprise concepts to a number of competitions, including the Future Anything State Competition, the National Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition and the Westpac Youth Challenge Competition. Our students are lucky enough to have access to the mentors at River City Labs, where they can pose questions and seek advice to refine their business plans.
River City Labs will also be joining our panel of sharks at our Annual Corinda Shark Tank Competition that takes place in Term 4. Students will present their Enterprise or Innovative Technology concepts to a panel of industry experts, with the best pitch taking home a trophy.
Other exciting initiatives on the table for 2021 include a state-wide Hackathon and a Business Bootcamp held at Corinda’s new Innovation Learning Centre. Innovation and enterprise is taking on a new meaning at Corinda and we cannot wait to see how this partnership develops.
Science Honours Excursion
Last Tuesday Dr Davis and the Year 10 Science Honours Class travelled to The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute to participate in the SPARQ-Ed DNA restriction and Gel Electrophoresis Experience. This excursion is part of our enrichment activities for the Science Excellence classes and is designed to encourage higher order thinking in Science.
The aim of this activity is to perform a restriction digest on a plasmid containing an inserted gene. Students will learn to run the resulting digest on an agarose gel and use the results to determine whether the gene had been insert correctly or incorrectly. This is part of the broader “DNA & Genetics” unit covered this year.
The experience was enjoyed by all.

Spark Their Future
To support parents and carers of young people, the department has released the evidence-based Spark their Future website. This website provides engaging, non-confronting information and support to help parents keep their child engaged with learning and education pathways.
Articles have been developed through extensive research and in collaboration with subject matter experts, including guidance officers and behaviour experts, and other agencies, such as the Queensland Family and Child Commission and the non-state schooling sectors, to develop joint articles featuring education and youth policy leaders.
Articles are targeted at parents of teenagers, when disengagement is most prominent.

Cyber Safety Presentation at Corinda
This week our year 7 students had the benefit of attending an hour-long presentation on Internet Safety. Brett Lee, from Internet Safe Education, drew upon 22 years of experience with the Queensland Police Force, including 16 years in the field of Child Exploitation, to present information regarding cyberbullying, the dangers of strangers behind the screen, the legal ramifications associated with negative online behaviours and strategies to remain safe online. Students were highly engaged, prompting students to reflect individually on their own experiences, particularly regarding social media.

At Corinda State High School, students are able to access support from a range of people including House Masters, Guidance Officers, School Nurse and our Youth Support Coordinator. For those who wish to support students at home, you may find at the link below and Second link below useful tools to complement the presentation and support discussions.
