Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Friends,

Our students have settled into their new routines and the split timetable is providing plenty of opportunity for students to utilise outdoor spaces at lunch time. Lateness to school has been an issue as we have noticed more students being dropped off by car since our return. We understand traffic is a problem for families at the moment and are trying to minimise impact of lateness by moving students to class without delays as they arrive.

It is great to see an increase in the number of students riding bicycles to school since we returned. The bike racks have now been moved due to the construction and we have provided additional storage for student bikes. They are now located just inside the gate near the Arts building.

Our year 12 students celebrated their 100 day countdown last week and it was great to see them thinking positively about the end of the year. It has been difficult for our Seniors as they navigate their ATAR and the uncertainty around their end of year celebrations. I remain optimistic that restrictions will be lifted by then and that our Seniors can experience the much anticipated celebrations that year 12s look forward to each year. I will endeavour to communicate information as it becomes available.

Students are in the middle of end of term assessment right now. We want to reassure parents that this assessment will not be reported on in isolation. These are very unique circumstances and it is important that we also look at assessment prior to Learning@Home. A special comment will be placed on the report card for future reference to identify that students results may be affected by COVID-19. However, we will be looking at student achievement to inform us of any gaps for future lesson planning. This will be important for teachers so that they can ensure students are able to progress and move forward with their learning. We also understand that some students may find assessment challenging and overwhelming and if this is the case please make sure you contact us so that we can put adjustments in place. If you have any concerns or questions about this please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Corinda was recently recognised by Channel 10 for our Agriculture students’ collaboration with QUT in researching the local distribution of flowering grass species. The research began during Learning@Home and has continued since students returned to school. We are very proud of Agriculture teacher Chris Butcher and the 60 students involved in contributing to this innovative research. You can watch the news story on our Facebook page or read about it on the QUT website.

I hope you are all staying healthy and that the return to school has not been too difficult. We are all looking forward to the end of term and pressing the reset button for term 3 with a fresh start. Term 2 has certainly presented many challenges for us all.

Catching Buses in the Morning

Please be aware that students are required to ‘Hail’ buses they wish to board. To ‘Hail’ the bus, students should stand clearly visible next to the bus stop sign, extend their arm upwards as if to make a stop gesture while looking directly at the bus. Keep arm extended until the bus indicates to pull into the stop. Move back from the edge of the road for safety and wait until the bus has completely stopped before boarding. Many bus stops are serviced by multiple bus routes and drivers will assume students are waiting for a different bus unless they physically ‘Hail’ the bus.

Year 10 SET Planning Process

This term the year 10s have been engaging in our SET Planning process. They took a careers quiz, explored the Australian Industries and, more specifically, the careers in these industries, found out about subjects offered at Corinda State High School via the Subject Selection Handbook and HOD videos and they participated in a Virtual Careers expo.

Next week the students will complete their OneSchool profile and receive a subject selection survey link – all in preparation for their SET Planning meeting. The SET Planning meeting provides an opportunity for parents and students to meet face-to-face with a staff member from to discuss subject selections for years 11 and 12.

The SET Planning meetings will occur in week 2 of term 3. You will be able to book your SET Planning interview in the same format as Parent/Teacher Interviews, through the SOBs process. It is a requirement that all Year 10 students are accompanied by their Parent/Carer for the meeting.

Lockdown restrictions are slowly being lifted across Australia, but things have not returned to the old ‘normal’ yet and possibly never will — more time online is likely to continue to be part of life.

eSafety has put together some advice to make sure students look after their online safety and wellbeing:

  • Stay connected with friends.
  • Manage mental health in and out of COVID lockdown.
  • Know how to deal with cyberbullying.
  • Don’t fall for fake news.
  • Balance time online.
  • Be cautious about online relationships.
