Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends
A big week for Corinda last week. Our Annual Investiture Ceremony was conducted last Thursday where we presented our newly elected student leaders for 2020. Our theme this year, ‘The Superhero in You”, gave us the perfect opportunity to celebrate our Corinda superheroes. We were joined by local MP Jessica Pugh and our special guest Ben Kehoe. We also presented our Scholars medals and certificates to our OP 1 – 5 Seniors from 2019. Dux of the School Nghi Le Pham then gave an inspiring speech to our students about her year 12 journey. It was wonderful to have our graduates join us for this ceremony and for our students to acknowledge their academic success.
Congratulations to our newly elected leaders for 2020. I look forward to watching them grow throughout their leadership journey as they unleash their superpowers. I would especially like to welcome our new School Captains – Hannah and Mariana to their newly elected roles. Their address at the ceremony was commendable.
Lions Youth of the Year
Congratulations to Hannah Hall-Young who last weekend won the Lions Youth of the Year district competition. An impressive win against some tough competition. We wish Hannah all the very best in the zone finals.
Allwell Testing
Each year we undertake diagnostic testing with our year 7 and 10 students. This is important information that we use to support our students in their academic studies. For year 7 it is used to fully understand each learner and how we can tailor literacy and numeracy intervention. Teachers also use the results to identify individual strategies in their classrooms and support staff use the testing to identify student needs with learning support and enhancement. Parents will receive a comprehensive report of their student highlighting strengths and weaknesses, reading levels and recommended reading lists to help improve student reading. The Allwell test is more than just a literacy and numeracy test; it identifies specific skillsets that are important for all learning in secondary. Parents are encouraged to take the time to read this report and if you would like to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact the school and make an appointment. We welcome your engagement with this information.
Our year 10 students were tested this week and this provides us with valuable information around capability for their senior subjects and pathway selections. We use this as part of the SET Planning process and discuss this in depth with the student and parents at this meeting. This has been very successful in ensuring we set our students up for success in the senior secondary years with the new QCE and ATAR.
Corinda is one of the very few schools that uses this testing as a valuable tool for supporting student learning. It is an investment in our students that we believe is important for every student. Parents are able to receive detailed information on where their student is on the continuum and more importantly where we can take them from this point.
Open Day 2020
Our Open Day is fast approaching and it is always a fantastic day for showcasing our amazing talent and outstanding programs. This year will be extra special as we also celebrate 60 years as a high school. We plan to have decades set up so that past students can gather and reconnect. If you know of any past students out there please encourage them to come along and join in the celebrations. More details will be made available closer to the day.
Novel Coronavirus
Our school is regularly provided with updates on Coronavirus and we continue to encourage students to ensure they practice good hygiene while at school. If your child has any flu symptoms please ensure they remain at home and are closely monitored. While this may not mean they have the virus, it is a simple precaution that prevents panic and unrest across the school. It is important that we maintain a calm environment for our students so that they are not distracted from their learning. As news of the virus continues to unfold we understand that students may feel anxious and we want to ensure that we are not escalating this anxiety.
The updated advice in relation to the Coronavirus now includes travel from Iran. Students cannot attend school if they have:
- left, or transited through mainland China in the last 14 days (must isolate for 14 days after leaving mainland China);
- left, or transited through Iran on or after 1 March (must isolate until 14 days after leaving Iran);
- been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus in the last 14 days (must isolate for 14 days after the date of last contact with the confirmed case).
I do not expect that these travel restrictions will significantly impact upon any of our day-to-day school operations and I want to reassure you that we will continue to work to ensure any disruption is minimised.
We continue to take advice from Queensland Health and the Department of Education in relation to this matter. The health and well-being of our community remains our number one priority. If you have any questions or require more information, please feel free to contact the school on 3379 0222.
Thank you for your continued support with this.

Some of our best…
Corinda Football
A fantastic start to the Schools Premier League Football season with both senior teams victorious over Cleveland SHS. Our senior girls winning 6 nil in the first ever girls SPL win! The senior boys taking home a 4- 1 victory. Our junior boys and girls left it all on the field though unable to get the result.
Lions Youth of the Year
Congratulations to our two Lions Youth of the Year entrants from Saturday, Hannah and Eva. They competed through written applications, panel interview, and both impromptu and planned speeches.
Eva was outstanding in the public speaking section (ask her about cultural identity or how we should celebrate Australia Day) and Hannah was impressive across all sections and was announced the Club Winner. Congratulations and good luck to Hannah as she is off next to the zone finals.
International program
News from the International Department
We have started 2020 with 90 International students from 15 countries. Some of our students are study abroad and will be here for 3 months. Some of our graduate students have just started Year 7 and will be with us for the next 6 years. Many of our students are staying with dedicated homestay families, we would like to take this opportunity to thank those families.
New students have already had an excursion to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. This excursion gave the students an opportunity to meet Australian wildlife and take a few selfies with our iconic koalas and kangaroos. Students have also had an opportunity to complete their water skills certificate, all who participated passed. Our International students bring cultural diversity to our classrooms and perspectives from their home countries on a variety of issues and share this with their classmates. We are pleased to have such a large cohort of students with us and we warmly welcome all International students to Corinda. We are looking forward to watching their progress.
