Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends,
Welcome to the 2020 school year and a very warm welcome to our new Corinda families. The first week of Term 1 is always such a special time for our staff and students with friends reuniting and new friendships being formed. Our school is once again filled with happy and optimistic staff and students and it is energising to be back with everyone at Corinda.
The year 2020 is going to be a big year for Corinda as we celebrate our 60th anniversary, and embark on some major building projects across the school. With enrolments at full capacity we are navigating classroom space and patiently waiting for additional classrooms to arrive.
Thank you to all Parents and carers for ensuring students are organised and prepared for their year of learning.
Merit Ceremonies
Last week we conducted our Merit Ceremonies to acknowledge students who qualified for awards for their 2019 school year. It was decided to postpone these ceremonies to the start of the year, so that we could formally acknowledge our students without end of year distractions and absences. A full list of award recipients is attached to this newsletter. Congratulations to all students who received awards.
Air Conditioning Initiative
Unfortunately the Air Conditioning has not yet been completed due to a hold up with supply of air conditioners. They are due to be delivered next week and we will begin installation in the coming weeks. We look forward to this project finally being complete and for our students to be able to learn in comfortable classrooms. We are very grateful to the P & C Association for their preliminary efforts and the Queensland Government for following through to enable completion.
Year 12 Outcomes 2019
Congratulations to our Seniors 2019 who made us all very proud. At the end of last year we farewelled the OP system and I am pleased to report that our students certainly produced results worth celebrating.
They achieved 1 – OP 1, 1 – OP 2, 7 OP 3s, 7 – OP 4s and 4 OP 5s. The target was set early and it was a pleasure to watch the cohort strive to do their best. Overall results were very pleasing with the following highlights:

Percentage of OP eligible students |
State Percentage of OP students |
OP 1 – 5 |
22% |
22.49% |
OP 1 – 10 |

I am pleased to report that 100% of graduating students achieved a VET qualification and 100% achieved their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE – 20 points). This has been a 10 year trend at Corinda and we are very proud of our graduating students.
New QCE
Our 2020 year 12 students have settled into their studies and we have been monitoring their performance with some estimated predictions on ATAR scores. These are very much an approximation at this stage, but we do believe that our students will perform very well under this system. We are optimistic about our year 12 performance under this new system and we will continue to work with our students on feedback and opportunities for improvement.

School Captains 2020 Address
I clearly remember my first day at Corinda, walking through black gates at the front of the school – excited, ambitious and a little anxious. As many of us begin our final year at Corinda, we embark on many adventures, whether it’s achieving academic excellence or indulging in the renowned tuckshop chicken burgers. The most important aspect of being a year 12 student is being a positive role model, not only to the younger grades but to the wider community.
As school captains our mission it to foster an optimistic and cohesive team spirit for all houses, motivating others to be their very best.
This year we strive to unify the Corinda community, embrace the school values, encourage participation and be the smile that ignites the happiness.

Introducing Ebony
Corinda State High School is all about inclusive education and support for students in ways to suit their individual needs. One of our new year 7 students benefits from the support of a trained therapy dog. Similar to a guide dog, Ebony has received a great deal of training over a long period to ensure success. We have been communicating with another school that has a similar need and an assistive dog, to learn from their policies and procedures. We have also been in correspondence with Regional Support staff to develop a Risk Management plan to ensure the health and safety of all school members. Our staff have been involved in preparation meetings to ensure that we are catering for all our students’ needs. As part of this, we are seeking any information from you regarding your child, in case your child may have an allergy to dogs or have a genuine fear of dogs.
Some information about Ebony:
Ebony always wears her vest and is always on a lead.
Please DO NOT approach Ebony as she is busy working with a student.
Please DO NOT feed Ebony.
If you have any questions please feel free contact the school on 3379 0222.
News from the Farm
Our agricultural team has worked tirelessly over the holidays taking care of our animals, produce and gardens. We have recently welcomed two new calves to our farm along with day old chicks. Our farm gives students the opportunity to experience in agriculture in all stages of life.
Year 12 Breakfast
Last week we held a year 12 breakfast to welcome their return to our school community and their final year of schooling. This opportunity allowed students to connect with their teachers in a more relaxed setting, to support engagement and positive relationships. Year 12 can be a very demanding year for students and the importance of students engaging with the school community cannot be underestimated.
Ms Jamieson finished the breakfast with a visioning exercise allowing students to conceptualise their best version of themselves as a year 12 student. Students depicted a year of focus, challenges, friendships and the support they have around to help them.
We look forward to the year ahead with our year 12 students and witnessing them being the best version of themselves during their year 12 journey.
Gifted and Talented
APEX Summit Excellence Camp
Corinda recently held our annual excellence enrichment camp for new year 7 excellence students. This day is an opportunity for students to fully immerse themselves in their excellence program and see what it has to offer. We held workshops for each excellence program from Engineering, Design and Technology to Culinary.
Our Culinary students worked with Ms Strother to experience the world of hospitality and cooking in an industry standard kitchen. Our students’ first task was to make their own butter.
Students enjoyed the day and it was well-received by our new parents as an opportunity to engage their students in a new program.
Our Golden opportunity days for primary school students will be returning this year, more information will be posted closer to the date.

Corinda Bowls Club Donation
The Corinda SHS Music Department would like to acknowledge Garry Wallace from the Corinda Bowls Club for his kind donation of an electric guitar and amplifier. This instrument will be a valued addition to the program and will ensure that more children will discover the joy of making music. We appreciate your donation and look forward to playing it within the Corinda Community.

School Traffic Management
We’re increasing safety around our school
Brisbane City Council has supported our school to develop a tailored traffic management plan (TMP) to help ease traffic congestion and increase safety around our school and the local community.
Our TMP focuses on creating a more efficient pick-up and drop-off zone, increasing active travel opportunities and ensuring our school zone operates safely.
As a valued member of our community, we need your assistance to ensure safer school streets for our students and families. Please remember to always drive with care, observe time limits in the drop and go zone and only cross the road at signalised intersections, pedestrian refuges, school and zebra crossings or when safe and legal to do so.
To find out more, talk to the school leadership team or visit brisbane.qld.gov.au and search ‘school traffic management plans’.
