Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends,
With only a few days left of the school year, it is time to reflect on the year gone by. It never ceases to amaze me how much we manage to fit into our school year. Our students should feel very proud of their achievements. We have had a number of celebrations over the past weeks and our students have excelled on every front. Last week we had a wonderful Year 11 Social evening and our soon to be year 12 students presented themselves admirably. It was great to see them enjoying themselves after such a high pressure year with the new QCE.
This week we conducted Orientation Day for our new year 7 students. Our senior students returned to assist with the program and have already started their leadership duties. A very successful and enjoyable day for our new students.
We are eagerly awaiting our year 12 OP results which will be available this Saturday. I am sure our 2019 Seniors are just as anxious to see their results and start planning their next steps.
Merit Ceremonies
Due to student absences, we have decided to hold over our Merit Ceremonies to the beginning of the school year when all students are in attendance and fully focused. Students will be presented with Merit Awards, Music and Arts awards and Attendance awards and recipients will be published in the newsletter next year.
We want to ensure that the students receiving these awards are granted recognition for their efforts in the presence of their peers, as they so deserve.
Air Conditioning
We are pleased to report that the State Government has selected our school to receive funding for air conditioning. They plan to have this completed for the start of the school year in 2020. We are very grateful for this funding. This will complete our school project that we have been working towards. Our students will no doubt benefit from this and hopefully it will enhance their learning conditions.
As the year draws to a close I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your ongoing support of our students, our staff and our school. Thank you for another very successful year and I look forward to doing it all again in 2020. I feel very honoured and privileged to work in such a wonderful school and Corinda students are just amazing. I do hope your teenagers are kind and helpful over the break. I will be doing my bit for the drought and heading to Quilpie for a bush Christmas this year. It will be quite a trip and an interesting experience for my family! Wishing you all a very safe and enjoyable Christmas.
Best Wishes
Helen Jamieson

Some of our best…
Enterprise and Innovation at Corinda SHS
This term our year 10 Business Studies classes and the Year 10 Digital Technologies class participated in our first Shark Tank Competition. This was an opportunity for students to showcase some of the creative, innovative and eye-opening learning that takes place without our classroom walls.
Our top three marketing pitches from the Year 10 Business Studies classes presented to the Sharks, as well as our top two technical proposals from the Year 10 Digital Technologies class. We also had an open display for special guests to interact with that gave the audience a glimpse at the hard work that our students have put into their concepts.
Our sharks for the event included Mrs Jamieson, Ms Cullen, Ms Probst, Dr Dawson and Ms Ashlee Carrigan. Ashlee is the founder of Life After School which offers tailored workshops for high schools, equipping students with crucial 21st century knowledge and transferrable skills to confidently approach the real world beyond school.
Our first category for the competition was the Marketing Pitch. Students in Year 10 Business Studies have been developing their business concept for the past few months. They started off by researching their target market and conducting market research on their pain points and possible solutions. From here, students devised a suitable solution and tested its viability by developing a website with a launch page. This tested the number of real customers who engaged with their product concept and calculated the conversion rate from the main page to the purchase page. This process provided us with real-life data that we could use to refine and test our target market interest. The winner of this category was Sana Sameer and Maranda Burns for the business concept, DEA Beauty!
Our second category was the Technical Proposal. Students in Year 10 Digital Technologies have been tasked with the challenge to design a robot that solves a real-world problem at Corinda State High School. Students were encouraged to engage with teachers, staff and students to find where there was an opportunity to automate a task. Once their concept was designed, students were required to build a prototype using any of the technology available at the school. The winners of this category were Tony Do and Thien Nguyen with their Compost Tumbler 2000.
Finally, we presented our first ever BIG Idea Grant, a $2000 grant for students to start up their own business. Our winner for 2019 was Jaymi Sleight for his Sustainable Bee Hives, Corinda Honey. Corinda Honey, exists to sell locally produced, sustainable, and high quality honey and bees wax products to the community as well as creating strong partnerships with other local businesses. Corinda Honey’s vision for the future is to be a successful apiary providing community members and multiple local businesses with a variety of locally produced, sustainable, and high quality honey and bees wax products.
A big congratulations to all students. It is not easy coming up with an original idea and then pitching it to a panel of sharks. We can’t wait to see what students come up with in 2020!
Numeracy
“It’s Rocket Science” visited Corinda!
The students used mathematical equations to calculate average speed using scalars and vectors to summarise their unit on physics numeracy. Some of the rockets even reached the basketball courts from Q block! What a fantastic way to finish the year. Thanks Mrs Whitehouse!
Year 10 Volunteering
Well Done to the 200 Year 10 students engaged in Volunteering placements within the community, this week.
Here is some positive feedback from the community:
I have (7) of your students here this week from Monday to Thursday 9am-2.30pm that have had to complete (20) hours of voluntary work as part of their school studies.
I wish to commend you on what a fabulous group of students they are, they have not stopped working the whole time they have been here at Vinnies Springfield, and they have been nothing but polite, courteous and respectful to all staff, volunteers and customers.
They have gone over and above what they have put to task, and in the (8) years I have worked with St Vincent de Paul I have to say these students have been the best.
Kind regards,
Louise Moore

SPL and Football Excellence
Our Football Excellence students for 2020 will be welcoming a new partnership to the program! As Brisbane Roar Academy aligns with the Schools Premier League, it creates greater opportunity for our students to progress in their football careers. The affiliation will allow support & identification of current & potential BRFC Academy players as well as continuous professional development of SPL coaches. We are excited to see what this opportunity brings to our school and our rising football stars!
Senior Science Excursion – Heron Island
This excursion, available for all senior science students, has been running for 55 years. An amazing experience which has been described by some past students as ‘life changing’. The excursion goes for a week and students had the opportunity to witness turtles returning to the sea after a busy night of laying eggs. Then continued thr day with mapping the algal and coral species on the southern reef flats and working on research projects. The students enjoyed completing their line transects and research projects on land and in sea and presenting them last night to their peers and teachers.
Information on the 2020 trip will be available for Yr 10 & 11 Science students in Term 2 next year.
