Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends,
This past week has been a very special week for our year 12 students as they enjoyed their celebrations to mark the completion of their secondary schooling. Last Tuesday evening they enjoyed their Graduation Ball and are to be congratulated for the way in which they presented and enjoyed being together socially for the last time as Corinda.
Our Graduation Ceremony was held at the Queensland Tennis Centre. Once again this was a very special and momentus occasion for our families and students. This is the one time when we all come together as a whole school community to congratulate our year 12s and wish them well.
Mr Bates organised some unique experiences for our students last week, including a day at Movie World and for those who were game – a 24 hour mystery tour. I am sure these experiences will form some very special memories.
We are everso proud of our Year 12 Graduates and extend our very best wishes to each and every of our Corinda Seniors 2019.
Tuckshop Finalists
Last week we were acknowledged by Radio station 97.3 FM – Bianca, Mike and Bob. Our School Tuckshop was nominated as a finalist for Brisbane’s Best Tuck Shop. We were very thrilled to have received this nomination by one of our Parents and for the recognition we received. We were selected as one of the 2 finalists and great to receive this recognition.
Strategies for Parents – Screen Time
Smart Phones, tablets, laptops and all the apps you run on them are designed to be user-friendly and addictive. That is what the tech companies want. In fact, it’s their business model; return to service. We need to take back our kids time and allow them to play with real friends in real games.
Dr Mark Williams (2019) lists some important strategies you can adopt to help your child grow up healthy and happy in the real world:
- Limit screen use to weekends only
- Limit amount of time on the screens to less than 30 minutes a day – 3.5 hours a week.
- Download a screen-time tracking app and set the time limits (time can slip away easily). This can also be used to track what your child is doing on the device.
- Download and install a good parental control software to limit the websites your child can access.
- Set up one area in your home where all devices can be stored and charged that is in plain sight of everyone. If your child is required to take a device to school then it should be placed here as soon as they arrive home.
Devices increase stress, anxiety, depression and are linked to addictive traits and suicide. Lets give our young people back their happiness, time and future.

Golden Opportunity Days
Wednesday Week 4 saw the final Golden Opportunity Days for 2019. We had a full house here with Visual Art, Tennis and Football all running programs for primary school students. Thank you to those teachers who planned programs to inspire the next generation of Corinda SHS students.
Over 2019 we have had a total of 290 students from 30 primary schools attend one of the 12 Golden Opportunity Days. It has been a pleasure to see children develop a range of new skills in an area of their interest. The focus on critical thinking and collaborative problem solving to inspire creativity is challenged through these programs. These programs also inspire students to leave their comfort zone and they are challenged to make new friends in a new environment. The interschool handball games during lunch have become a favourite as students learn to navigate new friendships.
A recent parent survey conducted demonstrates the value that Golden Opportunity Days hold for primary school students with 100% of parents stating that they would recommend the programs to other parents.
“My son was having major stress about coming to Corinda next year as it is not our local so there are not many kids going there that he knows. This program has helped him with the idea of transitioning and he enjoyed spending a day with kids he didnt know and finding out how easy it was to make friends. He enjoyed the program content too but the side effect has been great.”
“These days were a great way for our child to meet some teachers and potential students and become familiar with the school, which will definitely make the transition to grade 7 next year much smoother.”
“Brilliant program and an excellent extension opportunity for children from local schools. I am very grateful that my children have had a chance to experience the various programs on offer and gain experience in fields that otherwise they would not have. They come home after each program thrilled and excited and keen to share their experience and new found knowledge with family and friends.”
We are looking forward to bringing another wide range of Golden Opportunity Day programs to our local primary schools in 2020.
STEM HORIZONS Year 7 program
Congratulations to three of our year 7 Maths Science Excellence students, Jackson Ryan, Eshan Shameer and Jaymie Sleight for being invited to attend the Year 7 STEM HORIZONS program over the last 2 terms. The boys have spent 4 days attending STEM program with students from 9 other high schools across the state. They travelled to the Manly Boat Harbour, Newmarket State School, the Griffith University EcoCentre and the Princess Alexandra Hospital and represented Corinda proudly. Congratulations to these students.
The Arts
Year 10 Drama
Congratulations to the Year 10 Drama class on a fantastic end of year production last night. The audience was very impressed by your interpretation of the text 'Hoods'. Great work team!
Dance
Over the last school holidays, two of our Year 11 Dance students; Charlotte Broad and Ashlee Berndt attended the Australian Dance Festival in Sydney. They attended workshops by Michael Dameski, Cat Santos, Stephen Tannos, Sarah Boulter, Taneikah Westcombe, Yvette Lee and Marko Panzic. They also attended a Matt Lee workshop with Samantha Jade in attendance. They did about 10 workshops each over the 3 days and saw many great performances. Alongside them, alumni dance student Abbey Mackie attended with them. Charlotte and Abbey did some auditions as well. It is great to see our Dance students branching out across the country and having access to such world class choreographers and bringing back their experiences to share with their peers. Keep up the hard work ladies!

“It will be a few weeks before we are fully functional again, but in the meantime, Rach and the team are always here to help with anything we can!”
