Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Friends,

As term 3 draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our students on yet another very successful term. I am sure they are all ready for a well-deserved rest.

By now parents of year 7 and 9 students should have received individual NAPLAN results. I encourage you all to look closely at this report and compare it to your student’s previous NAPLAN report. The most important factor with NAPLAN is to measure whether students are making individual gains in literacy and numeracy. If you need any assistance in doing this please do not hesitate to contact the school to discuss this further. Our staff will be only too happy to unpack this information with you and provide you with further explanation.

Overall, Corinda performed well in both Reading and Numeracy in years 7 and 9, ranking at or above State and National means. These have been our main areas of focus for the past few years and we are now rolling out our Writing initiatives with Write That Essay. Our writing is where our work needs to continue and, as we have only just begun our writing agenda, we did not expect to see any gains from this just yet. Year 7 have been working very hard this year with Write That Essay and we believe their year 9 data will be the first set of measurable data for writing improvements.

Our staff will be unpacking the NAPLAN data and connecting with their level of achievement data to measure individual student performance in their subjects. This is an important priority for our staff to ensure that students are performing at their expected levels.

YONDR & Family Zone

Our plans for implementation of YONDR and Family Zone next term are being rolled out in week 1. During week 1 we will be conducting special lessons with the students which will be provided by YONDR staff. I am confident that the YONDR staff will connect with our students and explain the background and the ‘why’ to students as well as explain the processes we will have in place. Full implementation of pouches will begin following the introductory lessons – which will be week 2.

This week Dan Gillespie and I met with a representative from Family Zone. I will be trialling this program myself at home to assess its effectiveness in the home environment. Family Zone encourages all parents to take up the free one month trial on offer on their website. I was very impressed with the functions of this program and how it allows parents and school to tailor filtering according to age appropriateness. We will be trialling this with a small group of students during term 4 in preparation for full implementation in 2020. This is a very powerful strategy for parents and I sincerely believe it will have a positive impact on our teenagers and address the issue of screen addiction.

I do hope you all have an enjoyable and relaxing spring break.

Helen Jamieson

Some of our best…

Corinda Family Farm Day

Recently our school Agriculture team hosted Family Farm Day. This day is an opportunity for our students and staff to showcase our unique agriculture farm to our surrounding community. This day is a chance for future students to see the hands on learning experiences at our school. This day allows our agriculture students to put their knowledge to the test and they interact with visitors and connect with the animals. We recently had four new kid arrivals from one of our goats and this gives our students the chance to learn about the animals from their first day.

Corinda Alumni Association

Recently, the Corinda Alumni Association hosted their very first meeting. It was a great morning and we look forward to future events. This meeting was a chance for us to elect a president, secretary and events co-coordinator.

To be invited to alumni events and keep up to date with the association, register as a member online.

Youth Anti-Cyber Bullying Event

In response to recommendations from the Queensland Anti-Cyberbullying Taskforce report, the Palaszczuk Government will be holding a youth anti-cyberbullying event – CONVO2019 – at the Queensland State Netball Centre on 21 October 2019, and applications are now open for young people to co-design an anti-cyberbullying campaign.
