Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends,
A warm welcome back to term 3. It was great to see our students start the term in a positive way and enjoy the house activities that were organised to regroup them and welcome them back to a new Semester. There was a lot of laughter and enjoyment observed as the students engaged in their House activities on their return to school and it was great to watch.
It was great to see parents and students take up the opportunity to attend Parent Teacher Interviews this week, seeking out feedback and discussing their learning progress. This is a really important strategy for students and parents working together with the teacher to maximise learning outcomes. If you were unable to attend and would like to meet with teachers, please do not hesitate to contact the school at any time and arrange to meet at a time that is suitable to your family circumstances.
Antipodeans Expedition – Vietnam 2020
Our current year 9 and 10 students have the opportunity to participate in an Antipodeans Expedition at the end of 2020. The Antipodeans’ Expedition program has been successfully running for over 27 years and is developed around the ethos of mindfulness, resilience and leadership. This expedition challenges young adults to uncover their unique identity and become ambassadors of the world – all while having fun along the way.
A special presentation was given to our students last week and a parent evening was held on Tuesday. There is a lot of interest in the program and we are hopeful that we will have several teams of students participating. Students are broken up into teams of approximately 16 students, with two Teachers from Corinda and an Antipodean Group Leader. Students will undertake a hands-on community project as part of their expedition, and will also explore the country on an adventurous trek.
If you for any reason missed this information and would like more details, please contact the administration and we can provide you with the materials and the key contact at Antipodeans for further discussion and clarification of any questions you may have.
I believe this is a wonderful and life-changing opportunity for our students. A payment plan has been offered to parents to assist with the cost of the expedition.
School Review
In the last week of term 2, our school was reviewed by the Education Department’s School Improvement Unit. Every school in Queensland is reviewed by the unit at least once every four years, usually in line with their 4 year strategic plan cycle. The findings from the review are used to develop clear actions and strategies to move our school forward during the 4 year cycle. Feedback from Parents/Caregivers, partner organisations, feeder schools, staff, and students played a major role in the review. Thank you to all who took the time to speak with reviewers and provided feedback. We received very positive feedback from the 4 Reviewers who spent 4 days immersed in our school. However the main objective of the review is to make recommendations for improvement and these will form part of our Strategic Planning processes in the coming weeks.
We are still waiting for a written report of the recommendations and findings and an executive summary will be posted on the website once this is made available. A full report will also be tabled at the P & C meeting and School Council.
We are now entering into our consultation phase for our new Strategic Plan. A letter will be distributed to all parents in the coming week inviting you to be a part of this consultation with our facilitator Grant O’Hara from Strategy 1st. I encourage you all to take up this opportunity to contribute to the direction of our school to ensure we are responsive to the needs of our school community. The date for the Parent Forum is Monday 12 August, 5:30pm and will run for two hours.
Looking forward to another very positive and rewarding term 3.

Gifted and Talented
Many of our Excellence Students have taken up enrichment and extension opportunities last term and we are proud to celebrate their achievements.
BRAINways EDUCATION in conjunction with the University of Southern Queensland held a series of workshops over the Easter holidays to stretch and expand the knowledge of highly capable students in the areas of Maths, Science and Humanities. We had many students attend multiple workshops including the Mathematical Beauty of Randomness and The Butterfly Effect: A World in Chaos.
Three of our high performing Year 9 students were also accepted to attend STEM HORIZONS in conjunction with Griffith University and SPARQ-ed. This four day hands on program for high achieving students is designed to provide opportunities for students to actively engage in higher order thinking and problem solving with links to authentic “real world” science. Our selected Year 7 students are due to complete STEM HORIZONS later in the year.
The Queensland Virtual STEM Academy Grand Challenge- Pharmacology Futures is being tackled by two high performing Maths Science Excellence Students from Grade 9. These students are finding solutions to feed the world and have designed and are maintaining an aquaponics system at the farm. Part of this program is attending two online classes a week on top of their normal curriculum. The students will present a proposal for the “farm of the future” to a panel of experts from the University of Queensland later in the year.

The Smith Family – Financial Support for School Families
With increasing financial pressure on families, the Smith Family Saver Plus Program has proven to be a great way to help by providing $500 towards school costs as well as offering budgeting education and support.
The aim of the program is for participants to achieve a savings goal of $500, which is then matched by a further $500 per family which must be spent on education expenses.
Saver Plus is funded by the Federal Government and is delivered by community organisations across Australia.
Over 40,000 families have received $500 in matched savings to assist with costs such as:
- School Uniforms and shoes
- Text Books and Stationary needs
- School Camps and excursions
- Sporting, Art, Dance or Music fees
- Laptops or tablets
