Executive Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Friends,

It’s hard to believe we are at the end of term 2. It has been a very busy term for our students with a lot of events and additional activities that have impacted on classroom time. Students are ready for a well-earned break.

Despite the cool temperatures we endured last Friday evening, it was great to see the junior school students come along and enjoy their movie evening on the oval. What a great venue for a movie. Special thanks to our staff who gave up their Friday evening to support this event and provide food. It was a lovely evening for all.

This week we have had some special visitors to our school. All schools are required to undergo a formal school review as part of their improvement processes, and to review our strategic plan in preparation for the development of our new four year plan. We will be spending next term developing our new plan and parents, staff and students will be invited to workshops to be a part of this visioning process.

Regional Showcase Winners

Last week we attended the Regional Showcase for Excellence Awards and I am pleased to share that Corinda State High School was awarded the Showcase Award for Excellence in the Secondary Years. We are very proud of this achievement as it is a result of years of hard work and an unrelenting focus on improving student outcomes in Literacy, Numeracy, individual student growth and the year 12 OP and QCS outcomes. We were also recognised for our inclusive culture, improved senior schooling outcomes, significant NAPLAN gains and ongoing quality improvements in teaching and learning. We now go onto the judging for State Finalist awards which are announced at the end of July. I feel very proud to be a part of this amazing school and everything we stand for. We will continue striving to Exceed Your Expectations!

I hope our students enjoy a well-earned and restful break and look forward to an exciting term 3. Thank you for your ongoing support in ensuring our students are prepared for learning and upholding our school expectations.

Culinary Golden Opportunity Day

It was great to have 20 of our future foodies here during week 7 for the Culinary Golden Opportunity Day. The students didn’t stop all day and enjoyed sampling their hard work including; topped pancakes, pizzas and choc chip cookies. A highlight for the students was kneading and rolling out the pizza dough. A big thank you to Miss Miller, Chef Strother and the Certificate III Year 12 Hospitality students who assisted the primary students throughout the day. This Golden Opportunity day was a great introduction to our innovative new Culinary Excellence Program which is commencing in 2020.

If you wish to register your primary school student for an upcoming Golden Opportunity Day please download the Skoolbag app and locate Corinda SHS. All the information including how to register can be found on the app.

Queensland Virtual STEM Academy

This term, two of our year 9 students are participating in the Queensland Virtual Stem Academy’s (QVSA) Grand Challenge – Pharmacology Futures. For 10 weeks, Arpa and Anjolina will explore the future of agriculture from multiple stakeholder perspectives and combine their knowledge in a proposal for ‘the farm of the future,’ presented to a panel of experts from the University of Queensland. They attend classes online twice a week and have already set up an aquaponics system at the farm. Well done to these students! We look forward to seeing their proposals next term.

BRAINways Education Holiday programs

Over the break many of our high performing year 7, 8 and 9 students attended the BRAINways Education Academicus workshops, in conjunction with USQ,. The students were nominated to attend a series of workshops including The Mathematical Beauty of Randomness, the Butterfly Effect: A World in Chaos, Critical Mass: Designing Spaces for an Overpopulated World and Chaos and Order: Keys to Creativity. Congratulations students! Certificates will be presented at the next Junior assembly.

Some of our best…

Tahnaya Noonan

Tahnaya Noonan, year 7, has had a stellar 2019 for her dance achievements and performances. She began dancing at just 2 & ½ years old and she has since performed in countless competitions, eisteddfods and programs. This year she completed her first major audition, in which she was successful and accepted into the Merge Dance Theatre Intermediate program for 2019. Merge Dance Theatre is a youth contemporary company which aims to bridge the gap between dance school and the professional industry. For the first time Tahnaya is able to join her love of dance and school as she is now a student of the Corinda High Dance Excellence Program and a member of the Junior and Tap troupe. The Dance Excellence Program allows Tahnaya to study Dance as part of her PE studies as well as her Arts studies.

Tahnaya's dream is to be a professional dancer and ultimately have it take her around the world. She would love to dance and travel with a cruise line before one day teaching or maybe even owning her own dance studio.

We wish Tahnaya the best of luck in her dance studies and dreams and will continue to support her long after her Corinda journey!

Corinda State High School is hosting a Write that Essay Parent information Session 6th August 2019. This evening will provide further information about the course and explain the benefits of participating.

Corinda Partnership with Auki Community Secondary School

An international partnership has been recently forged between Auki Community Secondary School (Solomon Islands) and Corinda State High School.

Timmy Afia (principal ACSS) and Richard Jack (Head of INTAD, CSHS) attended an Asia Pacific BRIDGE school partnership conference where they collaborated on a potential partnership between the two schools. Timmy then completed a homestay for the next week, observing the Corinda Way as well as visiting sites in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. He took many notes and ideas back to his school.

Different departments opened their doors to Timmy as well as donating surplus microscopes, playing jerseys and hand tools to his school. These will be sent the end of the term.

Richard Jack will be visiting Auki Community Secondary School by the end of the year to continue the partnership.

In 2020, Corinda SHS will be taking a group of senior students in the areas of Construction and Technology, to visit Auki CSS and work alongside their students. Our students will be sharing their knowledge to other teachers and staff. One of the biggest issues faced by Auki staff is a lack of foundation tools required to teach 21st century technology to students. Equipping both teachers and selected students with these tools will encourage technologically literate futures.

In semester 2 2020, students from Auki CSS will homestay with our students and observe the Corinda Way. This partnership will gain momentum over the years and a range of subject areas will be invited to visit.

For the rest of this year, we will be collaborating on science practices and meet and greets to breaking down cultural barriers as well as other teaching and learning adventures.

We are looking forward to great possibilities in the near future.
