Executive Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends,
Our year 10 students have been heavily immersed in their SET Planning with Ms Hixon over the past two weeks. I would like to acknowledge and thank all parents who have rearranged their work schedules and busy lives to come in for these very important interviews. There is so much information to take in and our students have approached this process in a very mature way. A big thank you to Ms Hixon for all the hours she has put in with parents to ensure our students are on the most suited pathways for years 11 and 12.
Our year 12 students will be spending term 3 exploring QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Options) with our Guidance team; another significant milestone they will be preparing for. Once again – as with SET Planning - students need to be realistic and ensure they have several options in place to secure an offer. I encourage parents to become involved in this process with your students to ensure they have suitable options nominated in accordance with their predictions from Academic Coaching.
Corinda State High School Alumni Association
This year our School Captains are aiming to formally launch the Corinda State High School Alumni Association. We are in the process of adding this tab to our school website and would love to have all past students, staff and community members to complete the application form and register with us as soon as it is available. We plan to have functions each year to bring back past students and connect. We would also like to encourage past students to come back and share their stories and inspire our students to be active in our school community.
I am very excited by this project and I am looking forward to reconnecting with many more past students hearing of their success. I have already heard of a recent wedding of two of our past students who met here at school and one recent engagement. Would love to share these wonderful stories! Once a student….always a valued member of our Corinda community.

School Council News
At our last school council meeting the Corinda State High School Annual Report was endorsed. This is now available on the school’s website. This is a worthwhile read and a true celebration of the school’s achievements from 2018.
The Council has been in a lot of discussions around the new building program. We will be drafting correspondence to seek clarification around funding and resource allocations to accommodate future enrolments to ensure our school is adequately and fairly resourced. This will be communicated once we have more information.

Dance Golden Opportunity Day
It was great see so many excited primary school dance students attend our recent Dance Golden Opportunity Day. A full day of dance was run by Mr Papinniemi in a range of styles including contemporary and hip hop. The students even choreographed their own pieces! A highlight was the final dance presentation for their parents and families. Thank you to all of the talented students who attended. We are very proud of the effort and commitment displayed on the day.
STEM horizons Year 9
Three of our year 9 students; Arpa Roy, Anjolina Naolu and Vi Ngo were accepted to attend the STEM Horizons program. Students participated in 4 days of specialist activities at a range of locations including the PA Hospital, University of Queensland Moreton Bay Research Station and Griffith University. Activities were hands on and provided opportunities to actively engage in higher order thinking and problem solving. Our students worked in small groups alongside peers from other schools with similar STEM interests. Congratulations again to these students on embracing this wonderful opportunity.
Arpa Ray gave us an insight into her experience at the program:
“Overall, I highly enjoyed this once in a life-time opportunity. Working and collaborating with other highly passionate, capable students; visiting locations such as St Helena Island; and conducting experiments within labs were the most significant highlights. Although the first STEM Horizons day was slightly daunting as I had not met my peers before, I do not regret signing up to this program and would definitely recommend this to the next school cohort. It taught me how to collaborate with other students, work in an entirely different environment, and understand the importance of even the smallest details, thus ultimately helping me to grow as an individual”.
Some of our best…
Past Student – Johnny Nguyen
We recently had one of our past students, Johnny Nguyen, come in to visit our school and reconnect with his teachers and mentors. It was great to see Johnny and hear of his successful life and career after Corinda. He is currently working as a Real Estate Agent at Coronis, Kelvin Grove. Johnny graduated in 2012 and went on to study a Bachelor of Digital Marketing and Advertising at QUT. He was dedicated to his work even during his study and was promoted to Assistant Manager at his workplace. He has travelled throughout South East Asia after Corinda, and loves sports and competing in just about anything. His best memory of Corinda was meeting his now fiancée, Donna.
We are working closely with Johnny who has generously agreed to host a giveaway in the coming weeks for our Corinda parents. All information is available on our Facebook page. Johnny wants to hear from parents and provide support for the new term.
Amber Benz
On Mother’s day one of our students, Amber Benz, competed in the Toowoomba eisteddfod and we wanted to congratulate her for her amazing efforts and results.
She received a highly commended award for the 15yrs up-tempo Jazz Solo with a score of 84. It was a tough field with 19 competitors, so an amazing result for Amber. She also competed in the Open Jazz Duo and placed 3rd with a score of 83.
As the first eisteddfod of the season, this an amazing result and we are so proud of her results and look forward to seeing her compete in the future!
Debating Results
Our debaters travelled to Canterbury College for round 3 of the competition last week. The results were all very close with the year 10 and 11 teams winning their debates. Jay-J Lavatai, Olivia Hollis, Selena Bui and Tahlia Briody all received best speaker awards. Congratulations to all debaters and their coaches: Simon O’Brien, Alex Griffin, Amy Heymer and Patrick Duggan. Our next debate is at home on Friday of week 2 next term.
