Executive Principals Report

Dear Parent and Friends,

What a busy few weeks we have had. Our year 7 and 9 students survived NAPLAN and were very well-prepared for the testing. All went very smoothly as students undertook the testing in their regular classrooms.

Our year 11 students are very much into assessment at present with their units of study falling into different timelines as other grades. It is important that year 11 students are focused on ensuring they are well prepared for all assessment. The QCAA has very strict rules around missed assessment that we as a school are required to adhere to. Our new Assessment Policy outlines this very clearly and this is much more rigid than previous years. I encourage parents and students to ensure they are well aware of these requirements so that they are not disadvantaged in any way. They are doing really well to date and we are proud of how they are approaching their studies.

Our students have really enjoyed hosting the Thailand Study Tour these past few weeks. This is the second year we have hosted this Study Tour. The friendships forged through this experience are a wonderful opportunity to learn about each other’s culture and establish a lifelong connection. Our Corinda students are to be congratulated for the way in which they have welcomed our guests and taken care of them while in our school.

Hard to believe we are over half way through the term. Flu season is upon us and our students are heading into a very rigorous assessment period.

Thank you to everyone involved it was a super successful day that was enjoyed by all!

The game is modified to represent the original field games played by the first Australian people. Congratulations to Kabul House for taking home the win, and Moori for being the runner’s up! It was a fantastic day filled with great teamwork, sportsmanship and excitement.

Some of our best

Micheala Williamson

Congratulations to Micheala Williamson (Year 11) who was selected to represent the QLD U/16 Girls at the National Futsal Championships. Micheala will be travelling to Sydney in January to compete. Well Done Micheala!

Cameron Dudgall and Charlie McBride

Charlie McBride and Cameron Dugdell are attending four GCRASRA regattas this term, representing CSHS. They will row together in the doubles race, and also compete in singles and quads. We wish them the best of luck for their competitions!

Mother’s Day Market

This term, our year 10 Business Studies students participated in our annual Mother’s Day Markets. During this hands-on learning experience, students are responsible for the entire operation. They are responsible for their product development, stock control, budgeting and marketing of their stall. Students work in teams to plan and deliver their products to their customers and need to consider their budget restrictions, pricing strategies, packaging choices and promotional activities.

This year our students exceeded our expectations, selling all stock within the first half hour of operation. With a combination of hard work and effective decision-making, students were able to deliver a product that appealed to their target audience. With items including hand-made bath bombs and candles, DIY garden kits, pamper packages, home-baked goodies, teddy bears and much more, it’s no surprise their stalls were such a hit.

We also invited our year 11 Business Studies students to participate as secret shoppers. Our year 11 students are learning about quality customer service this term and took this opportunity to provide our year 10 students with feedback regarding the quality of their customer service shown on the day. It was fantastic to see our older students engaging in this experience and providing support to our younger students.

Congratulations to all of our students and their teachers for such a successful venture!

Corinda Cares

Our newest Corinda Cares initiative has our students volunteering after school at the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre. Our students are helping to restore furniture for a centre that is a great asset to our community. The centre provide a welcoming community space and promotes social inclusion and delivers programs that respond to community needs providing a welcoming community space.

Gifted and Talented

Academy Conferences Senior Study Day

A small group of year 10 Honours students participated in a day of philosophy and critical thinking at the Anglican Church Grammar School. Lecturers Julie Arliss, Dr Chris O’Neill, and Jeffrey Hodges provided some highly thought-provoking sessions. The day finished with a debate discussing mobile phone usage in schools. Jeremy, Mirra and Amelia were fantastic representatives for our school and should be commended for their participation in the day.

The Arts

Media

This past week, year 10 Media students participated in a stage makeup workshop run by Velbella and also a lighting workshop run by the Queensland School of Film and TV. The students had a blast getting creative with their gory side. The skills will come in handy for our videos for change unit, when they produce films to create awareness for issues such as Domestic Violence and depression.

Instrumental Music

Our Big Band, Saxophone Ensemble and Amadeus Strings lit up the stage at Sherwood Fete ahead of Mother’s Day this year. Our students each took to the stage for a 20 minute set and performed some beautiful music for the local community. Thank you to all of the families and students who gave up their weekend to be a part of the Sherwood Primary School Fete.

Drama

Our year 12 students have been hard at work with the final stages of their play building preparing for the original production of REAL. This production is part of the year 12 Drama studies where students work with an industry director, Melissa Bud, to stage a production. The students are involved in all levels of the production, from writing, to acting, to set design and lighting. Performances are on Friday 7th June and Saturday 8th June.

Tickets are on sale now for $15 via TryBooking.

Creative Generation

The students participating in Creative Generation have had a wonderful few weeks of busy rehearsals. Charlotte went to the featured artists workshops last Friday and had rehearsals all weekend for featured dance, Sinead and Mia worked with Mackenzie Special School for a special dance item on Tuesday as guests as well as attending the finale rehearsal last weekend for all dancers too. Amelia has been rehearsing up a storm and singing as part of the core/central choir! An amazing effort from both girls!

Visual Art

On Friday, Year 7 and 8 Visual Art Excellence students visited the City to learn how public art can add life to a space. This is an opportunity to educate and provoke thought in relation to the history and future of public art. Initially students visited Fish Lane and analysed works that referenced the history of the area. They walked the Brisbane Contemporary Public Art Trail and were lucky enough to be invited into the Supreme Courts of Queensland to see a Sally Gabori work only seen by those who visit the Banco Court. The Public Art Trail then took students to the Botanic Gardens where they were taken on a guided tour of Botanica - 2019 whereby student analysed the dominant themes artists addressed in their installations. Possibly the most exciting part of their day however was meeting Mural artist, Hayley Welsh who had just completed her mural for the Brisbane Street Art Festival and happily answered questions about her work and process.

Resourceful Adolescent Program

Training in the Resourceful Adolescent Program will be held in Brisbane on Tuesday and Wednesday, 27th and 28th of August 2019.

The Resourceful Adolescent Program (RAP) was developed to build resilience and promote positive mental health in teenagers. The program specifically aims to prevent teenage depression and related difficulties.

Approximately one in five teenagers will develop depression during the course of their teenage years which could severely hamper their development and future prospects. RAP aims to increase the psychological resilience or resourcefulness of young people and draws on research of successful treatments for adolescent depression and the known psychosocial risk and protective factors at the individual, family and school level.

The RAP-A program for adolescents is a school–based program for 12 to 15 year olds that aims to improve the coping skills of teenagers.

RAP-P, like RAP-A, is a competency based program which aims to help parents boost their own self-esteem and the self-esteem of their adolescents. RAP-P also helps parents to manage their negative emotional overreactions to their adolescents and their adolescents' emotional overreactions to them.
