Executive Principals Report
Dear Parents and Friends
It’s hard to believe we are already at the end of our first term for 2019. Following the recent assessment phase, staff and students are well and truly ready for a break. Our year 11 students have survived their first assessment block for the New QCE. Our year 7 students have survived their first term in high school and we celebrated this with their official badge ceremony this week. They have settled into high school so smoothly this year and I am sure they are ready for a break.
Write That Essay
As you may be aware, our school has a very thorough plan for implementing Write That Essay – a very successful writing program developed by Professor Ian Hunter from the University of Auckland. This program has proven to be very successful across a range of schools, in particular in New Zealand. Recently three of our staff visited these schools to assess the impact this program had on student writing. Our staff returned very inspired and enthusiastic from their observations in several schools. This has motivated us even more to ensure we implement this across the school.
As part of our implementation process, students recently undertook some diagnostic writing assessments. The work was assessed by the Write That Essay team, and independently analysed. The data that we have unpacked is confirmation that the work we are doing at Corinda is certainly value– adding to individual students. It was so encouraging to receive feedback, and a parent information evening next term will provide more information on the work we are doing. I am confident parents will be able to assist students at home with editing and feedback once they are aware of the approaches and strategies we are using. This is a very exciting initiative for our staff and students.
Open Day
What a very successful Open Day we had last weekend. I have to commend our students in the way in which they presented and so readily gave up their Saturday to help our school shine. They did an amazing job and it was obvious that they demonstrated a great sense of pride in our school. Thank you to all parents and carers for enabling this to happen as well – for dropping them off and picking them up, for ironing an extra uniform for the week and for getting them here when you had your usual family responsibilities. Thank you!
I do hope you all have a very enjoyable Easter vacation. I look forward to meeting you all at Parent Teacher interviews following the break.

Legal Studies – National Convention
Congratulations to year 12 student Sophie who represented Queensland at the National Schools Constitutional Convention in Canberra. Sophie was one of 120 students from across the nation who assembled to discuss whether the Constitution needs to have a new preamble. Sophie won this all-expenses-paid trip after placing well last year’s Queensland convention.
While in Canberra, Sophie visited Parliament House, the High Court, Government House and the National Archives. She met with representatives of all the branches of government and international embassies. We are sure that these amazing experiences will be of great benefit to her as she continues to succeed in Legal Studies.

International
Recently we hosted 29 students from Niigata, Japan. Each student was teamed with a buddy and they stayed with families in our local community. The students were only here for 6 days but made many friends and had a variety of experiences. Each Japanese student spent some time in their buddy’s classes and they had specialised English lessons. Our Corinda students were able to practice their Japanese and have some meaningful conversations about “What life is like as a teenager in Japan”. This is the second time we have hosted a group from Niigata and we hope it is the start of a long relationship.

Brisbane French Film Festival Excursion 2019
Madame Muil and Ms Zhao (Chinese teacher) took the Year 10s and 11s on an excursion to the Brisbane French Film Festival on Tuesday 2 April. They watched I Feel Good, a comedy about a man who is searching for a lucrative new invention. The students and teachers took a train into James Street, Fortitude Valley, where they had something to eat at the nearby restaurant before heading in for their fun cultural and linguistic experience at the nearby Palace Cinemas! The Festival is on until the 14 April.
