As you may recall last year I used the metaphor of “Lead like a Pirate”. We sailed the high seas and completed a successful voyage, escaped mutiny and found our treasures – our year 12 outcomes – pure gold. This year we are walking through the gates of the Magic Kingdom where it all started with a mouse (or did it?). Over the break I learned about the Wisdom of Walt Disney – and how he created his dream - The Happiest Place on Earth. Inspired by his wisdom I will be sharing this with our school community this year.
This year I have challenged everyone to aspire to creating a Corinda as one of the happiest places on earth. Wisdom from Walt begins with his belief that “If you can dream it, you can do it”. Walt Disney’s dream to create a place where children and parents can have fun together began sitting on a park bench – doing nothing. This idea in his head at the time soon settled as a dream in his heart.
The Disneyland dream was almost over before it had even begun. Walt Disney struggled for years to find the financial and political support to make his vision of a new kind of experiential family entertainment a reality. Like many dreamers, Walt could see what other people could not. He faced enormous adversity in introducing the Disneyland entertainment concept to the world. Through his tenacity and determination, his dream eventually became a reality.
Our newly inducted leaders along with the Seniors 2019 were encouraged to …..take time to DREAM…so as to plan, set goals, and allow their imaginations run wild……..to create a bigger and better tomorrow for Corinda. An exciting year ahead for our leaders and Seniors 2019.
Year 7 Meet and Greet
It was great to meet our new year 7 parents last week at our Parent Evening. I do hope you found the information informative and helpful as you navigate your way through the beginning of your new adventure in High School. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions or need clarification.
Corinda – Most Improved School
This week we were profiled in the Courier Mail as one of the most improved schools in relation to student outcomes. We are very proud to report that the Courier Mail journalist informed us that when they compiled their data our school was the number 1 most improved school in Queensland over the past 8 years. It is great to be recognised for what we do to support our students – it is our belief that when we work together with the student, giving feedback and lifting and stretching that we can get the best out of them. We have high expectations and we know our students can rise to these and they have proven this.
Our improvement agenda at Corinda is our work and we believe in ensuring we provide every opportunity for students to succeed. This ongoing improvement has recently been celebrated with our staff and students as we analysed our performance on the Writing Task in the QCS test over the year. Below is a graph which demonstrates the improvements we have made over the years. These improvements are outstanding. The black line in this graph demonstrates the improvement trend in the Writing Task. Corinda students really do rise to the expectations and we are very proud of them.
A lot of hard work has been put in at Corinda over the past years and it is wonderful to be recognised for this – everyone in our School Community has contributed to this achievement – parents, staff and students. I feel very proud and most importantly our students have benefitted from this – and this is why we are all here. Corinda State High School – Exceed Your Expectations!

Whole School Assessment Policy
Corinda State High School has a new assessment policy for years 7 to 12. Special Consideration Provisions are now known as Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments, in alignment with the new QCE system. There is a process that needs to be followed to ensure we maintain consistency across the school. The policy is available from the Rules and Policies section of the school’s website.
School Attendance
We know that some students find it difficult to attend school for a multitude of reasons. If your student is refusing to come to school please communicate with us to let us know you are having difficulty as well as utilising the suggestions in the article, How can I get my teenager to go to school?

Boer War Commemorative Service
On 7 February, senior History students Kayla Aukuso, Isabel Dow, Sophie Veprek and Zach Ajineh attended and participated in the Sherwood RSL’s Boer War commemorative service. This significant community event commemorated the War that occurred from 1899 – 1902 between the British and the Dutch-Afrikaners (Boers) in South Africa. In alliance with the British military forces, Australia also became involved in the conflict, resulting in the deployment of approximately 1600 Australians, 11 of which were from Queensland.
Isabel Dow had the privilege of investigating the Boer War and the circumstances of the servicemen during the conflict, particularly during the Battle of Onverwacht in 1902. Her research essay was highly commended by the RSL, and Isabel was awarded the Boer War Essay Prize. Isabel was awarded a medal, and a $100 cheque for her success.
The RSL has also assisted Corinda State High School to foster a partnership with Ermelo High School in South Africa. During the service, Sophie Veprek had the honour of reading a personal letter from the students of Ermelo to Corinda, while Kayla and Zach took part in laying of the wreath. The reciprocal partnership between the Sherwood RSL and Corinda State High School has enabled the students to understand the ongoing significance of the Boer War in our modern society.
Courting the Law
As a part of their study of the Queensland legal system, students in Year 11 Legal Studies had the opportunity to visit the Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law to observe the legal system in action. The day started off with a briefing by the Supreme Court Library, before they were allowed to visit some of the court rooms in session. They explored a range of cases, including various stages of trials and sentencing hearings. At the end of the day, students participated in a legal researching workshop, preparing them for teir assessment in the course. This was an excellent opportunity to connect classroom learning with the real world and the students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity.

Parent Support and Involvement
Parents, who help their young child learn to read, attend classes or activities and guide the child through their first school project may begin to withdraw from involvement at high school level as their child gets older and becomes more independent. However there are many ways that parents can continue to be involved with their child’s education and in high school while encouraging a child’s emerging independence. Parental involvement in education and school life nurtures a child’s well-being and academic success.
