Executive Principals Report

Dear Parents and Friends

Earlier this week the Government released their response to the Queensland Anti-Cyberbullying Taskforce report. There are 29 recommendations in the taskforce report. We as a school community are working through this report to examine what additional strategies our school needs to consider. It has always been our commitment to take cyberbullying seriously and it is included in our school Responsible Behaviour Plan.

Since the introduction of our anonymous reporting program ‘Stymie’, we have been able to respond to a broad range of issues including social media matters reported to us. We consider this program to be a key part of our strategies to provide students with an opportunity to report incidents and receive support. We have a number of positive posters regarding social media postings to stimulate thinking and reflection for students with the hope that they will ‘think’ before they post. We will continue to look for proactive and preventative strategies that will reduce issues that may be deemed as cyberbullying.

We will continue to implement our Electronic Device Policy that is aimed at preventing cyberbullying while at school and promote face to face social interaction as our priority for social engagement while at school.

The report can be found at the link below.

The Government has accepted all 29 recommendations in the report.

If you have any questions, concerns or possible ideas / strategies that could assist our students I am always open to suggestions and always looking for ways we can ensure our students are happy and healthy while they navigate their teenage years.

Some more of our best …

Alex Wentz, Year 9

Recently, Alex competed in the Australian Inline Hockey Nationals in Adelaide.

For the second time this year, Alex was chosen to represent Queensland in the sport of hockey. All his hard work on ice skates and roller blades is paying off.

Congratulations, Alex and the U15 Queensland Team won Gold and are the 2018 National Champions.

Jemma and Tayla Gossow, Year 9

Jemma and Tayla played a couple of tennis tournaments over the school holidays. At the Miami grass tournament, Jemma won the doubles and the 14 conso.

They then played the QLD KDV Clay court championships - where Jemma won the 14 girls singles! She was also a finalist in the doubles, however the final game was cancelled due to the rain.

Tayla also played the clay court championships - also being a finalist in the 14 singles conso, unfortunately this was also cancelled due to the rain.

Micheala and Tahlia Williamson

Congratulations to Micheala Williamson for Representing QLD at the National Schools Futsal Championships over the school holidays. Micheala played extremely hard throughout the tournament. Unfortunately, her team QLD Girls Under 15's just missed out on the finals.

Well done also to Tahlia Williamson who played at the National Schools Futsal Championships. Tahlia was selected to play for Under 14 Girls FNNSW Team. Tahlia gained a lot of experience from the tournament and looks forward to using her new skills.

Keep up the great work Micheala and Tahlia!

Graduates from the Mater Education Program

Congratulations to our first cohort of students who received their dual certification - Certificate II Health Support Services and Certificate III in Health Services Assistance. The students have benefited from the very practical nature of this course and have all completed placement on the wards in the Mater Hospital. Many will now pursue employment in the Health sector including on the wards at the Mater Hospital. Well done students – we are very proud of your achievements!

Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow

Recently, our year 12 students began a joint project with Year 5 student from Corinda State School. Entitled the “Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow” project, students are using Virtual Reality, 360-Degree cameras, 3D modelling and 3D printing to design an element for the Corinda SS Stem Garden. The year 5 students, mentored by the year 12s, will put together a design and then pitch their idea to a professional landscape architect at the culmination of the project. Watch out for these young people - the Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow.

USR Radio Broadcast

On Friday 12 October USQ’s Phoenix Radio recorded a live outside broadcast at second break. Students were treated to performances from some of our best musicians and got to see some of our staff competing in trivia and games. Staff and students were interviewed about their experiences at Corinda and the hosts got to try some of our exciting new tech, like the Class VR headsets. Thanks to all of the students and staff involved - we sounded very professional and will be asking USQ back next year to again promote our wonderful school.

Job Seekers

Positions are currently available for temporary work during December 2018 and January 2019. This is an ideal opportunity for our graduating students to earn some holiday income!

Please see our Facebook page for further details.

If you looking for casual employment or a foot in the door to your dream occupation, job vacancies are also advertised on the job notice board outside the nurses’ office in G block. If you have any questions or need help with your resume or techniques for interview, please contact our Youth Support Coordinator (Kara) who will assist students in finding casual employment.

Library News

The library has continued to have a full and rich life in Terms 3 and 4: adding over 2000 copies of new books and visits by all Y7-10 classes. We have creative break-time activities: communal jigsaw puzzles, still-life sketching installations, origami, LEGO robotics kits, and board, card and computer games. New activities this term will include knitting squares for ‘Wrap with Love’, a comedy film, giant chess; card making; and a variety of STEM challenges involving various foodstuffs and stationary.

We participated in the United Nations’ Peace Day Commemoration (21 September) which involved answering the question, ‘What does peace mean to you?’ Dozens of thoughtful responses ranged from: ‘Freedom from critique or violence,’ to ‘Home alone, no responsibilities.’
