Executive Principals Report
Dear Parents and Friends
As the term draws to a close, our staff and students are well and truly ready for a break. It has been a very full calendar of events this term, amidst QCS testing and submitting QTAC preferences for our year 12 students. Our staff have been very much immersed in preparations for the new QCE that our year 10 students will enter next year. A lot of preparation and planning has had to be undertaken to ensure our programs are ready for implementation. This reform will have a large impact on other areas of our school – especially our school calendar and events, reporting and assessment blocks. We will keep you informed as these changes occur next year, as the major impact will be in 2020 when students are in year 12 with the final external assessment pieces that are administered by the QCAA (Queensland Curriculum Assessment Authority).
Congratulations to all our students who performed at our Multicultural Evening last week. Our students put in many hours rehearsing and it was great to see the broad range of cultures represented. What a great sense of community we enjoyed.
Speech Night 2018 – Crack the Code
This year we are Cracking the Code at our Annual Speech Night. As we have now outgrown our School Assembly Hall, this event will be held off site at the Riverlife Church in Seventeen Mile Rocks. We are excited to be able to access this venue, as we will have ample seating for everyone, a generous stage space with established lighting – all in air-conditioned comfort. Please set the date aside to come and join in this wonderful celebration with our students – Wednesday 24 October, 6.30 pm.
Air Conditioning Project
The year 7 block will have air conditioning installed over the September vacation. I am sure our year 7 students will enjoy this during term 4. It is great to see this project become reality thanks to the efforts of our P & C Association.
I do hope you all have a well-earned spring break and I look forward to seeing you all at the special term 4 events. Thank you for your continued support throughout the term. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful school with supportive parents and staff. I feel very privileged to work at Corinda and to be surrounded by amazing young people with so much potential.

Some more of our best …
Kim Nguyen, year 9
Kim is a member of the school’s Symphonic Band and is a member of the Air Force Cadets. Kim has been selected as a young talent in 2 Wing Band (S/Qld), and will perform at Banded By The Forces. This is the culmination of the 4/18 3 Wing Multi Wing Musicians Course, which will see up to 100 cadet musicians descend on RAAF Base Richmond for a week long Musicians Course over the school holidays. What an exciting opportunity!
Mooting @ Corinda
To complement the Corinda Legal Studies program, students are given the opportunity to participate in mooting. Mooting involves students arguing a hypothetical legal case in an imaginary court setting, very much like the job of barristers. This year, students were given the opportunity to participate in two mooting competitions – offered by USQ and QUT.
In the USQ competition held earlier this year students were given a hypothetical criminal appeal. This competition involved over 30 teams from schools in both Brisbane and Toowoomba. Two teams represented Corinda, with Saron, Gracie and Holly on Team One and Naomi, Kaleb and Jasmine on Team Two. Progression was based on points, and although both teams scored well, they did not progress beyond the preliminary round.
For the QUT competition, students were given a hypothetical civil case to argue on appeal. This year’s case was a challenge for both Gracie and Kaleb, as it involved an area of law they had not studied in class. Both students rose to the occasion, not only winning their round, but also earning enough points to progress to the semi-finals. The students fought well, receiving compliments from the judges of both rounds, despite not progressing further.
Both competitions involved a significant commitment of time outside of school hours. Many lunchtimes and after school sessions occurred for both competitions. Further activities, like a preparation session in the QUT Law Library with their Legal Studies teachers also allowed students to experience what being a law student can be like. The students have gained valuable experience and have been able to make connections with current law students should they choose to study law at QUT in 2019. Special thanks go to Mr Griffin, Mr Gilroy and Ms Heymer for the time they spent mentoring the students throughout both competitions.
International News
This week we are farewelling 6 of our study abroad students. Andrea Pinna, Francesco Tartaglia, Laura Hartel, Laura Berga, Edoardo Anfossi and Sara Ricci have all enjoyed a one term stay in Brisbane. The highlight has been relationships with their school friends and homestay families. The students have particularly enjoyed their time at Southbank, the Gold Coast and visiting Brisbane City. We know their visit to Corinda will have a life-long impact. We wish them well in their future studies.
Language News
Last week we held an information night for the French trip to Noumea, held in the June / July holidays of 2019. The trip will focus on improving language skills. Each day students will attend 3 hours of French tuition, will billet with French speaking families and will have an opportunity to explore the beautiful island of Noumea. If you are studying or have studied French and are keen to know more about this trip, please contact Ms Muil in G03 or you can email her on jmuil2@eq.edu.au. The duration of the trip will be one week and the cost will be approximately $2550.
Arts Happenings
Senior Music Night
The Senior Music Night was a bittersweet celebration of the amazing talent of our senior students' instrumental and vocal talents.
This was their last performance as a cohort of students who have built lasting bonds with each other and their devoted teachers. We thank them for always representing Corinda SHS with pride.
