Executive Principals Report
Dear Parents and Friends
Corinda students have certainly been actively involved in an extensive range of activities over the past two weeks including:
- Beenleigh and Gold Coast Eisteddfods for Dance students
- Science Week activities
- The Exhibition – The Sheep Show Team and the Drumline Performance
- QUT High School Mooting Competition for our Legal Studies students
- Music Excellence Performance Evening
- Suzhou Ivy Study Tour – student buddies
- Circuit Debating Competitions
- Entrepreneurial Excellence and App Building Workshop.
Our school always seems to be a very busy place with many extended opportunities for our students. I have received so many positive reports from people who have been involved with our students in the above activities and I always feel very proud of the way in which they present and perform. Our students are very special young people and they deserve to be congratulated.
Student Well Being Programs
We are very excited to be able to offer some student wellbeing programs before and after school. It is great to see students taking up these opportunities to support their health. Please encourage students to take up these opportunities as there is no cost involved and we would love to see more students taking the time to practice self-care.
We are always looking for feedback and suggestions, so if you know of any additional programs or initiatives that might be helpful, we would welcome your ideas. It is our intention to grow this in order to build on a positive school culture that supports health and wellbeing.
Helen Jamieson, Executive Principal

Some more of our best …
Maddison Whelan- Australian National Cyclo-Cross U19 Women’s Champion
Madison Whelan (Dillon) of year 12 travelled to Victoria on the 11 – 12 August and brought the gold back to Queensland - what an amazing achievement!
Bunar Lip Sync
The school was buzzing with music in week 4 as students battled it out in the Bunar Lip Sync competition. Designed to promote the character strength of ‘Zest’ – the competition challenged students to get out of their comfort zone and have fun. The energy was certainly evident, with 12 teams and 2 solo acts channelling the talents of music greats such as ‘Sia’, ‘John Williamson,’ ‘Beyonce’ and ‘The Biebs’, as well as legendary musicals such as ‘Rocky Horror’ and ‘Highschool Musical Mash up’. House Masters even got in on the act with a revamped version of “We are Family” by Sister Sledge! Congratulations to Moori House Team who won the finals challenge on Friday, performing a Jackson 5 number.
Bunar would like to thank the staff and students who either performed or supported by audience participation and voting – as well as Home group teachers who promoted the week’s activities with the Pop Quiz challenge.
HPE
CONGRATULATIONS to all our Senior Winter Gala Day sporting teams - in particular, our District Premiership-winning teams - Year 10 Girls Tennis, Year 10 Boys Tennis, Open Girls Tennis, and Year 10 Girls Netball. Best of luck at Metropolitan Finals!
Entrepreneurial Excellence
On Thursday 9 August, twenty of our most innovative year 10 and 11 students conceived, designed and built a smartphone app in a day. In partnership with iYouth, these budding entrepreneurs honed their ideas with support from Mr Navdeep “Nav” Pasricha and the team from iYouth. Corinda will be working with Nav into the future as we continue to guide our young entrepreneurs on their journey. Keep an eye out for these students – they are going to change the world. Thanks Nav and team, we had a great time! Nav’s TED talk will be published online very soon.
Arts Happenings
Visual Art
Year 11 Visual Arts in Practice Students Exhibit at Corinda Council Library for Book Week
This year, our Year 11 Visual Arts in Practice students have illustrated artworks to complement two shortlisted children’s picture books – “Mopoke”, and “The Second Sky”. The Children’s Book Council of Australia shortlist books that are considered for their annual literary awards, awards winners are announced during book week in August each year.
Commissioned by the head librarian at the Corinda Council Library to create a display for book week, the students were given a brief by their teacher to create artworks that either extended or complemented the stories in these picture books. This resulted in a series of creatively composed images and paintings that further embraced the story lines of these books. Students worked in the mediums of watercolour and collage. Their artworks will be on display at the Corinda Council Library, Oxley Rd, Corinda, for the coming month.

Instrumental Music
Drumline at the EKKA
Our fantastic drumline impressed at the Ekka with Music on the Move on Friday 17 August. Students coped with very warm temperatures to entertain the crowds throughout the day!
We are very proud of how they performed and conducted themselves throughout the day, they were excellent ambassadors for our school. This was Drumline's first public performance and thanks to the hard work students have put in, it could not have gone better.
Friends of Corinda Music – Bunnings BBQ
A huge thank you to the committee and parent and student volunteers who worked tirelessly at the Bunnings BBQ on Saturday 18 August. The committee made a substantial profit, which will go towards providing instruments and other resources for our Instrumental Music program.
Drama
The Scene Project is well and truly underway with students working hard to create their drama piece which will be performed at Sunpac in October. On 22 August they will be undertaking a workshop with Qld Theatre Company director, Mr Steve Pirie, who will give feedback and advice as their performance takes shape.
Music

National Science Week at Corinda
This was our biggest one yet guided by Mr Pilkington, Ms Ali, Ms Luu and Mr Roff and the team of STEM Ambassadors. We had everything from flaming bubbles to air cannons, Mentos fountains to bottle rockets and everything in between. We also had special guest presenter Mr David Crock from the Bureau of Meteorology give a talk about the link between climate change and weather. The Brisbane Astronomical Society gave us glimpses into the past through their telescopes. We viewed the photons of some galaxies that left them over 100,000 years ago and had been travelling through space for that time until they reached our retinas!

Parenting Ideas
Overcoming the curse of perfectionism
Perfectionism is a modern curse in families and schools. Fear of making mistakes holds back children and is a great impediment to children reaching their full potential.
