Executive Principals Report

Dear Parents and Friends

This week we hosted a visit for representatives from Turners and Growers (T&G). Special representatives came from New Zealand to join two local employees from the Brisbane Markets to discuss our future partnership. This is an exciting opportunity for our school as we have been selected as one of the first schools in Australia to be sponsored by this organisation. T&G are a global company who work with producers to grow their specific produce lines.

This work is already being undertaken in New Zealand schools and we are looking forward to partnering and strengthening our programs in Agriculture and Food Safety. One of their areas they work in includes Healthy Eating, Active Living focus (HEAL) which has seen T&G support the Garden to Table program at schools in New Zealand for nearly five years. T&G are the Official Growing Partner of Garden to Table, supporting the next generation of Kiwis on their journey to a healthy life and mind - grounded in growing and enjoying fresh food. The program was inspired by Stephanie Alexander and the Kitchen to Garden Foundation. Given the growing presence of T&G in Australia, they are keen to extend this commitment to schools where they have offices – Corinda is the first in Australia!

Our guests were very impressed with our gardens and produce that has been created by our students in our Hospitality Kitchens. Our current kitchen gardens near our Applied Studies facilities are overflowing with herbs, vegetables and edible flowers. The students are really enjoying being a part of the full cycle of garden to table concept.

Turners and Growers presented our school with a special ornament and garden tools, along with some signature kiwi fruit varieties to mark the beginning of our partnership.

PERMAH Pillar – Health

As part of our focus on Positive Education and the PERMA model that we are using, one of the key areas is positive health. Below is a short exert provided by a company we work with to assist us in embedding Positive Education called – Unleashing Personal Potential.

Restful sleep, being active and eating healthy are all connected to each other. When we get a good sleep at night, it makes it easier for us to eat well and move more the next day (Rath, 2013). These things have a flow on effect, and can cause either an upward or downward spiral in our daily lives. Research has shown exercise can help to improve not only the quantity of sleep but also the quality: daytime physical activity can stimulate longer periods of slow-wave sleep, the deepest and most restorative stages of sleep (Breus, 2018). Getting enough sleep is really important, as during sleep our body repairs itself, while our mind is able to rest and consolidate previous learning. We all have a natural sleep and waking cycle- if we disrupt this cycle we can find it hard to get to sleep. It can also make us irritable, and lead to low concentration and health issues such as heart problems, weight gain and depression. Having a bedtime routine is a great way to cue our bodies for rest (Rath, 2013). This might include journaling, listening to quiet music, reading, prayer, doing some gentle yoga or meditation. To help maintain our natural rhythm we should turn off electronics a few hours before sleep, at roughly the same time every night. The exposure to light from our devices suppresses melatonin which is our sleepy hormone, making it harder to fall asleep and decreasing sleep quality.

Description of Positive Education Practice: Bedtime Routine

  1. Think about two habits you could include in your routine to get ready for bed each night.
  2. In order to implement your new bedtime routine, finish this sentence for each of your two bedtime habits.

“I will [INSERT ACTION] every weeknight at [TIME] in [PLACE].”

e.g. 1- “I will [stop using my electronic devices] every weeknight at [7:30pm] in [my bedroom].”

e.g. 2- “I will [read] every weeknight at [8:45pm] in [my bed].

Main message:

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” – Jim Rohn

With the end of term fast approaching I thought this article might be an opportune time for parents to sit with students and make a plan for the new term ahead, with the aim of developing some healthy habits and routines for more improved well-being.

Enjoy the winter vacation and I look forward to a very enjoyable Athletics carnival with plenty of house spirit next week. A great way to finish the term with the students.

Gifted and Talented Students

Golden Opportunities

On Monday we saw the first Golden Opportunity Day for 2018. These days allow local Primary Schools to be immersed in higher order thinking skills. The topic: Showcasing Problems in Living Systems generated a huge amount of interest, with 50 students from grades 4 to 6 attending. During the day at the farm, the students classified and examined a range of mosquitos and fungi, they analysed mosquito and fungal lifecycles and were able to explain how the features of these organisms allow them to adapt to different environments. Students also toured the school’s farm and met the animals, and participated in planting over 300 seeds. The day culminated in the students using their knowledge gained from the workshops to propose problem solving solutions to combat the impact of mosquitos as disease vectors in a changing climate.

Special thanks must go to our mosquito presenters Dr Jill Fernandes, a medical entomologist from the University of Queensland, and Brian Montgomery, advanced medical entomologist at Metro South PHU from Queensland Health.

We are thrilled to announce that our two upcoming Golden Opportunity Days will be held on Monday 6 August, with a focus on Dance and Visual Arts. More information will be released very soon.

Community Knitting Day 23 June

After a huge success last year (over 830 squares knitted/crocheted on the day), the Centenary Knitting and Crochet Circle are holding this years’ Community Knitting Day on Saturday 23 June (see poster for times and location).

The aim is to complete as many squares as possible, with the goal this year set at 1000. Squares will be assembled into rugs for charity.

Drop in on the day:

  • Knit/crochet a square. Stay for an hour or stay for the day. Please bring your own 8-ply yarn and 4mm needles if you can – limited supplies provided on the day.
  • Always wanted to learn how to knit or crochet? Someone will be there to help.
  • Complimentary tea, coffee, morning tea and lunch.
  • Find something special on the stall selling handmade items (not just knit and crochet).
  • Lots of raffles throughout the day
  • All funds raised on the day will be used to purchase yarn for rugs.

Or you may like to work some squares at home and drop them in on the day:

  • 8 ply yarn, 4mm needles, 40 stitches and knit to make a square. Garter stitch (all plain knitting) is fine, but be adventurous if you would like to.

If you are into crochet, we regularly have squares that need to be crocheted together, please get in touch.
