Executive Principals Report

Dear Parents and Friends

No doubt your homes are feeling the pressure of pending assessment and completion of assignments as we head into the final pieces of assessment for the semester. It is a fine balancing act in the household at this time and the role that parents / carers play in supporting our young people is critical. Sometimes it is just about being there next to them, listening to them practice their presentations, having them read out what they have written for submission (asking them if parts flow properly) – assisting them in identifying flow and grammar, or giving them some questions to complete.

Whatever the task, the fact that you are there by their side is enough for them to know that you are with them. It is moments like these that they will remember in the years to come. Thank you for your ongoing support with our students as we work together to try to prepare them for a successful future. Our open classrooms are also a good support for our students and these are well attended each afternoon. Please encourage your students to take up these additional opportunities.

New QCE

The New QCE is fast approaching and our year 10 students will be involved in pathway planning under this new system. This is very different to the current system and it is important that both Parents and students understand the requirements for completing their year 11 and 12 education. Last week our Senior Schooling Head of Department – Leanne Hixon advised our current year 12 students to refrain from giving advice to our year 10 students. This was delivered with very good intent, as we do not want our year 10 students seeking advice that is incorrect. The system our year 12 students are working under is completely different to the new system in relation to VET qualifications and the ATAR calculations.

This year our SET planning will be conducted only by Ms Hixon and Mr Noble, to ensure our students all received the correct advice and information. I encourage all parents to take up every opportunity to attend meetings and read the information provided. If you are unable to attend the scheduled meetings, please do not hesitate to make an alternative appointment to come and speak with either Leanne or Andrew. We want to ensure that our students make the right decisions as this new system is very rigid and does not allow students to make changes as in the current system.

Recent Awards….Connecting Globally and Internationalising the Curriculum

Last week the Department of Education International announced its major awards each attracting $10 000 each. Corinda State High School was announced as the recipient of two of these awards. The first for its work in Connecting Globally, and the second for the way our faculties have Internationalised the Curriculum. We are very proud of this achievement and this is an outcome of our Strategic Priority – Actively Global. We recognise that this is an important part of educating our young people for a globalised world and career market.

Year 12 - 100 days to go

Our wonderful Year 12 students celebrated their 100 days to go milestone on Friday 1st June. School captains organised a celebration in the assembly hall, with a photo booth and aspirational notes. We wish you all the best for your final 100 days Year 12s! Good luck!

Guidance Officer

Yarraman Day! House Spirit at its best.

On 23 May Yarraman hosted a day of ‘Big Games’ for the Corinda Community. This included large versions of Connect Four, Noughts and Crosses, Jenga, Scrabble and a Soccer Darts game. Additionally, each House competed with another in a Checkers Tournament across the week, which was a positive and intense experience for all the teams. House points were given out to all who participated in any of the offered activities, and the oval was full of cheering, laughter and enthusiasm. It was great to see such enjoyment from all the staff and students.

Golden Opportunities

Title: A golden opportunity for students in years 4/5/6 to attend an Experiential Learning Day on Monday 11 June 2018 at Corinda SHS “Showcasing problem Solving in Living Systems”

Queensland Virtual STEM Academy

A select group of students in year 7 and 8 this week started engaging in the Queensland Virtual STEM Academy courses run through the Queensland Academy. These students are working with Microcontrollers with Arduino which is an introduction to coding and electronics or a Grand Challenge in which students will be presenting proposals for renewable fuel solutions. The keen attitude displayed by these young students is to be commended as they do have to log in during their own time each week. Enrolment for these courses is by invitation only and there are already plans for more courses next term.

Debating News

The debaters competed against Canterbury College, with the 11s and 12s winning their debates and the others losing by one point. This is the third win in a row for the 12s, which is a great effort. We also had a number of best speaker awards with these going to Phoebe Do, Eva Simon, Susi Rea and Dhruv Singh. Thanks to those who came along to support the debaters and to the coaches for all their hard work preparing them.

Community Knitting Day

After a huge success last year (over 830 squares knitted/crocheted on the day), the Centenary Knitting and Crochet Circle are holding this years’ Community Knitting Day on Saturday 23 June (see poster for times and location).

The aim is to complete as many squares as possible, with the goal this year set at 1000. Squares will be assembled into rugs for charity.

  • Drop in on the day:
    - Knit/crochet a square. Stay for an hour or stay for the day. Please bring your own 8-ply yarn and 4mm needles if you can – limited supplies provided on the day.
    - Always wanted to learn how to knit or crochet? Someone will be there to help.
    - Complimentary tea, coffee, morning tea and lunch.
    - Find something special on the stall selling handmade items (not just knit and crochet).
    - Lots of raffles throughout the day
    - All funds raised on the day will be used to purchase yarn for rugs.
  • Or you may like to work some squares at home and drop them in on the day:
    - 8 ply yarn, 4mm needles, 40 stitches and knit to make a square. Garter stitch (all plain knitting) is fine, but be adventurous if you would like to.
  • If you are into crochet, we regularly have squares that need to be crocheted together, please get in touch.

Volunteer as a young leader at Day Camp 3-6 July 2018

We are looking for enthusiastic motivated young people to help lead a small group of primary school aged kids through our Day Camp program. 3 – 6 July from 9 am – 3 pm each day. Day Camp is a program of fun and excitement within a Christian environment for children in years 1 to 5. Run by the Oxley Uniting Church at the Corinda Pony Club. It is the fun of hikes, craft, the thrill of cooking your own food over a campfire, games and making things using what nature provides. We provide training and pair you with an experienced leader and you get to join in the fun each day. More info and to register visit www.oxleydarrauc.org.au .
