Executive Principals Report

Dear Parents and Friends

We are already in week 6 of the term, which means our students will be well and truly amid important assessment or preparation for upcoming assessment. I ask you all to monitor your student’s assessment calendar to ensure they are on track with any pending assignments due in the coming weeks.

NAPLAN is over for the year. Our year 7 and 9 students came very well prepared for the days of testing and are to be congratulated for the way in which they approached the testing. We believe NAPLAN provides us with very important information and feedback so that we may continue to value add to each individual student. Our staff wait with anticipation for the results to be released to measure how they are influencing students’ literacy and numeracy, and then assist them in planning strategies for improving and preparing students for the senior years of schooling.

Our Year 10 students are approaching some important decisions in relation to the new QCE. It is critical that students, along with their parents, familiarise themselves with the requirements of the new system and ensure subject selection is carefully undertaken with a realistic view of the student’s academic capability. We are fortunate at Corinda to have such a broad selection of subjects and pathways to enable students to reach their desired goals. Please do not hesitate to contact our Senior Schooling Head of Department Leanne Hixon or our Deputy Principal Andrew Noble who are overseeing this process if you have any questions or concerns.

The new system does not allow for subject changes, and it is so important that we map a successful pathway for each student. There is always a way to reach the desired goal and we will always work closely with our students to support them.

Year 11 Leadership Day

A very successful Year 11 Leadership day was held last week. Hard to believe that we are beginning to work on leadership development already as we approach preparations for seniors of 2019. It was a very positive day with the students, and we hope to continue this work throughout the year. We were fortunate to have Unleashing Potential staff work with our students, with their expertise on Positive Education and the link to student leadership. It was great to see the students so engaged in the program and working together as a cohesive team. Definitely some potential emerging in this cohort. Congratulations to our year 11 students for the way in which you embraced this important work.

Science

StemUP – Science collaboration with Corinda State School

The best way to learn science is to do science and that is exactly what our Science Department has been doing with the year 6 students from Corinda State School. Teachers from both schools have been collaboratively planning rigorous and engaging learning experiences aligned to the Australian Curriculum to allow students to explore the fascinating world of electricity. The program, run over 8 weeks, will guide students through the basics of conductors and insulators, simple circuits as well as generating electricity using renewable technologies. We are grateful for the time and effort Mr Liam Pilkington is dedicating to the program and we appreciate the terrific response we are getting from the students and staff from Corinda State School.

Year 7 Science – Ecosystems

Our year 7 teachers have been very busy exploring the complex relationships that exist in nature down at our farm. Recently, students have explored the biotic and abiotic factors that make it possible for organism to live in a habitat. Students have been observing and recording light, temperature, pH and other quantities to build a scientific understanding of what makes certain environments able to sustain life. The flip side is understanding what impacts humans have had on ecosystems and the flow-on effects this has in nature.

Year 12 Chemistry – Extended Experimental Investigations

Extended Experimental Investigations require a huge time commitment to exploring, refining and ultimately, answering, a research question of significance to the context and student. The context of Pool Chemistry opens up a world of possible questions relating to rates of change, chemical reactions and the effect of external factors on chemical process. Our senior chemistry students have access to sophisticated technology such as our dual-beam spectrophotometer and high-speed centrifuge to assist in the gathering and processing of primary data. Soon, a group of students will be going to the Smith’s Snack food company factory at Tingalpa to explore and understand the time-critical nature of fats and oils in the food industry through our longstanding partnership with Pepsico.

The Arts

Year 9 Art Excellence

During Term 1 Ms Waite’s Year 9 Art Excellence students, studied Printmaking. These particular images are based around their bird themed monoprints, which students re-composed into A3 sized hand coloured collages, using their original black and white prints in varying sizes to create the new imagery.

Year 11 Visual Art Goma Excursion

Year 11 Visual Art students were out and about this week in South Brisbane. The students spent the day viewing artworks in galleries and external walls on their excursion to South Bank.

Sherwood State School Fete

Our Big Band, Amadeus Strings, Woodwind Quintet, and Junior and Senior Dance Troupes performed at the Sherwood State School Fete last weekend. This annual event gave our students a valuable opportunity to perform leading up to several competitions this term. Our dancers will be competing at the Brisbane Dance Eisteddfod and BPAC competitions in the next few weeks and our music ensembles will perform at Fanfare on 8 June. Corinda SHS is also hosting Fanfare this year. Thank you to our amazing teachers and performers who give up huge amounts of their own time to prepare for these events.

Languages

The Language Perfect World Championships is on again this year. The competition starts at 4:00 pm on Monday 21 May and finishes on Thursday 31 May. All students who study a language are expected to take part in this competition.

The categories the students can reach are 500 points – Credit, 1000 points – Bronze, 2000 points – Silver, 3000 points- Gold, 5000 points – Emerald, 10000 points – Elite. Last year we had over 150 students receive a certificate and we hope to have a better year this year. In each category students go into the draw for iPod and iTunes vouchers.

Good luck to all of our participating students and remember every question you answer will help you with your exam studies.

Digital Technologies

Mother’s Day Markets

Year 10 Business Studies classes ran the Mother’s Day Market Stalls on Thursday 3 May. Students handcrafted gifts to sell at their mini markets to celebrate Mother’s Day. Students needed to consider how their products would appeal to their target market, while maintaining stock control and identifying the best pricing strategies. The market was a success with most stalls selling all stock. All proceeds generated from this learning experience will be donated to the students’ choice of charity.

Risky Business

Year 11 Diploma of Business classes visited Indooroopilly Shopping Centre’s Central Management team, AMP Capital, on Thursday 10 May to discuss how risk management strategies are implemented on a large scale. Students have been learning the ins and outs of the risk management process, including the legislative requirements placed on businesses. During the excursion, the Operations Manager took the students on tour of the centre’s security control room, parking control room, fire control room and cooling systems room. Students took part in the centre’s risk induction program that is offered to external contractors, and were given the opportunity to ask the operations team questions to assist with their assessment this term.

Drones, Drones, Drones!

This week the Year 9 Digital Technologies class started working with their CoDrones for the first time! They started by building controllers for their class drones. Over the next three weeks, students will learn how to program their drones to fly and complete challenges using pre-programed flight plans. This unit requires students to work collaboratively with each other to problem-solve and take risks. Students will learn about how drones may be used for different purposes and will learn the importance of pre-flight checks and safety procedures for flying drones. Mr Dawson and his Year 9 class will be Drone experts in no time!

Domestic and Family Violence

May is Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Prevention month. This year, the department’s campaign encourages us all to do something to prevent DFV before it starts. Actions we can take include:

  • challenging gender stereotypes
  • modelling respectful relationships
  • speaking out if you hear excuses for violence
  • celebrating positive role models.

Schools and work places are encouraged to use DFV Prevention month as an opportunity to look at the positive ways in which we can show mutual respect and promote equality of opportunity.

Actions you can take include:

  • completing the Recognise, Respond, Refer: Domestic and family violence online modules
  • linking with a local domestic violence service and the community to raise awareness and funds to prevent DFV
  • using one of Our Watch’s “#BecauseWhy’ short videos at assembly, or at a staff or parent meeting, to discuss how stereotypes limit opportunities for boys, girls, men and women
  • implementing the department’s respectful relationships education program
  • being aware of the department’s DFV policy and resources
  • acknowledging actions that demonstrate respect and equality.

For more ideas on positive ways to influence attitudes, build respect and prevent domestic and family violence, visit the department’s ending DFV page.

Community Knitting Day

After a huge success last year (over 830 squares knitted/crocheted on the day), the Centenary Knitting and Crochet Circle are holding this years’ Community Knitting Day on Saturday 23 June (see poster for times and location).

The aim is to complete as many squares as possible, with the goal this year set at 1000. Squares will be assembled into rugs for charity.

  • Drop in on the day:
    - Knit/crochet a square. Stay for an hour or stay for the day. Please bring your own 8 ply yarn and 4mm needles if you can – limited supplies provided on the day.
    - Always wanted to learn how to knit or crochet?? Someone will be there to help.
    - Complimentary tea, coffee, morning tea and lunch.
    - Find something special on the stall selling handmade items (not just knit and crochet).
    - Lots of raffles throughout the day
    - All funds raised on the day will be used to purchase yarn for rugs.
  • Or you may like to work some squares at home and drop them in on the day:
    - 8 ply yarn, 4mm needles, 40 stitches and knit to make a square. Garter stitch (all plain knitting) is fine, but be adventurous if you would like to.
  • If you are into crochet, we regularly have squares that need to be crocheted together, please get in touch.
