From the Executive Principal

Dear Parents and Friends

A very warm welcome to our new year 7 families and all families new to Corinda this year. A very smooth start to the year and I thank you all for ensuring our students are prepared with the correct uniforms and equipment.

This week we greeted approximately 300 new year 7 students and they all looked very bright eyed and ready for their new milestone in high school.

At the end of 2016 we had some late appointments to positions in the Department which resulted in some key staff members obtaining other positions or secondments.

  • Trent Cowley has taken a relieving position at the Queensland Pathways College for a semester.
  • Kylie Marchant has been seconded to a Regional Office Pathways Transition Officer position for a term.
  • Vanessa Garvie has taken up an Acting Deputy Principal position at Woodcrest College.
  • Alistair Pursor has been appointed to an Acting Head of Department position at Marsden State High School.

Replacing Mr Cowley and Ms Marchant in the administration are Jake Gallagher and Andrew Noble. The Year 12 Coordinator taking over from Mr Pursor is Faith Wild. Ms Horsfield will be taking up the Senior Schooling position from Mrs Garvie.

We also have a number of new staff joining us this year and we extend a very warm welcome to all our teaching and non-teaching staff.

Junior Secondary Initiative

This year we have introduced two additional classified positions to support our Junior Secondary model. In addition to our Year 7 Dean position which has now been renamed as Head of Year, we have introduced a Head of Year 8 and Head of Year 9. This positions will mirror that of the Dean to ensure we can provide appropriate support for our junior secondary students. The new Head of Year 8 is Ms Anneka Lloyd and the Head of Year 9 is Chip Barnes.

Seniors 2016

We were very pleased with our year 12 Senior data which was released in late December. Congratulations to the seniors of 2016 for making us very proud of your achievements. We had two OP 1 students: Kim Tang and Joseph Bui. Congratulations to Kim and Joseph on this outstanding achievement.

We will be acknowledging all our OP 1 – 5 students at our combined Investiture Ceremony and Scholars Assembly. These students deserved to be acknowledged by our student body for achieving this success.

Tuckshop Renovations Update

The refurbishment of our tuckshop is almost complete, but is running behind schedule. It was due to be completed prior to the start of the school year, however the contractors have had some delays and we hope to be fully operational by week 3.

The tuckshop is currently operating out of the Applied Studies kitchen demountable and this is quite congested at break times. To overcome this I would recommend to students to take advantage of the online ordering through Flexischools.

To place an online order students or parents can go to the Flexischools website (this is linked on our school website). A full menu is available and this will enable students to collect their lunch at the designated time without having to endure a long queue.

I look forward to seeing the refurbishment complete and I am sure the students will appreciate the new layout and self-serve facility.

Thank you for your patience with this.

Library News

My name is Mrs Trisha Buckley, and I will be teacher librarian for term one, while Mrs Lanham is on long service leave. I am very excited to meet Corinda students and help them with their learning, particularly in Years 7 and 8 with reading. The literacy programs here are designed to assist and encourage reading, which impacts directly on academic success. The library has an excellent collection of resources, and I look forward to meeting students, both in classes and in break times.

The first two weeks is a very busy time in the library while we distribute textbooks to all students. It is important that last year’s books have been returned and fees up to date, so students do not miss out on receiving theirs. If there are any issues, please talk to the helpful people in student services.

There are also students with outstanding resources from the general library collection, both ones not returned by the last day of 2016, or books that were lent out over the holidays. Check with your children to ensure they have returned everything. We are keen for them to be able to borrow materials for 2017, and having overdue items will hinder them. A lot of these came back on Tuesday, so thanks to those diligent families.

Our library catalogue is a web-based service, and can be accessed on student devices as well as the OPACs in the library. It is also available off campus as well, which is useful for access to our databases and eBooks. The URL is located below. It is recommended that students save this link to their bookmarks for easy access.

The library offers many services and resources to assist students with their learning. Please come in and visit and talk to the staff about how we can help.

Happy reading!

Science and Agriculture News

Welcome to Science 2017!

We are off to a flying start in science this year. The year 7 and 8 students are starting their science adventure in the field of Chemistry this term, while our year 9s and 10s are beginning the year in the Physics domain. Our year 11 and 12 students are focusing on a strong academic start to the year.

Semester overviews will be sent to parents and students within the coming fortnight via email.

The Agricultural Department will be embarking on a new Aquaponics Journey with Mrs Shields and Mr Halsey at the helm guiding the students through the critical component and science necessary to run a healthy and productive ecosystem.

Mr Butcher is in charge of our Certificate 2 in Rural Operations (year 11) and Certificate 2 in Agriculture (year 12) courses and is very excited about launching the new Wild Life Club. He’s got plenty of awesome ideas and practical activities planned that are both educational and engaging.

Please stay tuned for more information about Agricultural Section teams and the upcoming Ag Challenge Day and BBQ.

Please keep in contact with your student’s teacher this year so that we can all work together for the best outcomes possible for every student. The strongest support structures we can offer the students are ones where the student, school staff and parent/caregivers work together in a united approach towards student learning.

Let’s make 2017 our best year yet!

Football Excellence News

2017 promises to be another big year for our Football Excellence Program.

In regards to staffing, we welcome Mr Vaughan Hogan to our school. Vaughan is a current Metropolitan West Football Official and will take over both our Year 9 Football Excellence squad, as well as our Year 11/12 combined group. He is excited to be involved with our Football Program and looks forward to meeting his groups. Mr Nick Vlaisavljevic continues with our Year 10 Football squad, while Mr Ben Cameron will look after both our Year 7 and Year 8 groups.

Coaches are very excited about the playing group assembled for 2017. A number of new players have joined our Football Excellence Program from other schools, across all year levels this year –our already strong junior squads in particular, have been further strengthened since 2016.

Late 2016 also saw a formalised partnership with QLD Lions FC established, whereby we hope to increase the number of players representing both Lions FC and Corinda’s Football Program. On this note, players are continually reminded that they need to be looking to play at the highest possible club level outside of school too. The more players are training/playing, the greater their opportunities for development. It is evident (even in our junior squads) which players are benefitting from regular training at a high level.

All students in the program will be reminded this week about the strict effort and behaviour expectations which are required for continued enrolment in Football Excellence. Students will also be notified by their coach, which lessons will be designated for practical sessions and theoretical work. A reminder that students are not to be in their sports uniform on the day that they have a scheduled theory class – this was an ongoing issue in 2016.

Most squads will be looking at a combination of both Futsal and Football in Term 1, as we prepare for both the South East Queensland Futsal Titles (Week 6, Term 1) and West Brisbane District Gala Days, Bill Turner Cup/Trophy, and Veto Cup/Trophy (Term 2). Year 8, 11, and 12 students will also have the Football Excellence Life-Skills seminar with Michael Jeh at the end of Week 5 – more information about this will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks.

If you have any questions about Corinda’s Football Program in 2017, please contact the appropriate coach, or Head of Football, Mr Ben Cameron, without hesitation. A final trial for entry into the Year 7 Football Excellence Program will be held on Thursday, 2nd February, from 3.00pm – 4.30pm. Interested students should meet at the Sports Centre and await instruction.
