Deputy Principal Address

The past few weeks at Corinda SHS have been filled with energy, talent, and community spirit. Across classrooms, fields, and creative spaces, our students have shown what it means to be dedicated, courageous, and proud of their achievements.
Our annual Oeuvre Exhibition once again highlighted the remarkable creativity of our Year 12 Visual Art students. From intricate paintings to digital design, sculpture, and mixed media works, the exhibition celebrated the imagination and skill developed in our Arts programs. Families, friends, and staff who attended were struck not only by the technical ability on display, but also by the confidence and voice of our young artists. Oeuvre remains an important reminder that the Arts are a vital part of education, offering students the opportunity to tell their stories, explore identity, and connect with the wider community.

Corinda SHS recently recognised Pride Week and Wear it Purple Day, a celebration of respect, inclusion, and belonging. Activities across the week encouraged all students to consider the importance of valuing diversity and ensuring that every member of our school community feels safe and supported. From colourful displays to thoughtful classroom conversations, we reinforced our commitment to building a culture of kindness and understanding. We know that these values extend beyond school gates and into the world our students are shaping.

Our Year 12 Humanities students recently took part in the UQ Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Lecture Series, hosted here at Corinda SHS. The day consisted of a range of breakout sessions led by academics and PhD candidates. Students explored diverse topics including Ancient History, Economics, Geography, Legal Studies, Modern History, and Philosophy, gaining fresh insights to support their learning in senior studies. This experience was an invaluable opportunity for our Year 12s to broaden their perspectives, deepen their subject knowledge, and begin envisioning future pathways in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Sport has also been a stage for student achievement, with our teams reaching the Grand Finals in the UHL and ISSA Cup competitions. The U14 Boys and Senior Boys celebrated Grand Final wins on Thursday night, and we look forward to cheering on our Senior Girls in their Grand Final next week. This is a true reflection of their countless hours of training and a strong commitment to teamwork. These games showcased the very best of Corinda, with students demonstrating determination, fair play, and school pride. A highlight was hosting a match on our school grounds against Kings Christian College, giving our school community the chance to support our Senior Girls team. Whether cheering from the sidelines or giving their all on the field, our students represented Corinda SHS with distinction.

Together, these events remind us that education is about more than the classroom. It is about nurturing creativity, celebrating diversity, building resilience, and striving for excellence. At Corinda SHS, we are immensely proud of the way our students rise to each challenge, whether it be presenting their artwork, competing in sport, debating global issues, or celebrating community.
We thank the staff who guide and support our students in these programs, and the families who walk alongside them in their journeys. Most of all, we congratulate our young people for their achievements over the past few weeks as they continue to make Corinda a place of opportunity, learning, and pride.
Warm regards,
Jacqueline Craigie

Some of our best
Corinda’s rising tennis stars
Our talented 12 and under Metropolitan West School Sport representatives recently travelled to Cairns to compete in Tennis Australia’s annual teams' competition.
Alyosha N, Atharv N, Scarlett M and Amy G proudly represented Corinda SHS, contributing to a fantastic overall result with the team finishing 4th in Queensland. Their efforts on court were matched by their commitment to fair play, with Met West receiving the prestigious Fair Play Award for outstanding sportsmanship and team spirit.
This achievement reflects not only their skill and determination, but also the values our students carry with them wherever they go. We commend each student for their hard work and the way they represented Corinda SHS on the courts at a state level.

Sameeha makes history at the Asia Pacific Young Audience Award
Year 9 Media student Sameeha N is the first Corinda SHS student to participate in the Asia Pacific Young Audience Awards. She had the unique opportunity to judge films from around the world and take part in an exclusive Q&A with the filmmakers.
Sameeha reflected on the experience, saying she enjoyed meeting other film enthusiasts, watching three films, and selecting a favourite. She expressed her honour at being the first student from Corinda SHS to attend the event.
This remarkable achievement highlights Sameeha’s passion for media and storytelling, and it marks an inspiring step in her journey in Media studies at school.

Henryk launches carpentry career
We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Year 12 student Henryk D, who has officially signed a contract to begin an apprenticeship in carpentry. Henryk now joins the growing number of Corinda SHS graduates stepping directly into the workforce.
This milestone reflects not only Henryk’s ambition and dedication but also the guidance and support of our Industrial Technoloy and Design faculty, which continues to open doors to meaningful and successful career pathways. A special thank you goes to Tobby Mitchell from BUSY At Work for helping make this opportunity a reality, and to Scott from SPB Construction QLD, who inspired students by sharing the exciting opportunities and rewards available in the trades.

Celebrating a successful season of netball
Congratulations to our Open Girls Netball team on an incredible season, finishing as runners-up at the Metropolitan West School Sport Finals! The team triumphed in all their round games and put up a strong fight in a thrilling Grand Final against Glenala SHS. Umpires praised the team for their teamwork, respect, and energy on the court. A special congratulations to our Year 12 students, who ended their netball journey at Corinda. We are proud of your dedication and outstanding sportsmanship!

Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek MP meets our student volunteers
We would like to highlight fifteen of our Year 10 students that stepped up over the weekend to support Brisbane Central State School’s 150th anniversary celebrations. From helping with set-up to assisting on the day and during pack-up, the students contributed 15 hours of valuable volunteering toward their Certificate II in Active Volunteering.
Their efforts didn’t go unnoticed — the students even had the chance to meet and speak with Education Minister, John-Paul Langbroek MP. Well done to our students for proudly representing Corinda SHS and demonstrating the positive impact our students can have beyond the classroom.

SchoolTV: Healthy Study Habits
In today's world, where distractions are abundant and the pressure to excel is high, guiding children to develop healthy study habits is more important than ever. As students aspire to achieve academic success, the cornerstone of that achievement lies not just in their intelligence or drive, but in the study habits they cultivate.
It's essential for students to recognise that good study habits aren't merely about spending extra hours hitting the books. It's more about quality over quantity and having a more balanced approach. Emphasising the value of a routine is essential. Consistent study times establish a sense of structure and discipline, turning studying into a natural part of their daily routine rather than a burdensome task.
Additionally, how students approach their study sessions is equally important. Taking regular breaks is a crucial part of this process in maintaining focus and preventing burnout.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes sufficient sleep, a balanced diet, and consistent physical activity are indispensable elements that will significantly impact your child's ability to study effectively. Fostering these healthy habits is one of the most valuable gifts we can offer children, paving the way for a lifetime of learning and achievement.

Looking after your student's wellbeing
As we move through the change of season, we’re still seeing influenza lingering in the community. We kindly remind families that if your student is feeling unwell, please seek medical advice and allow them the time to rest and recover at home.
Please see the Queensland Health infographic below for more information on staying healthy.
